Timing of Coyles sacking absolutely perfect.
Total respect for DW.
Coyles hopeless selections, substitutions and tactics will not be missed.
Heres hoping we get back to playing with a proper degree of style that the squad should be capable of.
New manager and maloney return will see us rising up the table.
6 December 2013 at 11:29 pm #124462I agree to the most part. In my eyes, DW is the reason we have achieved all that we have done, he IS wigan athletic through and through….. and he was right to get rid of mr coyle when he did- good timing indeed. the only problem is that it was a mistake to bring mr coyle to the club in the first place. so I hope he takes a bit of time to make the next decision. it could be the difference between getting back to the premier league or slipping back down to lower league mediocrity… either way, I’ll stick with the team though.
6 December 2013 at 11:57 pm #124463If Rosler does come to us are there any Brentford players that are likely to follow ? , I wouldn’t have a clue is there’s any players at Brentford worth poaching.
7 December 2013 at 12:22 am #124466Who remembers the Brentford Nylon tv adverts ?

I think that was his idea from his outset, 12 month contract, whoever takes it only has to be paid out a few months compo if it goes pear shaped with all the matches being played. Add to that he knew there was a substantial pot in jan if he left the McCarthy sale to the last minute. Don’t let coyle blow it if he was going to balls up. I think he was slightly unfortunate that only coyle would take the job but now we are not too far off the play off place, were likely out of Europe and Rosler or whoever has a couple of years and a few quid to spend with only the league and promotion to concentrate on.
7 December 2013 at 2:46 am #124475But Coyle didn’t sign a 12 month contract. He signed a 12 month rolling contract, as did Martinez before him.
7 December 2013 at 5:36 am #124478A 12 month rolling contract means that it will be renewed automatically after 12 months all being well – which it wasn’t. It doesn’t mean it “rolls on” month by month. His contract was still due to expire in July or whenever.
However, even if he had a 3 year fixed contract he wouldn’t be paid the full amount. A contract says that you will work for us in this particular role doing this and that, and we will pay you an agreed amount. And that’s what happens “all being well”.
Whelan has now said we are finishing this contract because you aren’t producing the goods. We stop it now, you’re fired (or mutually agree that in the best interests etc etc) and we aren’t paying you any more salary. The contract is torn up.
Coyle has two options. Option one is that he can take the club to Employment Tribunal claiming unfair dismissal and/or a civil action for breach of contract. The huge disadvantage to him is that (a) if he loses he has to pay substantial costs, and (b) the club’s defence will be that he has in fact broken the contract first by not living up to his side of the bargain. He hasn’t done the job he was employed to do. His methods, his relationships with the team and owner, his effectiveness etc will all be put under public scrutiny.
The alternative is that he agrees an amount (called “a compromise agreement”) in return for taking no further action against the employer. Obviously this is NOT the full amount of wages due. He has a reasonable pay-off, and walks away without details of his reign being hung out for public interest, and importantly for future possible employers to pore over.
7 December 2013 at 9:12 am #124479But posters here are calling Martinez Judas because he did not renew his contract.
Dave Whelan said, “I didn’t sack Owen. I had a meeting with him after the game and I told (him) I was disappointed in the performance of the team and in his team selection.
“Owen said did I want him to resign and I said ‘yes, if you’ll resign we will obviously have to pay compensation’ but I accepted his word and he has resigned.”
7 December 2013 at 1:07 pm #124483Martinez didn’t renew his contract when it came up for renewal on the rolling basis. The net effect is of course that he no longer wanted to stay with the club. Whelan agreed to him not renewing, so there was a sound mutual agreement on friendly terms. As the contract was up for renewal neither side broke a contract, as it had expired, but if all had been going well and he had wished to stay then another contract would have been put in place.
With Coyle, despite the rhetoric, what has happened is that they have quickly reached a compromise agreement. All this “do you want me to resign” and “yes if you will” stuff is smoke and mirrors. We all know that if Coyle hadn’t resigned (which technically strengthens DW’s position as it’s OC who has broken the contract) then DW would have sacked him. The overall outcome, publically, is the same. Contract torn up and OC is paid off an amount, which will have been less than the outstanding pay over the period ahead.
I’m just stating employment law.
7 December 2013 at 2:49 pm #124488Thanks – I understand what you’re saying.
Aston Villa wanted Martinez twelve months earlier. But he chose to extend his contract with Wigan for another year, and took us to Wembley.
If Martinez saw his contract out, then how can people call him Judas?
7 December 2013 at 4:07 pm #124491Thought Martinez had signed a new 2yr contract last year. maybe wrong, if that was the case didn’t everton pay us compo
Roberto Martinez signs new three-year contract with Wigan
Posted by Dan in Comment, News On June 10, 2011Roberto will repay Whelan’s faith
Following 48 hours of intense speculation over the Spaniard’s future, Roberto Martinez has opted to stay at Wigan Athletic, putting pen to paper in a contract that will keep him at the club for three more years. It is thought Martinez rejected a deal with Aston Villa worth around twice his current contract because of the faith chairman Dave Whelan has placed in him over the course of his time at Wigan
7 December 2013 at 4:48 pm #124493Thanks – If Martinez saw his contract out, then how can people call him Judas? It’s the manner in which he departed, after openly ( on numerous occasions ) stating how much the club meant to him and then not having the balls or pride to fight on and get us back to the Prem. So it was just empty words, lies or spin; so why spout all that drivel in the first place. At least with Steve Bruce you always knew it was just a job, nothing more.
As for the FA Cup, we won it because he abandoned his league tactics of safety first, let’s keep the point that we theoretically have before the whistle is blown for kick the kick off. A more adventurous style / strategy would have seen us safely retain our Premiership status; despite the few injuries we had !
7 December 2013 at 5:28 pm #124498Was three at the back a safety first tactic? No, not at all. A bigger budget and a larger squad would have helped.
Martinez made the most of his limited resources. These actually got less as other clubs were spending more than ever before.
7 December 2013 at 5:44 pm #124499It is thought Martinez rejected a deal with Aston Villa worth around twice his current contract because of the faith chairman Dave Whelan has placed in him over the course of his time at WiganThis indicates that Martinez did care! The next year, he turned down Liverpool.
So Martinez gave us two more years and a successful trip to Wembley.
He was always bound for greater things. We were lucky to have him for four years.
8 December 2013 at 3:59 pm #124534Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that Owen Coyle’s exit has cost the club “in the region of £500,000”.
Happy Christmas, Owen. At least you can afford another turkey!
