With our status as a Championship club now confirmed, i’d like to see Cook give some minutes to some of the stand out performers from the U18/Dev Squad.
Is there really any point in playing Clarke, Powell, James, Robinson, etc for 90 minutes in the next two games? Players who we know won’t be here next year.
The U18/Dev league is all but over and some of those lads deserve to know the club are serious about promoting our own. If we can’t do it now, when can we?

As garwood has already mentioned elsewhere, perhaps yes against Birmingham, but if millwall are fighting to avoid the drop come the time we play them, it’s very disrespectful to both millwall & rotherham.
23 April 2019 at 5:53 pm #178399I was about to say the same thing, imagine if we needed Rotherham to lose their last game and their opponents fielded a weakened team.
Its just not on, there will be opportunities during preseason to see how the young uns are progressing.
Let’s go out in a blaze of glory with 2 more wins and a decent points tally.
Brum and the Oatcakes are still catchable. From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!23 April 2019 at 6:07 pm #178400I’m suggesting we give 2/3 stand out performers 15/20mins here and there. That can hardly be classed as weakening the team.
The game against Birmingham is a dead rubber and I suspect the Millwall game will be.
24 April 2019 at 12:45 am #178417I’d be very surprised if we didn’t see a couple on the bench on Saturday, weather they get on though would depend on how the games going. Birmingham might want to blood some of their own too.
24 April 2019 at 6:44 am #178419Trouble is most of our best youngsters are 15-17. So I wonder how many are upto the Championship physically.
Would be ideal for someone like Lang. But of course he’s better off getting experience, playing each week, for Oldham.
24 April 2019 at 8:40 am #178420And I’m sure Rotherham and Millwall would worry about us if the shoe was on the other foot. We could blood 1 maybe 2 so as not to breach the integrity of it. And some of the kids have earned a shot.

Gelhardt 16 (17 next month), Jolley (17), Weir (17), Maffeo (18) are just 4 names that keep cropping up regualrly. 2 of them starters in the England youth set-out. Age isn’t an issue. Most decent players break into the starting line up in their teens. Look at Reece James. Correct me if im wrong, but he’s yet to make an appearence for his parent club.
Cook was asked about the giving some of the youngsters a chance at the last fans forum at the turn of the year. He confirmed we have some real talent (mentioned Gelhardt by name) but the time wasn’t right. He couldn’t throw them into a dog fight.
Well the dog fight is over. Time to see how good some of these lads are (or can be).
24 April 2019 at 4:52 pm #178423Just found the notes posted on here shortly after the Fans Forum…
“6. Joe Gelhardt mentioned. Cook described him as an exceptional talent. Aswell as some others. Can’t give them opportunities with survival still on the line”
24 April 2019 at 4:58 pm #178424A quote from Darren Royle in November
“I think for Wigan Athletic the academy creates a huge opportunity; the north-west is a powerhouse of football and we can provide a niche in our area in terms of creating a pathway, which is something Gregor Rioch and Paul Cook are trying to further develop.”
29 April 2019 at 4:36 pm #178528Good to see Cook throw the young lads in. Hopefully they’ll get more minutes on Sunday. If not a start.
For those of us that didn’t go to Birmingham, what position did Gelhardt and Weir take up?
29 April 2019 at 9:23 pm #178529Hope we have a decent amount of pre-season games this time to at least have a look at some of them playing with senior pro’s.
29 April 2019 at 11:21 pm #178531Haha its that time of year again, but I agree we should play more friendlies.
1 May 2019 at 12:28 am #178541Champions AGAIN!
Get em all on on Sunday
1 May 2019 at 3:02 am #178542Yep,
I would agree.
Time to give that Charlie Jolley a run out – he’s been banging them in as regularly (if not more so) than Geldhart!!!
