Last night, I was absolutely disgusted by the reaction of our so-called ‘supporters’. No more so, than when a large majority booed the team off at half-time. Frankly, that was appalling. Why boo? So we were losing. So we weren’t playing very well. Christ, we were still playing a damn sight better than on many occasions in the past few seasons.
In all honesty, what happened last night, has had me questioning whether or not I’ve done the right thing renewing my season ticket. I’m talking about the idiotic, fickle, arseholes I have to sit amongst, who claim to be Wigan Athletic supporters, NOT last nights performance. Deary, deary, me. I heard some absolute ‘pearlers’ last night, from people sat near me. Here’s some of them:
“I could of gone away in’t bloody caravan, rather than watch this shit”
-I very nearly turned around and said “make sure you f*** off to it before Saturday, won’t you?”
Another one was “Bloody hell! We’ve gone from top o’t league, to bein reet down’t league, toneet”.
-I felt like saying “Don’t be a p***, we’ve played one bloody game!” FFS!
(BY THE WAY, THESE WERE FROM 50 YEAR OLD BLOKES!)
That’s just a couple. The most annoying thing is…….how impatient are Wiganers? Jesus tonight! The majority are still calling for the player to play the long ball, rather than bearing with a patient, deliberate, build up. One that looked so good in pre-season. But now here we are, and all the moaning b***ards are off already. It didn’t take them long.
For a while, I’ve read the comments on Mudhutsmedia, about our JCL fans, and how many ‘Whoppers’ we now have. And to be fair, I thought they were going over the top. But not now. They have it spot on. I am p***ed off already at the people who are sitting near me. If they carry on like that, I’m going to have top say something. It is RIGHT. We have so many ‘Whoppers’ in our support, it is untrue. Are we, the genuine fans, the ones who were here before all the success, the VICTIMS of our clubs success? I think so. Yes, everybody has a right to an opinion. But for christ’s sake, have a bit of patience.
Regarding last night, I don’t actually thing we played that badly. Yes, we weren’t as good as we can be, but let’s give Wolves a bit of credit. It’s not the first time a Mick McCarthy team has come and ‘done’ us, by playing a ‘high-tempo’ game, nicking a goal, and then closing shop. His Sunderland team did it to us in our promotion season, when Marcus Stewart netted early on, if you recall. (Perhaps a lot of the booers don’t remember, as they were still ‘Yoonited’ fans, in the pub, back then?)
Wolves earned their victory. We tried to comeback, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. My only criticism of our team and performance is that I thought our midfield was too ‘rigid’. I mean, I think we needed to have a midfielder picking up the ball off the centre-halves. We didn’t do that, and were relying on Scharner and Bramble to get things moving. And neither of them are Emlyn Hughes or Franz Beckenbauer, are they? And I thought we didn’t get the ball to N’Zogbia enough. Apart from that, we weren’t that bad. Wolves closed us down very well, and were worthy of their victory. The lad Keogh, looked very good. But to hear it, and especially this morning, we are now the worlds worst. This coming the day after I saw somebody on a forum ridiculously saying “We can make the Champions League”. Honestly. One of Paul Jewell’s favourite sayings was that the fans “Need a reality check”. He’d definitely be correct in this instance. I’ve never known anything as ridiculous, and frankly as piss-poor as the fans reaction to last night. Seriously, people need to calm down. In all honesty, is it any wonder that we go away and win at Villa, then lose at home to Wolves, when we have such a bunch of fickle, moaning, b***ards, at home games? In the words of another ex-Latics manager, Kenny Swain, dare I say “If you don’t f**ckin like it, don’t come again!”.
Seriously, so what? We lost a game. And people throw their toys out of the pram. What will happen when we lose a few more? And we will. I am stunned at how soon people have ‘cracked’. I know a fair few people on Mudhutsmedia, and elsewhere, long for the day when we are back playing in the lower leagues, because our support will be back to the ‘loyal’ ones, who have been going years, and all the JCL’s will have disappeared. I’d kind of got beyond that way of thinking, and was full of optimism that we could simply enjoy our time in the top flight. But after last night, I agree with them. The sooner the gobshites who have been fans for all of 3 or 4 seasons f**k off, and take their booing with them, the better. Because lets be honest, anybody who booed that last night, obviously must not remember the days of Kenny Swain or Bruce Rioch. And if you are reading this thinking “Well, I booed, and I remember the Swain and Rioch days”, then shame on you. SHAME on you.
We’ve never had it better as Latics fans, Roberto back as boss, looking to play good football, some cracking players, such as Rodallega and Gomez, a passionate and historically linked coaching staff, etc, etc. But to your average JCL, does all this matter? They’ve joined us on the back of our success. The old “I support a winning team” glory-hunter mentality.
Well if it’s winning things, and glory you are after, I suggest you f**k off to Old Trafford or Anfield, pronto. Or rather, back to your couch/pub, in front of the TV, from whence you came.
You’ll not be missed.
A rant? No, it wasn’t a rant. I was being deadly serious. Our so-called support really pissed me off, last night. Fickle, fickle, b****rds.
19 August 2009 at 2:07 pm #5569I agreed with every word.
19 August 2009 at 2:10 pm #5572Me too, Vatman, great post, spot on.

I agree and disagree.
I am a newish season ticket holder because of raising a family couldn;t say to my hubby oh you mind the kids while I go footy. I know many men do this but hey ‘I know my place’…lol. BUt I did used to go to Springy and catch the last 10 mins when it was free as a kid as we couldn;t afford to pay to watch them. So yeah I am a newbie but always followed the success of Latics. But let me make this clear I too am disgusted that many fans booed, in fact they are not fans just people with nowt better to do IMHO. I went mad at my husband for not singing last night saying when your 60 you can keep quiet, the lads need us now.
Read my post on fans on the Roberto thread.

I think some people don’t understand the term FAN. FAN = Fanatic. I’ll give you an example, if you are a Beatles fan (I am not just an example here) and they sing a duff note in concert do you boo them off….Noooooo. A fan sticks through/by whoever or whatever they are fanatical about. I think the ones who boo the team are just supporters.
You have to realise how that kind of/lack of support affect morale and the teams heads. If they have a night were things aren’t going right the last thing they need is boo’s. IT DOES NOT matter how much they get paid yadda yadda yadda as that is the commercial price of football today. A bit like the way property prices went mad (it’s the market not the players fault) anyways supporters have RUINED footballers careers as some of them are not mentally strong enough to block it out, no matter how good they are at kicking a ball.Anyway I’ll get off me soap box now.
…………………………………………….SO please don’t tarr all newish season ticket holders with the same brush. I also have sworn if they go down, I will still watch them every home match come hell or high water.
19 August 2009 at 2:17 pm #5577Absolutely spot on! And that saves me typing a lot of that. Need to get a midfielder to fetch the ball from our centre halves and start play with him instead of Titus or the Austrian superstar (in his own mind) launching it or playing danger ball with each other.

Fair enough, Wigginer.
19 August 2009 at 3:05 pm #5587Spot on vat69, I had to railroad a few idiots sat near me, i was embarrassed being so close to the boing and moved seats for the second half. Its like you said we weren’t that bad except for the first 20 minutes when we were awfull and i thought wolves were going to have us dead and burried by half time. when we took controll of the game, which we did, they had every man behind the ball and any team would have struggled to score, i think we will POSSIBLEY have more chance of beating united on saturday than we did have of beating wolves on that performance and you will find many teams will struggle against them this season.
Hendry Thomas looks like he is going to be class, he is a machine,
Gomez looks class , completely different to anyone i have ever seen in a latics shrt. However i do think we lacked a plan B, after the first 20 mins i thought, reet, we getting back into this now lets nick a goal before half time and were laughing, but the longer the game went on I was thinking, its not gonna happen tonight, they could have given us 4 hours stoppage time instead of 4 mins and i still dont think we would have scored, not through lack of trying though and thats all any propper latics fan has asked for off there team.
Fair play to wolves they had there gameplan stuck to it worked there b….x off and played some great football themselves at times. Well done and good luck for the season. As for people Booing FFS lads youre an embaressment and do the real fans a favour and fuck off to youre local pub and watch united or whoever may be top of the league at the time.19 August 2009 at 3:17 pm #5591i agree with every word mate, its a disgrace, had a young lad at the back me slagging our boys off need to say he got a tongue lashing..i was fustrated last night but come shit happens lets pick ourselves regroup and go again..long live bobby king of wigan ha ha
19 August 2009 at 3:28 pm #5592The players performed badly, but not as bad as the supporters. All the game we got one quick burst of Roberto Martinez from about a dozen in the East stand, the rest of the match nothing. Not a come on Wigan, not a we love you Wigan, absolutely nothing. The Wolves fans were trying to get us into life, but it didn’t work, our support certainly last night was as they said, s++t!
19 August 2009 at 3:36 pm #5595Spot on Vat, we do get some reet idiots following us. I question wheter some of them have ever watched a game before. Fact of the matter is thought, that to survive and sustain as a premiership club we need to increase the the fan base. In the interests of the club, its more about quantity than quality.
Would be interesting to know what proportion of our support actually saw bobby and jones play for the club though
19 August 2009 at 3:55 pm #5602Overheard in the West Stand last night, and said in all seriousness:
‘Who is this bloody Martinez bloke anyway?’Not sure who said it, but it resulted in numerous heads turning, then shaking in disbelief.
I josh you not.
19 August 2009 at 3:59 pm #5605Great initial post Vat, I agree with you and all that has been said since.
However, it was very frustrating, and to a certain extent I can understand peoples negative reaction.(not the booing though)
We started very well at Villa, and I think most people expected us to go out there and pick up an easy three points.
If I am honest I thought we were nailed on for the win after seeing Wolves play at the weekend.
Even now, I don’t know how we lost to a side who were so lacking in football ability, but I suppose it just shows you how hard work and determination can still pull you through at times.(along with every spoil tactic in the book).
I don’t see any need to panic just yet, but we had better learn quickly how to play against the s**t sides because Stoke, Portsmouth, Burnley, Fulham, Birmingham, Bolton etc will play just like Wolves did.
I think it will be a different game altogether on Saturday, I’m not predicting a victory, but an improved performance will be nice.19 August 2009 at 4:01 pm #5606Spot on Vatman…..our support was fooking pish poor last neet.
1st home game of the season.
1st chance to welcome RM back.
A warm pleasant mid August night, with a whole new season to look forward to and we couldn’t muster up 15,000 home fans, and those that do turn up don’t get behind the team.I know the home fans haven’t had much to shout about since January this year but we had the chance as a set of fans to put all that behind us last night…..

Dare I suggest that that person was probably wearing a gravy stained ‘Ellgren’ rugby top, when Martinez was last here?
In a way, I wish we’d go back to the hardcore 8-10,000 we had before we got promoted. Honestly, I do. Of course, that wouldn’t do financially, but we’d have a better quality of support.
Funny how it jumped up to around 19,000 at that Reading match, wasn’t it? Glory-hunting bast………..

Do you think Bobby will have a go at the fans ala Whelan, Jewell and Bruce. -
