The penalty decision today was a stinker, but let,s be honest even in the premiership days, decisions like that were regular occurrences, these days the players are so low in confidence that it takes them such a long while to recover. We were promoted top of the 1st division and thought the squad was better than what it was, central defence has been in constant flux all season, we had a great centre back partnership last season Morgan and pierce gelled very well, the real reason pierce went was after a row with Caldwell not the London excuse, similarly morsey was put out on loan for the same reason, the squad has been weakened by losing both players, today after a great second half performance our late defending was abysmal and I still couldn’t believe that we lost the game.
Plus points for me. Not all doom and gloom.
Yannick scored two goals, but for me easily the man of the match was a player whom I only appreciated late in his first spell was jordi gomez who always wants the ball, doesn’t give it away, or get caught in possession unlike perkins or power, today he also made a few good tackles and some excellent defence breaking passes. If we are to stay up he needs to start every game, also nathan Byrne was outstanding when he came on, his pace and quick feet caused ipswich major problems, for me he should be starting every game. Finally I am astonished as to how long a large number of our squad are on the injury list, is there something wrong with our training methods, do we have a physio, or are they all waiting for appointments at Wigan infirmary, can anybody shed any light on this. the club should keep us more informed.
P.s. I don’t post very often, had to get this off my chest, 50 years a latic.

Agree with all of that.
Also, I’ve heard exactly the same with regards to Pearce and Morsy.

Which should serve to shut up the “why did we get rid of Caldwell” brigade. But it won’t.
18 December 2016 at 1:22 pm #153241Take out the penalty and we draw which at the end of the day won’t keep us up.
For the first 30 minutes we were awful. Lobbing balls up to Will Grigg on the half way line with his back to goal is just not good enough.
Again, a couple of excellent balls fizzed across the box and Griggs no were to be seen, in Jan cash in on him before he’s worth fook all. If your gonna do that then stick Davies there and Grigg play off his shoulder.
At 2-1 down Ipswich make 2 attacking changes and the whole game changed, at 2-2 we didn’t.
I’m afraid unless the Jan window throws up one or 2 surprises we’ll be going down faster than Debby does Dallas.18 December 2016 at 2:03 pm #153243There were quite a few balls fizzed across the box but was it Grigg not being there or poor crosses or should we have had more men in the box? Grigg was everywhere yesterday.
Overall we were desperately unlucky yesterday and at last creating chances and working very hard. A good win at Huddersfield, a good dogged showing against Villa, a great second half against Derby, a decent go at Newcastle. The tide is changing and Latics are on the up. Hopefully some good moves in the market next month.18 December 2016 at 3:00 pm #153245There were quite a few balls fizzed across the box but was it Grigg not being there or poor crosses or should we have had more men in the box? 18 December 2016 at 3:22 pm #153246Sorry but I am not making excuses for Grigg. Some of the passing from centre of midfield to Yanic yesterday was top notch. Yanics runs and drbbles were top notch. Will Grigg covered acres of ground yesterday but what let us down in the box was the wayward passing of Yanic. In the last five minutes or so Yan squandered two chances, one shot was skyed and the other flew across the box when he just needed to tap it to Will. Despite that I had him as man of the match with Grigg second behind him.Others may see it differently but that’s my opinion.
18 December 2016 at 4:09 pm #153247The only top notch passes to Yanic that I remember came from Gomez which probably suggests the rest were routine.
We all know Wildschut does’t always choose the best option but he and others put enough balls into the box yesterday for a so called “poacher” to get on the end of and produce a decent effort on goal. Is that not his so called strength?18 December 2016 at 4:41 pm #153248If he was twelve foot tall and had seven foot long legs he may have had a chance of reaching some of those crosses but come on this match was a marked improvement on anything this season. Well after the first twenty minutes it was and at least crosses are coming in. If the pair of them play together and others from midfield push up into the box we will stand a chance of staying up.
18 December 2016 at 4:57 pm #153250An observation based on how many games you’ve see this season?
18 December 2016 at 5:07 pm #153251Admire Donnys optimism……half full glass….Here’s mine…..Great win at Huddersfield….Poor and lost at Villa…Crap against Derby and lost….Embarrassing for 80 mins against Newcastle and you guessed…lost again….Played better in spells but hey ho…lost again……..we are 2nd button because there is only 1 team worse than us.
18 December 2016 at 5:19 pm #153252Unfortunately we will never know what the score would have been n a level playing field.Had the referee not given the penalty (he was the only person on the pitch, including all the ipswich players and management, who thought it was) I am sure our heads wouldn’t have been down for the next 25 minutes and who knows what we could have done. saying that we did have the penalty against us and so needed to get over it and not dwell. i would have preferred the ref to have done his job properly so we could see what the proper result would have been

Perhaps even he himself (including a few others) is not a championship player
