You know what I find depressing about our curent predicament? Watching Match Of The Day and seeing the likes of Victor Moses, Antonio Valencia. Lee Cattermole, Leighton Baines, Jordi Gomez, Figoera , Diame, McArthy and McArthur every week. I don’t begrudge the players wanting to play at the highest level; I just can’t help wondering what happened to the £100million-plus received in transfer money for them. That’s on top of eight years’ worth of Sky TV money. The board has gone from spending £10million in the summer to preparing for League 1, paying League 1 transfer fees and League 1 wages. It’s almost like Whelan has seen that Ray Winstone ad on the telly and decided that at half-time in the season, it was time to cash out. He can take plenty of credit for our rise but now must accept responsibility for our fall. Not only has he made a string of bad appointments, he’s presided over the squandering of hundreds of millions in cash that could have kept the club sustainable for years to come.

From a football perspective martin i fully understand where you are coming from. However it is only football. What i find depressing is the fact that i have no idea what is going to be happening with regards my job in the next 6 – 12 months – a profession i have worked in for 23 years with some people suffering from severe depression. It is also a job i once considered to be a safe one. & with a family to support, mortgage to pay etc, etc.. that is what i find depressing.

Things might not be so great at the moment, but thats the way football goes sometimes. Yes its not good at the moment, but to use the word depressing is perhaps too strong a term IMHO.

Yeah, you’re right: it was a bad choice of word. Best of luck trying to keep it together. It’s a shame so many vital services are at the sharp end, especially when there’s £30billion a year in unpaid tax which could be going towards them. Football is completely trivial in comparison, but some good news on the field wouldn’t go amiss. Seems a long time since Wembkey and Europe already.

30 billion less for overpaid and underworked civil servants and principal officers in local authorities to squander.
They will always be there on their 30-100 grand plus a year super salaries while they cut back on cleaners, porters and labourers on 12 to 15k a year jobs.

Sorry martin. Not really having a go at you & apologies if it came across that way, but whilst im far from happy at the state of things on the pitch at the moment, im far from depressed. Its as i say, its the way football goes sometimes. We’ve had 17 years of good times – starting from our promotion back in 1997 right up to the FA cup final of 2 years ago plus a stint in europe. Now we are experiencing the bad times. Yes i blame whelan for his appointment of “cheaper” coyle. But i will stick by this club no matter what. Ive watched ’em on the way up, i’ll watch ’em on the way down if need be – which i hope don’t happen.

Well best of luck Runcorn. Hope things work out for you and Latics can pick up for a bit of extra feel good factor.

A big chunk in wages out of that lot Martin the wage bill was I think 90% of income over the Prem years I even recall one season we had income of £52 million and still made a loss on that season

But that boils down to mismanagement again. We know for a fact that Burnley have refused to dish out those sorts of contracts. Yet they’ve got a fighting chance of winning next year’s telly windfall. I suspect also that Crystal Palace and Hull are paying out smaller wages these days, having been relegated relatively recently.

The cost-cutting started when Martinez took over from Bruce: by the time he left I’d be surprised if we had anyone left on over 20K a week, when Heskey, N’Zogbia and others were on much more than that years before.

Now the players have gone, the money’s been squandered, the extra support has been lost, and we still haven’t got the academy off the ground.

Whelan talks a lot about putting the club on a safe financial footing. Looks like he’s just putting us back where he found us.

I am pretty sure that Martin meant to say ‘Pissed Off’ ! Well that’s how I feel and just as ‘Blueneon’ has mentioned, the speed of this collapse certainly is an eye opener yet there is still a strange sort of acceptance from the fans? No voices or banners on match days? I am thinking of making a banner with ‘We Want Answers’ written on it or something similar because the silence from the club is uncanny as well! It’s like ” Thanks for your money but fuck you” !

Instead of poncing about making a banner, and going all Citizen Smith, why not take a few minutes to read the accounts?* There’s a section in there entitled “Money I have simply pissed up the wall for no good reason, by Dave Whelan”. It has easy to understand pictures to help those “who have been telling us for seven years” see how daft they are.

*Or even reading the recent interview in the Obby in which Jonathan Jackson explained the rational behind what is going on at the club. But no, it’s much easier to snipe from a position of ignorant assumption because the facts simply don’t, and never have, backed it up.
