I’ve seen a few posts on this board over the course of the season saying that we’ll only stay up as there are three teams worse than us.

That is a nonsense of a statement, as it’s all relative, and has been since we got into the Premier League. Of course there are three teams worse than us, there has been for the past five seasons. The 40 point total to secure safety is a fallacy: the last time a team needed 40 points to avoid relegation was Bolton in 2003.

Since we got into the Premier League…..

    2006
    1st Chelsea – 90
    17th Portsmouth – 38
    18th Birmingham – 34

    2007
    1st Man U – 89
    17th Wigan – 38
    18th Sheff U – 34

    2008
    1st Man U – 87
    17th Fulham – 36
    18th Reading – 36

    2009
    1st Man U – 90
    17th Hull – 35
    18th Newcastle – 34

    2010 at present
    1st Chelsea 77 (potentially 86)
    15th Wigan – 35 (potentially 44)
    16th Wolves – 34 (potentially 43)
    17th West Ham – 31 (potentially 40)
    18th Hull – 28 (potentially 37)

Since May 2006, the bottom team in the league has finished with 15, 28, 11, & 32 points. Add Pompey’s 9 points back on, and they are on 26 points at present.

In essence, teams are generally winning, drawing and losing just as many games as they have done in previous years, and as usual there are three teams who are worse than the other teams and who will be relegated at the end of the season.

It’s been an inconsistent, and often disappointing season. We’ve lost games we should have won, and won games we should have lost, but if we stay up, it has been done on merit and not by default.

Portsmouth 4 days earlier was was one of the worst and guttless formations i have seen us play in the premiership. As for the jurys out on Scotland and Gomes, there are out there depth and that is putting it kindly. This has been the worst season in the premiership based on value for money in my opinion, i can count on one hand the games i have enjoyed. I hope Martinez turns it round but my biggest gripe is that he has no plan B formation wise, backroom staff dont seem strong enough and i think we need a defencive coach. Up the Latics and good luck to Bob, i thought that we would have gone down this season. Well done.

Just to reiterate….By saying the dross below us, I meant in my opinion the bottom 3 as of now will go down and I have said that all along. A half empty stadium on a Wed night against an already doomed side witnessed one of the worst Latics performances I have ever seen yet a bumper crowd of 22,000+ on the Sun witnessed the Latics conjure up an Houdini style escape against one of the best sides in Europe ! Shop window syndrome me thinks !!

On saying that miner is also appropriate because you really are the pits !! ;) Oh and by the way there is no Leyland Motors anymore ! Oh and another thing your Mum said “stop leaving all your pots up in your bedroom” !!And ” Wheres all the toilet roll gone ? ” !!

My post wasn’t aimed at you in particular Fil, as there have been numerous people on this forum, as there have been matches all season, saying that we’ll stay up only because there are three terrible teams in the league, and not because we have done enough to stay up.

I’m not saying it’s been a good season. I agree that the Portsmouth game was painful to watch, which was then followed by the euphoria of the last ten minutes against Arsenal. There have been some shockingly bad results, like the Spurs game, and defeat at Pompey, but the fact of the matter is the bottom three teams have won, drawn and lost a similar amount of games as teams in the bottom three have done for the past few seasons. The points difference between 1st and 17th is the same as it always is, and if we win one more game, we’ve won the same number as we did in 2006-2007 and in 2007-2008.

If the three teams at the bottom finished with just a couple of wins each, then yes, there would be an argument to say we’d survived by default.

I’m one of them but I never meant that we would only stay up because there were (at least) three worse teams. Perhaps I should have couched it more positiviely by saying that we would definitely not go down because there were (at least) three worse teams. There’s a subtle difference, I think.

In a way, I ‘ve quite enjoyed it. I’ve enjoyed watching the team and the manager struggle to adapt to a new way of playing, a style that, for me, is infinitely more enjoyable to watching than the stuff served up under Bruce. I don’t really care that we have lost a lot of games because we are Wigan and I think that anyone expecting us to be a regular top 10 side is in dreamland. Therefore, we will lose a lot of games, but I would rather lose trying to play football than simply spoiling a game and hoofing and hoping for the best. That’s just the way I like to see football played. I know we haven’t been very good at it but don’t bother replying to tell me I’m wrong. I can’t be wrong – it’s my opinion.

Although I like the concept of our Plan A, I’ve been as frustrated as anyone that we seem to have have no plan B. Perhaps Martinez will find one at some coaching clinic over the summer. Given that Whelan is bent on reducing the debts to a third of their current level (quite rightly in my view, see above paragraph about us “being Wigan”), then the chances of bringing on big name players is slim. So, we could well be in for more of the same next season but, if we tighten up those big defensive failings that have blighted us all this season and find someone who can score one or two, then a comfortable 12th or 13th place is not beyond easy reach.

As I seem to say every year, ironically, our level of success/failure next season will probably be determined by what happens in the close season.

Let’s hope for 3 points tomorrow and a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing match with Hull next weekend.

Staying Up, dont like saying I told you so but, not mathematically yet I know but can anyone seriously see Hull getting 9 points from their remaining 3 games, no me neither ,.

Hull only need 2 wins and a draw to match us on points…and if they win or we lose by more than two goals in any of the last 3 games we could still go down.

From listening to the commentaries of their last 2 games, I can’t see them getting anything at all. By all accounts, they’ve gone out to play for 2 draws and been absolutely dreadful. Before last weekend I thought they might nick something v Villa and beat Sunderland, but that result the other night might just finish them off, think if Sunderland score first tomorrow, they might win it by 3 or 4.
