Is it just me or is the coverage of Latics in the local papers in Wigan just awful?
I only see the online version normally and sometimes catch a copy of the paper when I’m up for games, but honestly the stories they do are just garbage.
There’s a story online today where they’ve just copied and pasted a story from the official website about the international call-ups and even that is wrong because N’Zogbia isn’t playing for France this weekend.
There is never reporting from inside the club or exclusives on transfer targets yet they are the local paper and this is what they should be doing.
For example, I’ve put on a few posts about this saga with the Spanish defender who has gone missing in Wigan, which is a cracking tale. It’s got the Spanish media all over it, with the latest twist being that they tracked him down to the Wrightingdon but he wouldn’t comment on what was going on.
Why isn’t the local paper covering this story? I’m sure it won’t be long before one of the nationals picks up on it.
Having been a journalist myself maybe I’m being too harsh on them because I know only too well about the cutbacks in the local press, but I’ve only been following this story doing Google searches and using translators on the web, it takes seconds.
i stopped buying them many years ago when I got fed up with them (the WEP in particular) running hooligan scare stories on a regular basis before England games & tournaments and using the fact that a tiny minority of Latics fans had banning orders to link it into some local angle condemning Latics fans
On their Latics coverage as a whole its a million times better than it used to be in our lower league days when you could go for days, during the course of a season, without seeing any Latics related stories in the WEP
As for the ongoing story about Lopez, maybe the local press have got hold of it & have contacted Latics but Latics have requested they don’t run the story as (from what I can understand of the translated stories that have popped up on here) his current/previous club are querying the footballing legality of him being anywhere on trial or otherwise with any other club except them
I take your point about the Lopez story, but it doesn’t stop them running a ‘mystery surrounds’ story and then getting a comment from the club saying “no comment”. Or they could run something from the club saying, ‘he’s not training with us until he’s sorted out his contract dispute’ as every man and his dog knows he’s in Wigan.
If they are ignoring the story it just goes to show they are happy to tow the line with the club, and be happy to accept reporting on old news that has appeared on the official website.
I just think it’s a shame that a story which fans are talking about and speculating about is not being covered by the local paper.

The Wigan papers have caused all the anomosity between the football and the Rugby Supporters over the years
i rember that rent boy lindsey, saying the rugby should be on the back of the evening post
and the latics hidden away inside somewhere
the fkn queer ,shit shuvler.
one of the main reasons, is all the main editorial staff for the post are preston based, in essence its a preston newspaper that includes a wigan version as a reminder of the old wigan evening post and chronicle.
there is better rugby coverage because peter aspinall, who is a worrier fan , pushes their cause as best he can -the evening posts owners lancashire newspapers group also owns and produces a number of rugby league based publications, which aspinall is a senior member of the editorial team so rugby has a much greater representation within the group,
the main reason that the latics coverage is slightly better in the observer is that paper still retain some editorial influence within wigan unlike the post.
in truth the post is a nob end / worrier paper and they also probably know that its circulation is very low among latics fans-so they dont do anything about it.
I remember when i was a kid waiting for The Post & Chronicle `Pink` at Trevor Peacocks on a Saturday night to see how we` went on` at Workington,Netherfield,Gainsborough etc…………

Couldn’t agree more, have noticed before now in the letters section, a really controversial letter in favour of one club always has “name and address supplied”….to me thats employee told to right something, cos they need to fill some space in a later edition so start something controversial and get geniune people writing in.
