Decent start to the season so far. But does anyone think that Bobby doesn’t always get the subs right?? I feel that the little things like bringing the right players on at the right time etc hindered us last year and it may do the same again. Dont get me wrong im glad weve finally found the right formation but sometimes I feel he can choose the wrong players to come on. For example Jones coming on for beausejour, in my opinion surely giving ryo a chance so he could whip in some crosses and attack down the flank would have give us a better chance of finding that extra goal. Maybe im wrong but I just feel when we approach the 70min mark in games we dont always use the correct players and i feel this is where we may start dropping points if we are not careful. Dont know if im the only person who feels this way.
Views welcome?

I don’t think bringing on Ryo that early in the game would have been a smart move. Roberto referred to the physical nature of Stoke’s challenge in both pre and post match interviews and I think Jones represented a better option defensively. I don’t think Figs is very strong in the air (as evidenced by Crouch’s goal) so having a line up with Figs and Ryo on the left would have been inviting trouble in my eyes.

The whole substitutions debate comes up with whatever manager is in charge. Despite our success with him, Paul Jewell particularly seemed to get slated about his substitutions, leading to him going off on one about fans that play a little too much of Football Manager. Without wanting to start a Martinez love in, he’s got a much better idea of the squads capability than anybody else. Up until the point where we start to under achieve and head towards that relegation zone, I’m going to resist from being overly-critical of things.

As Refined Lemur said, the manager trains with the players on a daily basis and knows what they can and can’t do.
On Saturday – Jones for Beasejour was the best option available.
Beasejour was playing as a wingback, so his role is as defensive as it is attacking. Jones was the only player on the bench who has any defensive qualities.
What’s the point of bringing an attacking player on if it leaves you wide open at the back?
4 September 2012 at 5:54 pm #92550not just me then.
ive said this all along, Bobby picks his team, starts with plan A then if it dont work plan B (including sub’s) is non existant. Jones is no where near good enough, neither is Gomez. I have a bet with pep every time he comes on the pitch as to how many times he either A) back passes from an attacking option, or B) throws him self on the deck, and finally c) loses the ball through fucking about.
give me one season in this job, i will have us in the top 6
4 September 2012 at 6:59 pm #92554While I do agree that at times, Bobby’s substitutions last season seemed a bit odd, I also agree that he knows the squad better than anyone, working with them day in and out. With regards to the Jones for Beausejour sub, that was the right move for the players that were on the bench. Personally, I would have preferred a player like Stam to come in, who does have defensive capabilities and a good extra attacking option, but he wasn’t on the bench.
I think that this season we have really strengthened all areas of the squad (with the exception of GK, I wouldn’t fancy Polly for a long stint). I think that I wouldn’t be too worried about subs, injuries, suspensions etc because we have excellent depth in the squad with the likes of Watson, Gomez, Boselli, Stam who don’t get into the first 11 but are excellent cover. With regards to Bobby’s subs, at times they are odd, but for the large part, he does OK. He has to find the balance between killing games off, allowing tired legs to get a rest and to give younger players a start at times and I think he does this well. Many people were calling for young Callum to come on in the Stoke game but would that have been the right option? Ryo gave us an added flair and speed and he’s largely unproven so he’s got something to show.
I think you need to give Bobby more credit for his subs than before. Also, remember that Beausejour was injured, it wasn’t a tactical sub but a necessity. Also, Mitty, are you for real? Why do you think Jewell commented about fans who spend too much time on FM?
4 September 2012 at 7:39 pm #92555my latter comment was a tad tongue in cheek, and i also assume that (thanks to google) FM is football manager online game? sorry, i dont do games, i have a life and im not a student or a pimple faced teenager.
also, are you seriously suggesting the likes of Gomex, Watson, Stam et al are good cover? for who… leigh RMI? Gomez spends his life backwards, Watson cant clear the first defender on a set piece…. ever, and stam is far to hit and miss.
might as well bring don page and paul rodgers back, plus give G. Jones his boots back
4 September 2012 at 8:26 pm #92563OK fair enough about FM, I’ve only played a bit myself and I’m crap, there’s just a lot people who think they could be managers because they’re not bad on computer games!
But I still think you’re way too harsh on those kinds of players, you can’t fault Gomez so far this season. He doesn’t spend his life backwards, he’s just a player who passes it about, makes space and creates chances. There’s a reason he’s not in the first 11 but that doesn’t mean him and Watson and Stam, who I really rate are bad players. Stam is by far one of the better crossers in our squad, Watson has composure in midfield (although I accept his set-pieces are awful) and overall I think that, yeah, we do have good cover in our squad, certainly better than in recent years that is!
4 September 2012 at 8:43 pm #92570its good that we have players of this quality on the bench, fair play to rm for improving the squad to this extent
4 September 2012 at 10:36 pm #92580Some valid points, I am by no means a football manager person (not enuf hours in the day). I understand with jones coming on defensively but still I felt we lacked in the final third. Too many times we bring the game down to a halt in the corners and letting the defenders regroup. I just thought Ryo would have been effective getting up and down the pitch with him being young. I agree RM has put together a strong squad this year and the NF game proved that. I just think timing is key for subs and would like to see measures to prevent goals rather than reacting after one has gone in.
4 September 2012 at 11:00 pm #92583Hold guys ,we are saying what decent start we are having and RM is getting some kind of consistency and then knocking him about his subs ,back off and leave the man to it!
5 September 2012 at 1:14 am #92605Watson is akin to Sammon class wise and eventually the penny will drop for RM.
5 September 2012 at 1:52 am #92614When did Martinez ever get his subs right????????????????????
