Staying Up, dont like saying I told you so but, not mathematically yet I know but can anyone seriously see Hull getting 9 points from their remaining 3 games, no me neither ,now the doubters get off the slagging Martinez crusade, because this man now has on his CV, exactly the same as Jewell and Bruce have, hes kept us in the Premier League, against all odds, after a club losing its best players, the manager and all its backroom staff, one of the key players Cattermole the week before the season started, I think hes worked wonders, yes Ive been as frustrated, as the next man, at some of the football that weve seen, and especially so, some of our results, but after all the bad days at the office, this year, sundays result made up for it ten fold,now I cant wait for the season to end, so he can get shut of the dead wood he got left with from the Bruce era, ie Kapo De Ridder, Koumas Bouazzon Kingson. King already gone Thank god. I realise Bruce didnt sign all these players,and some are out on loan , and perhaps a few more will go as well, but hopefully Whelan will give him sufficient funds from the sale of these players, to sign the players he wants to take us to the next stage, hopefully not another relegation battle, had enough of these but then again were only Wigan Ath, thought the fans on sunday, were absolutely fantastic its surprising what a difference it makes, when they get right behind the team, the last 10 min was awesome, so to all the doubters and the Negative dross and drivel posters WE Are Staying Up, remember he who laughs last , laughs longest, and all the true Latics fans are at this moment tittering away Come On You Blues.
I actually said that we would more than likely stop up due to dross below us but more than likely go down next season because the players that go will not be replaced like for like !! December, January and February were particularly bad months for us at home losing 4 and drawing 3 with the away form not much better ! I can only put that down to our foreign contingent who come from warmer climes,not enjoying the cold snap ? Whatever the reason was, it got us in the deep stuff yet we got 4 points more than expected out of our last 4 home games ( 10 instead of the expected 6 ) and the dross below us look doomed so there you go. One swallow and all that !!
could not agree more. the aim of this season from the beginning WAS to stay up & it looks as if that has now been achieved. martinez has been learning all season & has had to learn fast – but i think he’s done it. i don’t want to count chickens, but i am looking forward to next season when all the bruce dead wood signings have gone & bobby can bring in the players he wants. he has brought some good signings this season,most notably diame, gohouri,moses to name but a few. jury still out on gomes,scotland, & goalkeeper (whose name i cant spell) i agree, but methinks these will only be backup/carling cup players anyway.

I make no secret of the fact that I only started watching in the Championship, but let me tell you Son. If it wasn’t for fans like me who have only missed 2 home games in the last 6 years and have joined in with the success, the crowds at home would be dire ! I am talking 10,000. Where do you think the other 5000 or so have come from ? There is a difference between negativity and being realistic ! All that c r a p about Goole away and Leyland Red Rose at home means nothing to me because I live in the NOW ! I dont need to explain myself to you ! I make no secret of the fact that I only started watching in the Championship, but let me tell you Son. I don’t see your point with that statement. If Atherton Colls, Atherton LR & Leigh Genesis were promoted to the top flight with their current squads etc.. then Latics & no doubt everybody else would stay up coz a) There were 3 teams really poor teams in the division & b) coz those 3 teams got fewer points than everybody else
As such filmoss’s statement is no less true than yours (IMO)
From my own personal point of view I think this season has been terrible. Yes we achieved Dave Whelan’s only goal of staying up but we’ve had to endure some horrendous football, horrendous performances, horrendous tactics, horrendous subsititution decisions. In between all that we’ve had 3 great performances against Villa, Chelsea & Liverpool & 10 awesome minutes against Arsenal.
You may well think that 10 minutes of great football on Sunday makes up for 2870 minutes of crap but I don’t and, personally, I don’t think that anyone shouldI also note that you mention the deadwood brought in by Bruce & other managers but neglect to mention the deadwood Martinez himself has brought in & now needs to get rid of
As someone who’s followed us home & away for 23 years (admittedly far less now than I used to) no-one is more pleased than me that we look to be heading for a 6th straight season in the top flight but Martinez has a hell of alot to prove next season to show that he’s learned from his many, many mistakes and I for one have seen very little this season that suggests to me that a) he will learn & b) that he is the right long term manager for this club

Latics are in the Premier League on merit
If three teams finish below us, they will get relegated on merit
The same way as they came into the Premier League on merit
And will be replaced by three teams who come up on meritThere’s a key word in there somewhere ;)

And it’s coming from someone who has spent all season moaning and whining and is now unwilling to accept that Roberto has performed equally as well as Jewell, Hutchings & Bruce, even managed to achieve more in many respects by turning over some top teams and you can’t bear to actually give him a bit of credit for what he has achieved. :roll:
Maybe in the world cup this year they will kick everyone out and just have Brazil playing the Shetland Islands in the final just so you can say ‘yeah that brazil have got lucky and it’s only cos the opposition is shit’
All this season Latics fans have done nowt but bicker, whine and fall out. I personally dont think Bobby is up to it and staying up vindicates Dave Whelans choice but it could easily end in disaster yet. Please dont count chickens. If we stay up then D W really has to get this close season right and help the guy out, lets face it telling the whole world Cattermole is going nowhere all summer then selling him 4 days before seasons opener hardly helped Bobby did it?. Get shut as soon as last ball is kicked whoever is planning to leave and let him bring in players sooner rather than later. He has backed Bobby with his mouth now back him with the necessary funds. We dont want to do a Pompey or Hull but surely some cash should be available after the fire sale. Im waiting to be proved wrong about Bobby and hope i am so we shall see what happens during close season but i cant help feeling it will be same old same old
For gawds sake I’m not “proposing” to promote any team from Leigh or Atherton into the top flight I was using an extreme to show minerva (who said we hadn’t stayed up because there were worse teams than us but because we’d got enough points to stay up) that both his & filmoss’s statements were true i.e. we have stayed up because a) we have enough points & b) because there are teams in this division worse than us.

I am more than willing to accept that Roberto Martinez has done a better job that Chris Hutchings, but if you think he has “performed equally as well” as Paul Jewell & Steve Bruce or “even managed to achieve more” because we’ve beaten Arsenal, Liverpool & Chelsea then you’re living in cloud cuckoo land.
You’re talking about one fella who took over a team on its @r$e in div 3 & took it to the premier league within 4 seasons. Got that team to finish 10th, get to a major cup final & keep it up a second season (albeit by the skin of his teeth)
You’re also talking about another bloke who took over a team going nowhere but down to the Championship & who’d turned it around within a matter of games with the same squad as his predecessor, added some of his own signings in january & then had us performing like a top 8 side for the rest of that season. Who then had his team challenging for Europe the season after until his chairman sold the heart of his team out from underneath him before finishing 14thYou seriously think that Bobby has done better than them because in 3 games against teams in the top 5 he has got his team to win??? :roll:
Ignore the 9-1 defeat to Spurs, the biggest aggregate defeat in premier league history, 2 5-0 thumpings by Man U, a 4-0 thumping by the team who’ve scored the least number of goals in the division, a 4-0 thumping by Bolton Wanderers, embarrassing cup hammerings to Blackpool & Notts County and turning one of the best defences outside the top 4 to the worse in the division within 3 months of the season starting. I could also add any number of dreadful performances throughout the season to that listSo no, I won’t accept that Bobby has done equally as well as Jewell & Bruce because he hasn’t. 3 good results out of 35 games played won’t alter that
As I said yes he has kept us up & I think in Whelan’s eyes that is all that matters. So congrats to him for that but as I said before do i think he’ll learn from the many mistakes he’s made this season & do i think he’s the right long term manager for this club??
Judging him over the course of the season as opposed to 3 or 4 games. NO – not in a million yearsAnd when i say that, nowt would give me greater pleasure than to come on here this time next year & have my face well & truly rubbed in it after a great season under Bobby – I just think there’s next to no chance that will happen
