Article in Observer today suggests criticism of the man is more than a little out of order. Perhaps some people have axes to grind for other reasons but as a man who has taken a little club into the biggest league in the world he deserves credit- if not hero worship. Players will continue to be sold. But then most clubs will be doing the same.

“Some of the owners are still English, even hometown men-made-good, such as Dave Whelan at Wigan, and Peter Coates, whose bet365 Group has invested in Stoke City’s robust recent rise.

Wigan’s accounts for 2008 noted Whelan celebrating the club’s “momentous” Premier League survival, at a cost of losing £11.2m, and accumulating net debts of £48.2m. The auditors wrote: “These conditions indicate the existence of a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”
“Without Whelan’s financial contribution, and the support of the banks, Wigan would be bust. That same warning has been reproduced in other clubs’ most recent financial reports, including Hull City’s and, most sobering, Liverpool’s. The overspending trickles down into the Football League, where Championship clubs are desperate to reach the Premier League, yet have to survive on far less TV money: £3m on average per club compared with £40m. When Lord Mawhinney, the League’s chairman, announced in November that he would be resigning this spring, he noted that 70% of clubs had changed owners in his seven years, said overspending was the league’s worst blight and called again for a salary cap.[/size]

Man Utd debt is reportedly £600 million with an interest rate of over 14% on a large part of it ! Now thats a debt !! A bad season of no trophies could mark the beginning of the end for them ! Remember Leeds !

      Evil baron or Protector?

Wigan fans normally fall into one of two camps; those who workhave worked for one of Whelan’s various enterprises (Evil Baron camp) and those who have no such axe to grind (Protector of the cause camp).

Makin , can you explain the reasons you chose the phrase “Evil Baron” , i can understand the protector one but why would he be an evil baron?

Must confess griff to being in neither camp, being right in between the two was my position, appreciative of what he had done for us whilst wondering who was going to be sold next, and wondering where the sky millions had gone. Didn’t DW say earlier in the season
that our debt was very low compared to other clubs, think he said we were just 15 million in debt, that being the case it shows the sky money has been going to pay off the club’s debts. My viewpoint would now swing towards the protector of the cause, HOWEVER before resetting the pendulem, I will just wait and see if our big two players key to our premiership survival remain after the transfer window.

I’d be more or less with you on that Colbob, and I am prepared to stick my neck out and say that neither Rodallega nor N’Zogbia will be sold this month. The summer maybe, but not January. Hope so anyway.

That said, I think everyone falls into the middle ground camp labelled “cantankerous old sod who can’t keep his gob shut on any subject uner the sun but really should do so on a much more frequent basis”

You’re right there Griff. I wish he would keep a lower profile at times.
Years ago when The Latics were never mentioned on TV etc, it was good to see him and our name on TV, but now when he comes on you cringe and wait for the embarrassing comments to flow.

Given he’s already publically started the summer sales with his quote, I think it’s fairly safe to say that at least some of our better players won’t be with us for the start of next season. As for my opinion of Whelan, I’m lucky not to have worked for him, so it’s a slightly distanced view.

His aim has always been to be Mr Wigan, which is largely why he bought into the three clubs in the area. I think he quickly realised that football was the highest profile, hence the demise of Orrell and dropping the chubsters like a hot potato. We’ve all gained from the ride to the Premiership, even if the holy grail has been a major disappointment.

He’ll sell the club as one of the few in the country on a break-even footing and will probably make a nice profit if he sells us while in the Premiership. The interesting times will come when we know who he’s selling us to.

We can separate the two camps here , the anti Dave Whelan brigade who have no business nous whatsoever , you can find these people stacking shelves , McDonalds , wharehouses etc
and have the usual workers v boss mentality.

The pro Dave Whelan are people who have brains in their heads , company bosses and the higher end of the employment ladder , people who know what it takes to balance books and make a business work.

You know which camp you are in and you know im correct.

I don’t think this applies to just Wigan Athletic supporters either.

When Sky Sports News interview people outside places like St James’ Park, I’d wager a decent amount of money on the assumption that few of those wearing replica shirts and singing ‘Sack The Board’ are GPs, Solicitors, or Merchant Bankers.
