I dont get our defense, sometimes we look quite good the back like we did for a few games after chelsea away, and then other times we look absolutly dreadful. :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:
I can in part see where you’re coming from Standish. Bobby’s “way of playing the game” is not the style of football I like – in fact I detest it. I find it dull, boring & more like watching a game of chess than a game of football. Many people rave on about Spain being the best international side to watch in the world. I saw all their games in the world cup & was bored rigid.
But its a world of opinions & I aint stupid enough or naive enough to think that everybody should think the same thing.However, & this is probably more where I have the problem than it was in actually knowing what he is trying to achieve – he isn’t very good at putting his ideas into actions. I could be offered the manager’s job & promise to get the team playing the most beautiful football ever seen but if after nearly 2 seasons that team was still producing boring, mistake riddled, low scoring drivel then I would not be delivering on my promise & I’d expect to be given the boot.
There’s a world of difference between saying what you want to achieve & actually being able to deliver it – & I’ve seen no evidence yet that Bobby is capable of doing that no matter how much time you give him.
I also appreciate your point you made to someone else that he “may” have been given other tasks as well as avoiding relegation such as slashing wage bills but if he is having to be more prudent with the cash than previous managers under Whelan then I’m sorry but he’s not even doing that job very well either. He may well have got the wage bill right down & be concentrating on bringing young players through but if this is his brief then you would expect him to be ultra-cautious with what little money he does get especially when he’s been able to keep hold of his “big money stars” unlike previous managers – but he’s wasted large chunks of it on dross like Di Santo, Scotland, Boselli & is now having to play a bloke up front on his own who Bobby himself admitted last season doesn’t have the attributes to play there. It should also be pointed out that he doesn’t have the attributes to play on the left wing where Bobby tried to get him to play for a season & a bit but that one has been quietly droppedTo put it another way he simply isn’t up to the job & I don’t see what “giving him more time” (as some say) will achieve. Somebody on this thread (may have been you) has said that Whelan has said he will never sack martinez so we should just get on with it & get behind him. Why?
For starters Whelan is renowned for stating things & then contradicting himself with his actions (foreign manager anyone??) so I take everything he says with a skip full of salt & secondly if someone who is manager of the club you support is clearly not up to the job it should be the fans (as supporters & customers) to demand change (IMO)Some decents made Tyldesley. We’ll probably never agree on the subject matter of Martinez or his style of play (or at least what that style of play should be), but there’s a lot of what you’ve written that can’t argue with.

Can’t remember who came 20th or 19th but I had Latics coming 18th & joint on (35) points with Blackpool but going down on goal difference
However I didn’t try & predict actual scores & just gave a winning team the match at 1-0 & there wasn’t a whole lot in it goal difference wise between us & them
I was pretty pessimistic on Latics results so its actually given me a glimmer of hope that staying up is still possible providing we can win games more than 1-0, avoid getting hammered & Blackpool take a few kickingsIt is really hard to predict, You don’t know who will get the next bad run or the next good run, You also can’t put latics to beat Chelsea or other freak results e.t.c which a few teams will inevitably get.
I think at the end of the day the low scoring thing goes hand in hand with the system he plays. Playing someone like Rodellega up front on his own is never going to work as a goal scoring threat. He has persevered with this system to the point where we are now more than a win away from safety and I feel we could actually go down despite my brief optimism re this thread !! Should we go down, we will lose a good few players and some of the ones we will more than likely hang on to aint up to the battling style of Championship football, so don’t think for one minute going down will be a walk in the park ! If we aint meant to be in the Prem then whats the fcukin point / What are we meant to be playing for ? Does the club exist just so we can go and watch a footy game every couple of weeks regardless of the outcome ? No ! We want to better ourselves and we want success, and to a degree we have achieved success. It’s just a shame that DW didn’t back up his big talk of European football and take us to the next level ! It would appear deep down that many feel that our level is the Championship so why not drop to League One quickly and then we will have something to play for !! Personally I would rather stay where we are, getting up people’s noses and causing the odd upset along the way. Big names, half decent football ( sometimes ! ) and a good old relegation scrap most seasons ! Better than that Championship dross any day !
