Will our new manager be able to work on a budget like Roberto has for the last 4 yrs.
I doubt the likes of Ferguson,Moyes or any one else for that matter could have coped with the same restraints put on them as Roberto had.
I really am concerned that Whelan is the reason that Roberto has left, I think he was being asked to carry on without much financial support and without being able to bring in many new faces.
I hope I am wrong but things don’t seem right to me, it will be interesting to see how many new faces are brought in , bearing in mind we will be playing over 50 games this year.
We also will need some quality not just quantity.
      I live in hope

Martinez hasn’t been starved of money. Boselli £4million, Crusat £2 million Scotland £2 million, That’s £8 million pounds wasted for astart

Yes but what was Martinez’s net spend compared to the other previous Wigan managers (let alone the other Premier League managers)?

Paul Jewell’s net spend was £17.2 million, and his wage bill was £24.5 million
Steve Bruce’s net spend was £17.4 million, and his wage bill was £37.7 million
Up to last year, Roberto Martinez’s net spend was £1.4 million, and his wage bill was £35.7 million

So, he had 8% of what the other manager had to spend, plus he had reduced the wage bill

These figure give a false impression, as some of the Big transfer fees received during Martinez’s tenure were for players that were here when he came i.e. Catermole, Valencia, N’Zogbia, I aint saying all his signings were bad ones but some of them cost a lot of money for not much talent.
Made a mistake Boselli’s fee was around 6.5 million… After he was advised that he was no good by John Benson. Hence John’s departure to Sunderland. add to the list Di Santo. £2 million

          #115084

How do they give a false impression? The only way Martinez got himself a transfer kitty was by first selling some of his squad.

Yes, Bosselli was a mistake (as were Marlon King £4m, Jason Koumas £5.3m, Julius Aghahowa £2.5m, David Connolly £2m etc signed by previous managers)

I’m not disputing who signed who. I’m outlining the fact that Martinez had less budget than his predecessors.

To quote the article the figures are taken from:

‘To quickly summarize the activity of the three, Paul Jewell entered the Premier League with a small squad on low wages. He was able to invest substantially in both transfer fees and wages. Steve Bruce, while given a larger net spend, had liberty to increase the wage bill. Roberto Martinez has presided over the lowest net spend as well as a shrinking wage budget while also expanding the squad.’

Judging on last years F.A Cup performances, This squad is easily good enough to walk The Championship. It’s time we looked forward. Balls to Judas.

There you go again, talking sense and quouting independent and neutral sources to back you up. Cut it out, it’ll never wash.

I can just picture our rounders-loving friend and his mates with their fingers jammed in their ears going “la-la-la-la-la-la… can’t hear you!”

Judging by last year’s Premier League performances, we’ll need a bigger squad with better cover in defence and attack.

We’ll have more league matches next season with the European games on top of them. But there’s no guarantee that we’ll go into the season with the current squad intact.

I’m grateful to Martinez for everything he did. Some of the crowd abused him while he was here. You’ve got your way – why would you abuse him now he’s gone?

You do realise how many defenders were injured at one stage last season we had Watson playing CB things were that desperate which resulted in bringing back Scharner to help out as for attack we scored more goals than the previous three seasons it was the defensive injury crisis that cost us most games I would like to see a stat that shows how many differant combinations were used during last season

I have never heard RM getting any abuse on a match day, never ! Personally I think he led a fairly charmed life with the fans through the winless periods !

Exactly. He can’t be blamed for the injury crisis we suffered.

I really am concerned that Whelan is the reason that Roberto has left, I think he was being asked to carry on without much financial support and without being able to bring in many new faces.

That is is a fair point if you are to read between the lines of Whelan’s statement on Martinez asking to leave.

Without being a fly on the wall we will never know but for speculations sake and depending on which way you look at it then it could be seen as a case of either :

a.) Whelan being “tight” and only offering a budget that Roberto feels is inadequate to put us in the strongest reasonable position to go straight back up.

b.) Roberto asking for investment outside of the clubs finances to cover the large amount of transfers needed to cope with the amount of games we have next season.

Personally I don’t think Whelan takes a large amount from the club in terms of salary a for the job he does but then again I wouldn’t blame him if he did compensate himself in this manner for the work and investment he has obviously done for the club over the years and continues to do.

So again reading between the lines I think Roberto has possibly thought if I am going to stay I want to compete in Europe, FA CUP, and the league while keeping up the standards of our football from last season (obviously a point of opinion if this would be good enough to win the championship) which when you think of the amount of players actually needed between now and the start of the season is it going to be a massive task without competitive budgets to those around us.

If you take a look at some of the owners estimated wealth compared to Whelan it really does paint a picture of what we will always be up against as a club in or outside the Premier league.

Wigan Athletic – Dave Whelan £190m

                      QPR – Tony Fernandes 66% stake £208m – Lakshmi Mittal 33% stake £11,800m
                      Reading – Anton Zingarevich 51% stake £3,460m – Sir John Madejski 48% stake £175m
Nottingham Forest – Kuwait The Al Hasawi Family £2,200m
                      Ipswich – Marcus Evans £625m
Bristol City – Stephen Lansdown £557m
Blackburn Rovers – alaji & Venkatesh Rao £500m

Obviously none of us are in the know as to the clubs exact finances but if you consider we will get £24 million next season as a parachute payment (dont know if that is the figure) instead of roughly £60 million last season from Sky that leaves us running at a loss of £36 million before a penny is spent or a season tickets is not bought and I can take a punt at the fact the wage bill wont be decreasing anywhere near £692,000 per week to cover that loss.

When Roberto has said he doesn’t feel he would be equipped to take us back up he may possibly have a point.
