Cracking day and heroic effort today – no shame in taking arrogant Arsenal all the way to penalties – but could it have been a very different story?
Wrong starting line up?
Wrong substitutions?
Wrong penalty shoot out strategy?13 April 2014 at 2:54 am #129814Hardly the wrong starting line up… We were 8 mins from victory
Wrong subs… Taking Callum off was a strange one but we will never know
Wrong line up in the pens… Again who knows .. Hindsight a wonderful thingI have a massive issue with Powell though he really is p1sing me off plays for himself, that shot from 40yds summed him up, he’s got more big headed as the season goes on but where was he when we needed a pen taker.
Anyway sure the boo boys will take the easy option of blaming Caldwell, at least he had the bollox for it.
And as for Gomez bollox after two misses .. Top mon!!
Overall a fantastic effort
13 April 2014 at 3:06 am #129815Gomez after missing his last two penalties ,It took some balls to take that in front of 80 odd thousand especially with it being delayed due to injury and Crainy was top drawer today
13 April 2014 at 3:22 am #129816Best game I’ve seen from Crainey. – MOM for me.
Not sure I’d have started McEachran or Fortune over Maloney or Powell. And certainly wouldn’t have used Collinson as a sub over Maloney or Caldwell over Barnett. Powell was pants though. Our dip in form has coincided with his return to the team.
For the penalties, you’ve got to send in your best takers first. Jordi should have been #1 to get us off the mark. And never in a million years would I have sent in Caldwell first.
Anyway, now that the distraction is out of the way we can concentrate on getting promoted!
13 April 2014 at 4:41 am #129817Not the team I would have gone with but the performance was superb.
I also would have made different changes but again the performance was superb.
I imagine the penalty takers opted to take one as opposed to Rosler telling them too. The body language after the misses changed and I think we knew we’d lost. Was it just me or was Fabiansli a mile off his line for the 2nd?
Excellent cup run and performance. So so proud.
13 April 2014 at 6:59 am #129820We won the cup for 80 minutes so it was a great starting line up
Subs were fine but Nick made one wrong decision. He is only young and in years to come we will be so chuffed that he played for us for a short while
Caldwell is our leader and he hit a penalty that was saved. Keeper guessed right
Crainey man of match in a team performance that was immense. We were playing one of the best teams in Europe
Shame their fans aren’t as classy

Do me a favour … may like to think he is. We’ve done fine without (Cup Final last year as well). Why he came on in favour of Barnet, one of more consistent and better performers this season, God only knows.
Penalty strategy wrong (we didn’t even practice, as UR said … probably didn’t even have the sequence worked out until extra time. Score first, and pressure on Arsenal (Wenger – must win – and the Arsenal folk were sh1tting themselves after 80 inns ! Pressure !
Real shame, our penalty taking technique a real damp squib after our heroic 120 minute performance.
As stated before, we need to be aware of the dreaded pens in the play-offs.
Carson was very good in goal today, but had we had our best 11 out for the pens, (all) might have been a different story ….. Ali, Maloney etc.
as for Gary, less of the leader stuff’, too many feckin’ calamities in recent times. And get Barnett back !
Revenge against the Cockneys in the play-offs !
13 April 2014 at 11:00 am #129822right, wrong, wrong. Thats how I saw it.
Superb defensive effort and what about the performances of crainey, fortune, macarthur and gomez.
Arsenal guys I met before and after game were great, but in the stady were crap..never sung til they had won it.
13 April 2014 at 12:54 pm #129823Caldwell came on over Barnett as Barnett is a left sided centre back whilst Caldwell more suited for the sweeper role. Did arsenal score whilst he was on? Therefore correct sub in my view.
Also Barnett since his injury has had a few wobbly games hasn’t he… The bigger issue could be how long we lose ramis for though?
13 April 2014 at 1:16 pm #129824Team selection and tactics were spot on IMHO – to make Arsenal look pretty ordinary for 120 mins is no mean feat.
Wigan may have lost yesterday and the outstanding defence of the cup is over, but the experience of big matches and playing at Wembley four times in 12 months will give you a huge advantage come play-off time. As long as you stay in the play-off places, you are nailed on for a return to the premiership.
Well done yesterday – again you made Wigan proud of you.
13 April 2014 at 3:09 pm #129826Ok what have you done with Mutty? You imposter, the real Mutty would never stoop so low as to say such nice things about Wigan Athletic
13 April 2014 at 4:22 pm #129831I think Maloney late in ET would have been the 3rd sub if it wasn’t for the Ramis injury.
13 April 2014 at 5:11 pm #129834Just got home as we stayed over near Luton.
Still buzzing from the whole thing really, despite the penalty shoot out.
We really were sooo close to winning it!!
We were queued up for a while getting back into Wembley Park station, lots of Arsenal fans around, plenty of comments like “that’s the best team outside the Prem”, “better than a lot of Prem teams” “very organised”…etc
They couldn’t beat us in 120 min of open play. Top effort yesterday. Carry on like that we will be back in May and winning the play offs :cheer:

Wrong substitutions?
Wrong penalty shoot out strategy?Wrong starting lineup? Pretty much alright except for McEachran. Just not good enough.
Wrong subs? If McManaman was injured or cramped, fair enough. If he wasn’t, it was a poor move to take him off. Bringing Caldwell on instead of Barnett was a bit of an eyebrow raiser but not as much as….
….Wrong Penalties Strategy? Definitely. I saw the highlights back in the hotel room and Rosler sarcastically/tongue-in-cheek said something about not needing to practice penalties as ‘we’re German’. For a manager that comes across as a true disciplinarian and meticulous to the nth degree, he dropped the ball in his penalties strategy. He must’ve realised that it was a possibility and should have prepared for it accordingly. I don’t believe in this bullshit about ‘who’s brave enough to take one’. If Rosler did ask for volunteers, that would be sloppy. If he brought Caldwell on in anticipation of penalties then his strategy can only be classed as mind-boggling.
13 April 2014 at 5:54 pm #129837Practising penalties is of limited value as you can never recreate the pressure environment of a real situation. As a manager you have to see who’s up for taking one, that’s far more important than who takes them best on the training ground if their bottle’s gone. All our penalties were on target which is the first requirement, if the keeper had guessed wrong we’d have scored all 4 too. These things happen, move on.
