22 January 2010 at 2:08 am #19091Preston away was always the best for me. When we won 4-2 and the game we had 3,000 balloons (1 for every fan) but, there were far more than 3,000 there as I spent the 1st 20 mins stood on the edge of the pitch. The police weren’t ready for such a huge away following that day!
Alex, here’s a photo of the Latics away following that day from the home end.
22 January 2010 at 2:20 am #19092The Swan Vesta i found in the corner of a bus stop late one night after missing the last bus home and no light for a cig ! ;)
22 January 2010 at 4:10 am #191012 February 2010 at 3:15 am #20921Not sure which was my favourite ever match – Reading and Arsenal defo up there – but probably Leeds away.
Result was unbelievable and took us 5 points clear if I remember rightly? Also notable for the brilliant “The team is Wigan, the miracle is Paul Jewell” feature on the front page of Monday’s Guardian sport section.
But even more memorable for the comments from a Leeds fan on a local radio phone in on the way home, who couldn’t believe they’d lost to us. The radio presenter explained why we were so good, but all the fan could reply was “Burr its Wiggun?!?!?!”However, the BEST ever match I’ve seen has to be the play off final against Gillingham (and weirdly the highlights have just been shown on Late Kick Off). Apart from the result that game had everything…though in some ways I think not getting promoted that day was a blessing in disguise as we’d probably have come straight back down…and the last 10 years would probably never have happened
2 February 2010 at 3:19 am #20923Defo the 1-1 last away game. Went mental when McCulloch put us 1 up.
2 February 2010 at 3:17 pm #20979Chelsea away 1980.
Loads of emotion, thought the game was gong to be called off, Tommy Gore just before half-time, watching the clock waiting for the whistle, final whistle goes and a few folk falls down the terraces.
I can’t remember many games or much else about the 80s.
Favourite recent game was when we beat Bolton in the first season in the Prem. Old hatred dies hard
2 February 2010 at 5:08 pm #20994Some great memories here!
I cant say the Preston or Reading games as like Brett Ormerod id been recalled to faraway shores (or mallorca working). and im still sure that he was recalled to stop us going up!
Leeds was a great game but for me it would have top be either the Gillingham playoff final till the German turned up, Stoke 6-1 or some of the Blackpool games!
However for best overall it will always have to be torquay in about 96/97 it seemed like all of Wigan had taken over Torquay and it was my first proper away trip with a stay over! We are going up!
2 February 2010 at 6:23 pm #21000In that Bury game, did Leonard actually score that goal? I’m sure it didnt go in. The other memory of that game was Neil Rimmer placing a perfect chip over the keeper from something like 30 yards, only too see the ball hit a puddle and stop dead…keeper just turned round and picked it up out of the mud.I don’t think it went in but the liner definitely gave it
13 April 2013 at 1:19 am #109058Remember further back to the days of beating Shrewsbury and Mansfield in FA Cup.
On my dads shoulders when Maurice Whiitle scored at the Park.Beating Scarborough 7-0 at springy and BOB SCORING
But best of all was the day we beat SCUM UTD and cost them the league….. Pay back to all those Wigan lads who support the manc tossers.

Scarborough 7-1 at home, the game wasn’t that good but it will always stick in my head, Mansfield at home when we won 3rd division. Crewe away when we won 3-2, west ham 3-2 to send them down and everton in the quarters. These stick out for me

13 April 2013 at 10:28 am #109085So many but Arsenal away in CC wins it for me ,and to be there made it even sweeter. The famous Port Vale win when Peter Houghtons 15 min hat trick gave us an unlikely victory holds a special place for me.
13 April 2013 at 2:28 pm #109098So many memorable games to choose from.
But my absolute favourite has to be thrashing stoke 6-1 :woohoo:

Wigan 4 Chelsea 2 in the league cup back in the 80’s. Mark Wignall scored with a chip, then scored an absolute screamer from thirty yards. The next round was another favourite as we drew the then league champions Villa. Went 1 nil up through Peter Houghton, but couldn’t hang on and ended up losing 1-2.
13 April 2013 at 5:19 pm #109107Newcastle 4-0 (last season)
Wigan at their most clinical / ‘barcelonesque’
magic day in the midst of an impressive run-in (massive pressure to boot).
Pardew speechless !!!
Other: Reading 3-1
