I can only agree with the above posts – the decision of Martinez will be key to the next 5 years for Wigan Athletic. If he goes, then it will be wholesale changes, but if he stays we have a really good chance of bouncing straight back as I think that we will retain the core of the team.

I’d like to think you are right, but Martinez being loyal to the club is one thing, but the players remaining loyal is quite another. I do agree that he is the key to whether certain players stay but some will be off regardless.
Whelan should put his foot down and demand that as the players got us relegated in the first place, the least they can do is stick around for a season and try and get us promoted at the first attempt. Should it go wrong then fair enough, they can leave. Same goes for Roberto.I completely agree.
If Bob is the decent, respectful bloke he pertains to be and has the best interests of the club at heart he would at least stick around for one season:
A – to make amends for getting us relegated
B – to lead us into Europe as he said he always wanted to
C – to finish the job off setting us up as a proper footballing club…if he goes there is a real danger that all the background work he’s done and the philosophy he’s introduced will just unravel
D – to make sure we don’t lose all our playersCould he really live with himself if he let the last 2 things happen? If he could then he’s basically spun us all a big fat one for the last 4 years.
If he does go, then I’d rather he fooked off to Malaga and not stay in the UK – that would take the pi55, esp. if he then tries to raid us for all our players. Can see us, like Swansea, getting the Judas banners out…but at least he left them in a strong position.
In my opinion I don’t think we’ll lose as many as we think, but that will depend on whether señor Martinez stays or not. Lets say he does stay, I can see him tempting quite a few with ‘give it until January’ routine. By which time those said players will know whether we are in with a chance of promotion and/or still in Europe or not. Whether we think Europe is a hindrance or not, these foreigners like playing in Europe, or so they seem to say when they come here. Of the ones we are suspecting/believing will go, here are my opinions if Martinez does indeed decide to stay:
Figueroa – off, prob to Hull
Alcaraz – stay (I for one haven’t seen him linked anywhere else)
Stam – released
Di Santo – released
Maloney – stay
McCarthy – stay
McArthur – stay
McManaman – stay
Kone – stayI have it on good authority that Uniteds Nick Powell is down for a season next year whilst I can prob see Joel coming back on loan. I have also heard that Martinez has offered to scrap the wage reduction for those who intend to be affected by relegation. All of the above does depend on whether he stays or goes though. So it is indeed a big if.
Add to those, some other hungry Championship/League1 players, then I don’t believe we’ll be that far off.
the latest interviews Iv’e seen Martinez give, his body language and the things he’s saying don’t give me any confidence that he plans on staying. If thats the case and he’s prepared to leave, then I can see the players he signed also wanting out,
