I reckon…….Figs,Ramis, Alcaraz,Di Santo,Macarthy,Kone,Maloney, plus all the loanees, would probably be more if Martinez goes as well.
Thats the backbone of the first team, so depending on new signings, it doesn’t look too easy to get promoted at first attempt.

I think it’s a certainty that all the out of contract players will leave so that gives us a starting list of Figueroa, Alcaraz & Di Santo plus fringe/unwanted players like Boselli, Stam & Jones
I also read the other week that Golobart is out of contract & wants out due to a lack of opportunities. Might be true, might not be.
Then like you say the loanees will go back so there’s Scharner, Robles & Henriquez

So I have as a bare minimum 9 players going & possibly 10

Of the in-contract players I think McCarthy is a cert to be sold if only to raise some cash for new signings.
I also doubt Kone will wanna hang around as he has whinged at several points about it being unusual for him to be involevd in a relegation battle. Plus they’ll be plenty of clubs wanting to sign a bloke that got 12 league goals in a relegated side
Ramis I think would want to go but I’m not sure how many clubs will wanna go in for a bloke currently sidelined with a cruciate knee ligament damage

So that now gives us 11-13 going

I think who else would wanna leave depends on Bobby’s decision to stay or not.
If Bobby stays I think Maloney, McArthur & McManaman would elect to stay for at least another season. If Bobby goes I can see them being open to offers from top flight clubs & if Bobby goes to Everton I think that it’s a cert that he’ll come back for Maloney (& McCarthy).

So by my estimates I think Latics are looking at having to bring in anything from 11-16 players over the summer just to replace those who are likely to be going.
That’s a big ask combined with expecting em to hit the ground running & mount a promotion bid. The teams who are successful in coming back up (or at least mounting a challenge) are generally the ones who keep their squads together.
If Bobby does decide to go & the numbers needing to be replaced are at the higher end of my figures then the 2 combined are gonna make it very difficult to attract the quality of player needed to be pushing for promotion. 3 away games at some as yet unknown & possibly far flung European destination is unlikely to be able to mask a general impression of a club with everybody abandoning ship & one which is unlikely to be able to match the wages paid by the likes of Leicester, Forest, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Bolton etc.. in a stadium that is likely to be less than half empty for most of the time.

It’s gonna be tough, very tough. Looking forward to it already (depsite being absolutely gutted by our relegation) but I’m certainly not expecting the stroll in the park that some seem to be

both Maloney and McCarthy in contracts,so can you see no money everton having the cash for them ,as well as paying compo for Martinez.also Martinez wages will have to improve.if Swansea are wanting 10 mil compo for laudrup ,we can at least expect 6 mil for the man they want so bad.so all in all they would need to cough up ,Maloney 5 mil, mccarthy 10 mil plus 6 mil Martinez, total 21 mil, somehow I don’t think so.

        Martinez has built up a group of Spanish speaking players who are likely to slip away if Martinez goes;

        Robles
        Alcaraz
        Crusat
        Gomez
        Ramis
        Beausejour
        Golobart
        Campabadal
        Figueroa

And there’s goalkeeping coach Iñaki Bergara too. Espinoza also speaks Spanish, but grew up in America and is now a US citizen.

“No Money” Everton is somewhat of a myth. I read last week that during Moyes time in charge at Everton they are the 8th biggest spending club in the country – hardly the actions of a club with no money.

Regardless, I think the fee Latics would be likely to get for Maloney would be well within their reach if they can spend £4.5mill on Pienaar.
McCarthy admittedly may be out of their reach but he is hardly goign to be short of suitors
Laudrup probably has a compensation fee written into his contract, I doubt very much (from what is said about his & Whelan’s relationship) that Martinez does, so the chances of Latics being able to say they wanted £6mill for him are non-existant – not forgetting Whelan’s quotes that if he says he wants to go he would let him go
McCarthy will definitely leave, Bobby may leave & I think Maloney will go if Bobby does
Even if them 3 don’t you are still looking at one hell of a rebuilding task for next season if just the out of contract players go (& Whelan has already says he’s pretty sure they will) not to mention the 6 players on top of the current squad numbers that both Bobby & Whelan say the club needs next season

The bigger concern is that they will leave the whole exercise until a couple of days before, or after the first game, then find that loads of players are sold quickly and not be able to react quick enough to get decent level championship players in. Thereby the first half of the season being like our usual first premier league halves of the season.

Past evidence suggest they wait to see what happens with players potentially on their way out rather than having a strategy to replace, let go, retain etc.

Unfortunate as it is, they need to draw up a list this weekend of those to actually put on the list, those to retain, those to release and those to acquire. And stick to it. They can’t just hope it all pans out. And Caldwell has to go for sure. But will no doubt be given the arm band for another year if decisions aren’t made early enough.

net spend for everton in 10yrs is 22 mil,2.2 per season.biggest signing 15 mil fellaini.martinez will have to do a lot of weeling n dealing,if he goes there,or he will have nothing to spend.have heard all the new tv money at everton is going on paying off most of debts.then he will have to introduce his style of football, therefore letting a bag full of goals in early on in the season.will not last at everton.

Alcaraz Figs and di Santo have all indicated they won’t renew contract so no chance now we have gone down. Joel and scharner will return to parent clubs.

McCarthy has served his time with us and would have gone anyway in summer.

Kone I understand has a release clause and pretty sure that will be met as seems good value, though if he stayed reckon we would score a shedload and lead us to promotion.

Maloney and mcmanaman I think will be happy to stay, though if club receives big offers they will be sold.

Clearly majority of these players are defenders and forwards and so major strengthening will be needed in these areas. However don’t forget in championship we are allowed a lot more loan signings and given clubs reputation on playing style and nurturing players we should be first in line for any top quality loanees from parent clubs.

Whilst McCarthy fee should be used for reinvestment I also think a good chunk should be for massive incentive bonuses if we get back up for those players we want to keep like kone, Maloney etc. the players we have left in squad are all more than good enough for championship and supplemented with new signings and loan players even with above departures we should have a very good and competitive squad. Of course who stays, goes and who comes in will be influenced by who is in charge and yes plans need putting in place immediately.

Of course they have a strategy. Money and players jumping at the chance to play for Wigan Athletic are what they don’t have.

Players sign at the last minute because the club can only be sure they have the money for the deal when the outgoing player deal is done, and/or, some of the players we end up signing bide their time and weigh up their best option. When nothing better comes alone, they plump for us.

I think you’re getting too tied up in me mentioning Everton in my original post
From what I can gather Bobby is on the radars of a number of clubs across Europe. So forget about Everton & call it A.N. Other FC – if they were to entice Bobby away I think that would lead to more of the in-contract players itching to move away (McArthur, Maloney & McManaman) than would be the case if he were to stay.
I also think that it would have a major negative impact on Latics ability to entice players to the club. If you’re a player with a few new clubs to choose from you are unlikely to choose the one that has been freshly relegated & where 16 players & a manager have legged it from since the previous season’s end.

The job of getting promoted or even mounting a challenge is going to be hard enough but I think if Bobby does leave it is going to be nigh on impossible – for that reason I want him to stay. Not because I think he’s one of the best managers in Europe (copyright D Whelan) because I don’t but coz I fear the consequences of him leaving more than i fear (or look forward to – either works) the consequences of him staying

Whelan should put his foot down and demand that as the players got us relegated in the first place, the least they can do is stick around for a season and try and get us promoted at the first attempt. Should it go wrong then fair enough, they can leave. Same goes for Roberto.

Speculation is a pain in the arse !!!!

The out of contract defenders will I guess go and Di Santo – I’ll drive him to the airport myself to make sure !!!!

As for the rest I’m not so sure. A lot will depend on who’s in charge really.

If Martinez stays then I think the majority of them will to.Everyone is so sure McCarthy will go.Unless it’s a top 4 club why should he? He’ll get the experience playing of in Europe with us the experience would only enhance his value I’m sure.

                  Next season Wigan will play;

                  Community Shield 1 game
                  Championship 46 games
Europa League 6 games at least
League Cup 1 game at least
FA Cup 1 game at least
                  Total 55 games at least

Promotion must be Wigan’s priority. So far this season Chelsea have played 68 matches and used 26 players. In view of their much more modest resources, I just can’t see Wigan making the Europa League a priority.

Promotion has to be the priority and I’m sure it will be.

However if I was one of our better players thinking about staying I would want reassurance I would be playing in the European games as well.Otherwise what’s the point??

                    #113815

There is very little point to the European matches.

What can you remember about Bolton and Stoke playing in the UEFA Cup – and even Everton and Manchester City in the Champions League?

Do Wigan really want to qualify for the next round? They are likely to field weakened teams, just as they have in domestic cup ties.
