Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has asked the clubs supporters to get behind both the team and the manager ahead of Saturdays clash against Chelsea.
The Latics made the worst possible start to the season last weekend when newly promoted Blackpool put 4 goals past Chris Kirkland and left the home fans at the DW Stadium in a state of shock as they had hoped for a positive start to the campaign.
Once again a section of supporters at the club have started to turn on manager Roberto Martinez and have been calling for his head to roll for most of the past week, but is that the answer?
It is obvious that certain supporters and indeed certain members of the local press have had the knives out for Martinez since he arrived at the club and they actual seem to revel in the big defeats and poor performances that have occurred over the past twelve months, what their reasons or motives are I have no idea.
It is fair to say though that the Latics were truly shocking last week, they appeared to be caught cold by a Blackpool side that were full of vigour, direct and certainly got amongst the play to unsettle the Wigan players on the ball, but it was the first game of the season and these things have a habit of happening.
Last year we went to Villa Park on the opening day and played Aston Villa off the pitch to get a fantastic start to the season, Everton were absolutely dreadful as they fell 6-1 to Arsenal at Goodison Park, so it isn`t unheard of for a shock result coupled with a poor performance.
Now Latics owner Dave Whelan is asking for the supporters to get behind the boss and help the Latics bounce back, Whelan said: “Calling for the manager to be sacked doesn`t really help anybody”
“We are in this together. I`m hoping we can bounce back but the Blackpool defeat didn`t really surprise me.”

What planet is this idiot on???? To say he wasn’t surprised by the Blackpool defeat when the rest of Wigan and football fans in general were gob smacked.
This w*nker wants us to get behind the team???? He should give us a team and manager worth getting behind before it’s to late.
Great quote and exactly what us supporters should do.
Let DW take care of the staffing issues, we have absolutely no bearing on it. He won’t sack someone because we are shouting for, all we do is demoralise the team and management.
Support anybody who represents Wigan Athletic, no matter what – it is what supporters do!!!!

Last week we did not try!!!! and I’m sorry but that is not acceptable.
Have I missed something or are we really Man Utd fo ok me some of our alledged support need to stop thinking we are a big club
No one is saying we are a big club. Just not 4 goals worse than a half decent championship side, with a player we let go 5+ years back, an overweight unwanted forward in Harewood, and a manager who clearly has mental issues.
Arsenal smashed Blackpool today at a canter. The only other game Blackpool will win is their home fixture against us unless Martinez is replaced quickly. However, some of the clubs fans are happy that we are awful on the pitch, but bobby is ace at stabding in that technical area, wishing the clock down for a goaless draw from the first whistle.
And to think, some ‘pundits’ had him down in the same bracket as moreno after the Villa result last season.

The same pundits I assume had England to win the world cup and that Aresnal team as more talent than the Wigan team ,time for a defensive coach

However you dress it up, Martinez is FACTUALLY our worst ever premierleague manager. Hutchins was sacked for far less (some would point out it was because he had a backbone and stood up to the fuhrer)
Give him time not just two games ffs
How much time? Would 3 No consecutive 4 Nil (+) be enough? Or 14 losses on the bounce? Or zero points at the end of the season? Just wondering where you personally would draw the line – i thought he should have gone last season.
