Listening to Talk Sport on the way home it was mentioned that the ref blew the whistle for half time as the ball was in mid-air and the goal should have counted. I saw it differently, and thought Kirkland was walking off to the tunnel after he heard the whistle therefore leaving an easy chance for them.

If there hadnt been a whistle they wudda scored damage had already been done ! We were lucky !
14 September 2009 at 11:34 am #8692I can’t understand the fuss about that “goal” on half time.
For one, football isn’t (thank feck) like rugby league. When the whistle is blown that is it. You don’t blow the whistle & wait for the ball to go out of play before the half is over. Zola said on one of the highlights programmes that there was no need for the ref to blow the whistle when he did. Sorry Gianfranco but yes there was – it was because the half was over. End of story
Secondly, having seen the highlights a couple of times, the whistle is blown just as Cole wins the initial ball & not (like I heard he guy on talksport describe it) as it was on its way into the net14 September 2009 at 2:05 pm #8696It was hardly Clive Thomas and Zico from World Cup 1978, was it?
I cannot believe it is even being debated.
But then again, every little thing causes a mass debate, these days.
Debate on, all you mass-debaters, LOL! (I’m kidding)
Ref had blown for half-time. Kirkland was walking off (admittedly, he was moving away from his line quicker than at any time during play…..barring that save, and the last minute catch.)
In no possible way, was it a goal. If Wiley had given it, we’d have gone crazy.
14 September 2009 at 4:24 pm #8704It was never a foul anyway that lead to the free kick. Just sayin like.
14 September 2009 at 5:19 pm #8706It was never a foul anyway that lead to the free kick. Just sayin like.I heard a telly pundit over the weekend , not sure who , refer to Hendry Thomas’ tackle as the best tackle of the weekend, and Wiley probably realised he’d got it wrong. He therefore blew up as soon as he could , so West Ham couldn’t capitalise.
It’s the same when a ref gives a corner & the players reactions obviously indicate he’s got it wrong , it’s amazing how many times ,from the resulting corner, the ref will spot a push by an attacker & give a free kick.
Anyway Wiley certainly owed us one.

At least that was one thing he got right

18 September 2009 at 12:00 am #9001Surely if they paid on the door it’s because THEIR support was poor. Unless they were in the Wigan end of course.
As for Wigan not being the nicest of places…..has he ever been outside the ground at West Ham? Quite possibly the scruffiest place on earth.
18 September 2009 at 12:22 am #9004And that pub the Queens is like that bar of star wars
