Unlucky not to nick a point there-sloppy goals given away but lets not take away the fact that t that that was a very very good West Brom side we faced today. Loads to be positive about!

Yip. They were better than I thought.Long up front played well for them. But we played decent enough and two teams at it.Thought Caldwell struggled maybe carrying a knock……The liner on our side was rather poor with some of his decision making the rotter.

Excellent start, first 10-15. WBA didn’t touch the ball.

Only WBA threat from set-pieces, then we go and switched off for the 2 goals. Brunt (in 2nd /3rd phase) given far too much time to get in the cross for the first; second, no comment.

Thought Watson was excellent today, far and away our best player … first real misplaced pass of any consequence…84th min. Even got the set pieces right today. Stood and applauded him off goodpost

Di Santo didn’t look to be at the races today, not quite so hungry and sharp…bit of a disappointment (thoughts on Argentina /Saudi ?)

For the possession we had 2nd half, thought we huffed and puffed, that we created little in the way of clear-cut chances (3, tops).

WBA to their credit played well in the 2nd, defended their lead well and played some decent possession football (Latics style).

Case of what might have been … great start(following on WHU, Spurs), but concede sloppy goals and you get your just deserts !

Disappointing. Any 3 (min. draw) would have given us additional momentum going to Anfield next week.

i agree with east altough we sit in the south pity eastander has to use such a rude description of the lineman

Cedit where its due, he did ok today. Watson had two pretty good efforts on goal as well.
Plenty of good footy played today but lacked killer instinct up front. didnt really test their keeper.

Surprised nobody has mentioned how poor and out of shape Jean Beausejour looked ! Why he wasn’t substituted is a mystery to me ! As for Watson, a game of two halves in my opinion for him. His misplaced passes in the second half far outnumbered his completed passes from the first half. Stam was brilliant when he came on and must surely start next week.I would move everyone in the back line along one to accomodate him and drop the ineffective Beausejour.

if rm had taken beausejour oof like you suggest we would have lost 20 because he made our goal mate

                Phil,

For once, I will disagree with you.

In relative terms, Watson was bloody good – moved the ball well, and some incisive passes, even a couple of attempts on goal.

Not saying JB is an athlete but he is one of the best in the team to pick out the pass (cross)… he did again today. Put who you like in his place (Jones, Figs, etc.), no one will have the quality to deliver as he does. Perhaps he should a bit more for the team…that’s another issue.

Has to start for me (fits our style of play).

Stam – played well when he came on.

Boyce – as previously remarked looking a little sluggish.

Ramis – one or two suicidal short balls to team mates today; looked lost lost when Caldwell came off (one on one with Lukaku, if I remember well)

I’m glad that someone has pointed out that Ben Watson was outstanding today but Roberto was right to take him off because he looked a bit knackered which showed towards the end with a couple of lazy passes

I was a fan of his from January until the end of last season and I thought it was his signing that allowed us to use the 3-4-3 system so well. However…..I’m not sure where he went for his holidays but as my Dad pointed out, it was definitely an all inclusive. The guy is twice the player he was and unfortunately I don’t mean skill wise.

I presume that Martinez selects him ahead of Miyachi or Crusat because of his defence but I would either move Figs forward (especially when Alcaraz is back) or put Stam on the left where he played many times over in Holland I believe.
