Wonder if the UK’s press/media pick the red side of Liverpool up on the 12,000 missing fans at Anfield tonight?

      Liverpool v Reading 31,063 (13/01/2010)

      Liverpool v Arsenal 43,853 (13/12/2009)

Or the missing 30,000+ at The mighty Toon

If I were you guys, I would worry about about crowds and not anyone
          else’s.
5000+ was pathetic for an FA cup tie. We would have got nearly double that 20 years ago.
See how far we have come.

Tha’s reet John. A lot of our fans treat watching the team as optional and gave the cup game the swerve. Individually they all had their excuses but collectively it caused us embarasment. Most of our support has come along or returned to the fold since sky came along and made it acceptable to watch the game on the telly, or via the internet or treat the fa cup as a second class competition. Everton away, Leeds home, Chelsea away, Southampton away as well as Leek, Barrow and Alty were some great fa cup days. As someone else said on here doesn’t matter if its the reserves, or who the opposition is, we support the team, the eleven who are wearing the shirt and since when has £15 been too expensive, you’ll not get in many League Two for that price, just excuses. The same people will have no problem finding £60-£80 for coach, ticket and ale money to go to Notts Co or Forest Green

Totally agree with that. We’d have even had them down at the ground clearing straw/snow to get the game on.

See how far we have come.

Now that’s a bit daft because for a league fixture 20 years ago, we’d have had 3,500 on. Now we average nearer to 20,000. That’s how far we’ve come.

The FA Cup is no longer our shot at a bit of glory. These days we play the big boys every week.

            Not quite double is it????

Research is the key, this is why I hate lazy journos……

Took me less than 5 minutes to find these results.

That’s a very good link, thanks, may I add a few.
            Hull 1986 11,500
            Chesterfied. 81, 9000
            Northwich Victoria, 77, 11000
            Sheff. Wed, 77, 13000

Right lets go back a bit further and then tell me if the support is still there.

            1970 Peterboro, 17300
            1969 Port vale, 12000
            1953 Newcastle 26000
            There’s more.

Like I said, thanks for the link, good one.

            BTW I’m not a journo and………………… I’m not lazy. :?

And Barrow took 9000 fans with them when they played Sunderland the other week.
If that many went to every home game they wouldn’t be in the conference much longer

20, 30, 40 years ago the FA Cup was one of the highlights of the season for Latics. Like it or not it no longer is.
The same can be said of plenty of other clubs. Its a sad state of affairs but not one that we at Latics should be any more ashamed of than dozens of other clubs

            #18264

Like you say, no longer a highlight.
When do you think, and why, did all this dis-interest start. Maybe it’s the obession with top clubs wanting the champions league along with the priority of staying in the EPL for the others.
Nevertheless, I maintain that 5k+ was a shocking attendance, god help us if it were a team from outside the prem. we were playing that day.
Now that WOULD have been embarrasing.
            2000 anyone.

“When do you think, and why, did all this dis-interest start”

For me personally it was the late 90’s as we started to climb the leagues. The FA Cup became less of the big deal it was when I started watching Latics
Not saying its reet but its what happened – the feeling increased as our managers then started to put out weakened sides.
I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to fork out £15 of their hard earned cash to watch 2 mostly reserve sides regardless of whether we’re a top flight team or not. I went coz it was the first game me & my mates have been able to get to together all season. If it hadn’t been I wouldn’t have gone either, just like I didn’t go to a game in the carling cup run of 2005/06 until the semi-final coz Jewell put out weakened sides
Maybe that’s coz I’m very much from the old school train of thought that believes you should play your strognest available side in every game regardless of the opposition or competition

I think the same 5000 would have been there whoever we had played. The opposition of the day, albeit PL was hardly going to generate that much interest.
On paper it was going to be a dull affair between two reserve sides. It turned out to be a decent match, and in my opinion well worth the entrance fee.

If we had played a lower league side, or a localish non league team, the chances are the crowd would have been higher, as their fans would have turned out in greater numbers aswell.

It was a poor attendance, and there is no way of really justifying it, but what gets most of our backs up is that it appears to be only us that get chastised about it, and it is always an unbalanced report.

I suppose we are still a bit paranoid. We’ll be accepted sooner or later.
              Or will we?
Is everyone against us? Do they all hate us? Or is that just the way I feel?
Paranoid? Who’s paranoid? Me? Don’t call me paranoid, everyone thinks that, and I’m not… Am I?

For me, it’s simple. Almost everything in the game today is driven by money. It starts at the top when the big teams who can afford big squads started playing a second string, so they could focus on the riches of the Premiership and Champions Laegue. Teams like Wigan, desperate to get to the Prem, followed suit. All in the pursuit of money.

The big question is how to reverse this trend and again I’m a simple soul, so my answer is very one dimensional. Winners go into Champions League. That one action would trigger the greed in almost all clubs, desperate to qualify. that would revitalise interest overnight.

That’s certainley a better idea than 2nd, 3rd, and fourth placed in the league.

                #18276

The ‘big’ clubs won’t go for it because there is clearly more chance of them NOT winning the FA Cup than coming 4th in the league.

A play-off between the FA cup winners and the 4th placed league team would be an interesting compromise.
