I remember Good Friday against Port Vale when I was a kid, probably around 78 or 79.

I think we were losing 3-0 with 20 minutes left.

On comes the unpronounceable and very Scottish George or was it Frank ? Urquhart and bingo !

It was 1979, but because I was nine, I only remember the final score and the fact that hundreds of Wigan fans left before the end – when it was 3-0 to Port Vale. Some things never change eh?

The promotion game versus Reading wins it for me.

Bloody hell, there’s loads of games that stick in the memory for loads of different reasons but for sheer enjoyment of what is happening on the pitch this one always sticks in my head:

December 26th 1994 away at Bury. Game probably shouldn’t have taken place as there was standing water all over the pitch & the ball could barely travel more than 6 yards along the ground. That made for a the sort of blood & guts, ding dong, affair I enjoy with the lead changing back & forth. From memory I think we may have gone 1-0 down & then 2-1 in front & then 3-2 down when Mark Lenoard got put clean through in fron of the away end (when it was down the other end of the pitch from where it is now), he rounded the keeper & had an open net & all he needed to do was keep the ball off the floor when he kicked it, However being the super striker that he was he decided to side foot it along the floor & it hit & mud & water patch, slowed down & 2 Bury defenders were able to get past him & hack the ball away. At least that’s what i thought but the liner flagged it had gone over so I quickly had to stop my rant at Leonard.
      Think it finished 3-3.
Dunno why that game sticks in the mid more than some

More obvious mentions must go to both Coventry cup games in 1991 & the City Worthington Cup game in 2002

I remember that game at Bury. Leonard was wheeling away in celebration, then was like ‘oh oh!!!’ I’d forgot the ball actually went in though.

In my time as a fan, I’m finding it hard to pinpoint one game only. Leeds away, when we won 2-0 (Bullard and Mahon) was one of the first times I thought “hey, we really can do this!” (get to top flight) And we took about 4,000 there. (proper fans)

PNE away, won 4-2, when Roberts scored after 34 seconds, was also fantastic.

My first ever away game was Bolton at Burnden Park in 1987-88, in the League Cup. 3-2 down from the first leg, things didn’t look good when Jeff Chandler (I think) put them one up on the night. 4-2 down and their fans were loving it. Enter a certain Mr Bobby Campbell. He hit a hat-trick, the first a ‘Geoff Hurst 1966’ type, bouncing down off the bar, which the linesman gave. A thumping shot. 4-3. Game on. The second came from a header. 4-4. Then in the last minute, Paul Jewell also hit a bar-ground shot, the ball bounced up, and Campbell, with a bullet header, scored. He ended up in the back of the net with the ball. What a night that was! Still a massive highlight for me.

The Reading match, for the sheer realisation of our target, was fantastic. As was the atmosphere. I was a bit bitter at a lot of the ‘whoppers’ who suddenly climbed on the back of it (Still am) as we seemed to gain 9,000 extra fans overnight. I remember the people who went all over the pitch, some d-ick with no shirt on and a baldy head. Had he actually ever been before? I’d never seen him. Nor have I seen him since. Still, he got to have his 15 mins of fame, eh? The celebrations were good, but were invaded from 8pm onwards, by a load of people who had never given us the steam off their excrement, and then they started to suddenly act ‘Mr Wigan Athletic’. I went home at that point. Glad we’d got promoted, but disgusted that so many gob shytes had already started taking ‘pieces of the pie’. So a bitter-sweet day for me.

Loved the Leeds game, was amazing (dont think I would pinpoint it as one of my favourites, and was my first time at Elland road and was a bit disappointed, expected it to be better).. and the preston game was also a good game but took absolutely hours to get home after that one, remember the Radio on the way home raving about how it was the ‘Best debut someone has made for wigan athletic.
Dont think I was alive for some of the games you mentioned but the Reading game was a Key moment in the clubs history so obviously that has to be up there.
I cant help but think of the last game at highbury, it was just surreal, We was sat next to Paul Scharners Mum, Dad, Brother and Mum in the stadium after they came talking to us because I had Scharner on my back. As I was younger I went with my parents and remember getting offered like £1500 for our tickets (to which we obviously said no). It was just a very memorable game. I also saw Matt Lucas :D

Preston away was always the best for me. When we won 4-2 and the game we had 3,000 balloons (1 for every fan) but, there were far more than 3,000 there as I spent the 1st 20 mins stood on the edge of the pitch. The police weren’t ready for such a huge away following that day! The game after that was Reading at home which was a fantastic memory and also, because of the buzz and drama that day the Sheff Utd away game will always be a favourite of mine.

I used to love going to the likes of Oldham, Wrexham, Port Vale, Walsall, Bury, etc when in the lower leagues. My dad used to take both me and my brother, the memories live on!

I think it would be either Man City in the 3rd round of the cup in 71 when I was little and thought the Latics would always be a non-league club – and wasn’t really bothered if they were – or the first Premiership match against Chelsea when the “new” ground was full, there were people from all over the world watching – and playing- and it honestly felt like I was dreaming.

Whilst the Reading game was superb I wish we’d gone up at PNE the week before (well a few hours later had Ipswich lost). I don’t think I slept that week.

Why? Not tired?.. Should have got some sleeping pills ;)

                  My favourite ever match?

I’d definitely have to go for Swan Vestas just for the box.

Different seasons. Preston away before the Reading game ended 1-1. The 4-2 was at the beginning of the season – no reason for us to have 3000 balloons.

So many but here’s a few of mine.

                    Championship against Reading 2005
                    No need to explain that

Those home games against Norwich and Hull in 1987 which saw us get to the quarter-final of the FA Cup and lose to Leeds.
How did Bobby Campbell miss that header?

Freight Rover Final against Brentford 1985
We played them off the park when everyone else including Screen Sport – who did the TV coverage – thought we were there to make up the numbers.

                    FA Cup against Birmingham 1978
Although we lost 4-0 we played some great football which won us lots of votes and got us elected to the league.

FA Cup against Man City 1971
Fairytale stuff which nearly, but not quite, came true.

Of the games I was at in order

                    Reading at home for promotion
                    Away at Coventry in cup
Away at Leeds 2-0 in Championship
Away at Liverpool League cup (whilst we were 2-1 up……)

Someone mentioned Reading home being bitter sweet because of all the glory seekers turning up. Slightly harsh I thought! I know a lot of people who went that day, who maybe go to 6-10 games a year. OK, they aren’t diehards, but they’ve supported Latics at some level for a long time. And we’d have been gutted on a day when we needed to win to get up if the ground had been half empty….

                    #19059

:D i forgot about sending nob end down,i think we still had a long shot chance of getting in to the play offs if tranmere got beat by 5 goals or something silly like that.i remember us in the old town end when it was for away fans.i remember a pne fan stood on crazy corner blubbing like a baby after the game and the latics fans singing cry baby cry baby cry baby and the nob end fan having a wobbler which just made us do even more.

                    happy days :D

In that Bury game, did Leonard actually score that goal? I’m sure it didnt go in. The other memory of that game was Neil Rimmer placing a perfect chip over the keeper from something like 30 yards, only too see the ball hit a puddle and stop dead…keeper just turned round and picked it up out of the mud.
