After beating Liverpool he said it would be something for the fans of WAFC to remember for the rest of their lives !! I have had some stick I can tell ya from various fans re that statement ! Mainly along the lines of ” Every fucker is beating Liverpool at the moment what’s the big deal ” Now to be fair it was a good result but Liverpool are a shadow of their former selves and not really a massive scalp any more. To me it just makes us look a smaller club than we actually are ! Take the away win at Bolton earlier on in season, someone came on here enquiring if it was on DVD !! Come on !! Get a grip !!

I see where you’re coming from filmoss but at the same time I can also see where Bobby is coming from too.

I know Latics have scalped some of the big uns in the past & I know in the here & now Liverpool aren’t the giants they once were & are only a few points in front of say Swansea BUT at the same time when you have a website like the BBC which in its match preview specifically highlighted the fact that during the season 20 odd years ago Latics drew the future league champions Liverpool in the League cup, had to play both legs at Anfield & got mullered 8-2 on aggregate (despite putting up a valiant show for the first hour) then it is both a significant milestone for the club & an indicator that (for all us darksiders may bitch & moan) the steps that this club has made over that period are huge

Obviously its also an indicator of the fact that Liverpool are no longer the powerhouses they once were.
Having relatives who are Mousers & working with loads of em, for me it is a moment I’ll savour & I’ll admit it did feel different (possibly better even) than beating say Fulham

Lets put it this way I am looking forward to playing Southampton in the league next season, the ONLY team WAFC have NEVER played in the league !! ;)
PS Now if we beat Utd that WILL be special !! Liverpool are poor these days so the win in a way pales into insignificance. Would the reaction still be the same if this milestone came in The Championship ? Like I said it makes us look like we are still a lower league team which incidentally we are NOT ! ;)

Phil, as has been said before, why listen to what the manager says in pre or post match interviews if it’s going to wind you up?

It’s rehearsed, predictable, and isn’t just aimed at Phil in Leyland or Jonny in Standish. How many times have you heard Dalglish, Ferguson or Wenger talking biased rubbish? Only the gullible take it in word for word.

What do you expect him to say ‘It’s not really a great achievement as Liverpool aren’t that good these days’?

What a massive confidence boost that would be to everyone….

Latics men of long-standing will have dreamt of going to Anfield in a league match on a level playing field and winning. Regardless of how goodbad Liverpool happen to be this month the symbolism of the first ever league win away at Liverpool is huge, and therefore it is a historic result. I’d say Bob has captured the mood of most fans perfetcly well.

As I have said on another thread, however – it will count for nothing if we fail against Stoke.

The same people who see winning at Anfield as an historic moment most likely have a calm view to that of relegation.

Old school or maybe just schooled in general….

I’m not old enough to remember the glory days of Liverpool but alot of people on here would of been around when they were today’s equivalent of Man U.

And if we beat Man U at the DW I will have a plaque placed on my forhead to celebrate the historic moment in which we beat one of the best teams in the world!

But as the alarm clocks off I think we will get our arses torn by them….

I will always have a soft spot for Valencia but putting that aside the way he has been playing this season is immense… so I hope he doesnt play as I think he will fly plast Booser / Figger and cause us all sorts of problems.

All in all it just makes the Stoke game that much more important.

So taking into account the people who have been coming on this board saying the team give them nothing to cheer about you’ve got your win at Anfield so get behind the team and one of the best young managers in europe.

As far as I’m aware Latics have never played in the league (as in the football or premier league) against Morecamble, AFC Wimbledon, Crawley, Yeovil, Dagenham & Redbridge, Stevenage, Sheffield Wednesday, (the reformed) Aldershot, Accrington or Burton Albion.
As well as Southampton of course ;)

Salford every post you do you state Bob is one of the best young managers in Europe. What the fook do you base that on??? his record since he became our manager is an absolute disgrace. I struggle to think of any other Premiership club who would have put up with his results and still employ him.

So please pack it in because it’s bollocks.

Now then Tyldesley you’re pretty accurate when it comes to this kind of thing but I’ll have to correct you on one of those. We played Aldershot in the 1981-82 season, the season we got promoted to the old 3rd division under Larry Lloyd. The reason I know this is because the club chartered a special train for the away match and a good few made the trip, including myself. It was the last match of the season and the week before we’d clinched promotion by beating Mansfield at home. The game was poor though and we lost 2-0. The journey back took forever. It’s was like I’d been on that train for my whole life.

Just noticed you’d put “reformed” Aldershot so apologies.

Well done Salford, only took a couple of days baiting there to catch a huge whopper!

Surprised Hindley, very surprised at you falling for that ;)

Good points !! I am way behind with my stat by about 9 years and a club !! I believe all the clubs bar Sheff Wed are relatively new to the football league Yeovil being the longest ( 2003 ) We were way above by that time ( Championship ) and not likely to meet them ! Sheff Wed on the other hand should be included with Southampton as teams we have never played if we were to conveniently go back 10 seasons !! :)
