I have moved on, I did that about five minutes after it was all over, I just think it was weird. I’m not talking about practicing penalties here. Gomez should’ve taken the first one. I don’t believe for a minute that he wouldn’t have been up for it. That means the strategy was questionable at best.

I reckon it’s down to the keeper guessing right at the end of day and that’s what the Arsenal keeper himself has admitted to.
The penalties were on target and their keeper guessed right, Scott Carson didn’t guess right so their penalties went in.
One other thing that yesterday did prove to me was that Scott Carson is still one of the best English goalkeepers, and would be pressing for a World Cup spot if he had been playing more regularly. I personally prefer him than Ali Al Habsi.

Gomez after missing his last two penalties ,It took some balls to take that in front of 80 odd thousand especially with it being delayed due to injury and Crainy was top drawer today

Gomez was the best player on the field yesterday, including all of Arsenals multi million pound players.

I thought Stephen Crainey pushed him all the way and it was a toss up between the two of them for Man of the Match.

I think Carson is technically a better ‘keeper but not as good a shot stopper as Al Habsi. When it got to penalties I think we would have fared better had Ali been there. Fabianski IS a good shot stopper.
Regarding bringing Caldwell on rather than Barnett I also thought it strange. Maybe Barnet is still carrying an injury. Caldwell did the right thing by taking responsibility for the first pen. Had that gone in the story could well have been different.

Just got back myself. We stayed in Woking and had a great journey back on the train after the game thanx to a bunch of Portsmouth fans. One gave me a beer and 2 tried to chat up my daughter. :cheer:

Nicer bunch than the smug gits who support Arsenal – no class at all. Bunch of tossers.

As for the game.Crainey was brilliant. Gomez so cool under pressure and a great penalty.

We didn’t lose the match in my eyes,we lost the lottery that came after it.

I presume Caldwell volunteered to take pen 1 so at least he showed some bottle !!!

My only gripe was Powell for Callum.Should have sent Maloney on as he’s also capable of holding the ball and beating a man.Plus he’s a penalty taker. Powell was awful and contributed little.

              Friday is more important anyway.

              Onwards and upwards !!!!! B)

Cracking day and heroic effort today – no shame in taking arrogant Arsenal all the way to penalties – but could it have been a very different story?

              Wrong starting line up?
              Wrong substitutions?
              Wrong penalty shoot out strategy?

              Wrong manager! Rosler must go!

In the starting line up, I thought that the balance between defence and attack was correct. Rosler might have preferred Watson or McCann – if either had been available. I was surprised – but not concerned – to see Carson was playing. I thought Rosler might have gone for 3-5-2.

Powell for McManaman seemed a fair exchange. Powell didn’t get much service or support. I was surprised to see Caldwell appear – but he played his part. I was quite happy to go into extra time with that eleven.

The goalkeeper saved two Wigan penalties – well done Fabianski.

We matched Arsenal – well done, lads. We can concentrate on the league now. I hope Ramis isn’t seriously injured, but we can add Maloney and Caldwell to the squad.

Was surprised that Mcechran started, was very surprised to see Callum come off? he was our only real threat and he had Arsenal bothered. Penalties are a lottery and we just had no luck!
Walking out after the match I actually had two Arsenal fans apologise to me for beating us? They said they were lucky and that we didn’t deserve to lose! They, along with me thought we were great.
Gutted we lost, and I’m pretty sure no one more than Uwe will know where / if he went wrong.

So proud of the lads yesterday. Would have bought Barnett on for Caldwell and thought Maloney rather than Powell might have been the better change at that point. As for the Caldwell taking the first one, surprised at that, but its a lottery, so who can say Jordi takes the first one and scores?

All in all, we were 8 mins (plus injury time) from getting to the final as cup holders, suggests that we did things pretty well, until that split-second when Mertersacker gets free and equalises.

Just another great day in the history of our amazing little club, this one didn’t quite work out…but what a ride its been getting there and maybe more to come under Uwe.

Thanks for making us Believe…..proud to be Wigan Athletic FC

Obviously the keeper has to go the right way. He can go the right way and still be beaten though if the penalty has enough power and is placed well. See the Gomez penalty for example.

The first two penalties were terrible penalties simple as that.

Having seen the Collison pen again BTW I still think Fabianski moves off his line before he’s taken it.

Here’s my video taken from Block 501, row 18…

Play it frame by frame. Fabianski’s left foot is nearly 2 yards off the line when the ball is struck. How did Oliver not spot that?

We won the cup for 80 minutes so it was a great starting line up

Subs were fine but Nick made one wrong decision. He is only young and in years to come we will be so chuffed that he played for us for a short while

Caldwell is our leader and he hit a penalty that was saved. Keeper guessed right

Crainey man of match in a team performance that was immense. We were playing one of the best teams in Europe

Shame their fans aren’t as classy

Hit it at a nice height and no power ,keeper was almost embarrassed to save it.

As well as Carson played in the match his penalty saving technique was awful. He commits far too early making it easy for the opposition. Reminded me of Shilton in Italia 90. Ali has so much more spring and when you think how many he has saved could have made the difference.
