I meant on sky, who are the company currently under-paying for what is quite a popular product. Free TV will always attract more viewers. Based on that theory, women’s football is more popular than Championship Football, where the viewing figures are less than 500,000. Very few premiership games get over 1 million viewers.
The actual breakdown is only available via subscription, but FYI, the Superbowl was watched by 173,000 on Sky Sports, with the next best being 125000 for a divisional play-off. I cant be bothered to find the other sports.
The only way you’ll win this one is hard evidence mate.
Lets say get the viewing figures for the Superbowl, First day of the first Ashes test, Grand Final, Playoff final and 3rd Lions test.
If you can’t be bothered looking then by all means PM me your details and I’ll look. I’ve seen the stats for RL before so I know you aren’t lying.

That’s one spin you can put on it, or the other side of the argument is that it’s RL’s biggest game of the season and an international RL game would probably attract a similar figure if not less.
With regards to the Heineken Cup, I’d guess that it got such a low figure this year due to there being no British or Irish interest in it.
The previous season featured two Irish clubs and 309k watched it, and the year before that Northampton were in the final and 400k watched it.
Of if you look at terrestrial channels, 1.2M watched this year’s Challenge Cup Final, as opposed to an average of 4.5M for the Six Nations matches.
Super League is actually the 6th most watched of the sports regularly featured on Sky Sports – behind Football, Cricket, Rugby Union, F1, and Super League Darts.
That’s still a decent achievement though as we’ve already established that the fanbase is largely based around the M62 – and that’s where those running the game should focus their attentions.
We’ll I will watch club RL if it’s on and I happen to be in…..and not otherwise occupied (I watched and enjoyed the Wigan G Final win) whereas you couldn’t pay me to watch Saracens and London Irish whatever……. The strange thing is my opinions are reversed when it comes to the International games of both codes …..captivated by 6 nations and Lions games but I doubt I’ll pay much attention to the forthcoming RL World Cup.
RL has been a ‘Stock item’ on Sky Sports pretty much from the off but it’s precisely because they could buy it relatively cheap and that they effectively forced it into the Spring/Summer slots that they’ve maintained it.
If Lenegan (smart guy that he is to be fair) thinks they can screw more out of em then good luck, but they need to be careful not to overplay their hand.
