Whelan can not take from the club if the club has nothing for him to take or what we have is Whelans anyway because the club is his club. He could pay himself back by moving money around, but paying back is only paying himself or his other businesses back what he has put in in the first place. Yes Dave says he has put in 100 million but he still manages to appear in the Sunday Times Rich List every year and also owns a Stadium, Training ground with valuable land and a huge tranche of land in Charnock Richard. On paper we look like we are a wealthy club, with small debts, a stadium, training ground and land for a new complex but are these Latics assets or Daves assets or Daves assets because Dave is Wigan Athletic?

I am pretty sure that Martin meant to say ‘Pissed Off’ ! Well that’s how I feel and just as ‘Blueneon’ has mentioned, the speed of this collapse certainly is an eye opener yet there is still a strange sort of acceptance from the fans? No voices or banners on match days? I am thinking of making a banner with ‘We Want Answers’ written on it or something similar because the silence from the club is uncanny as well! It’s like ” Thanks for your money but fuck you” !

Instead of poncing about making a banner, and going all Citizen Smith, why not take a few minutes to read the accounts?* There’s a section in there entitled “Money I have simply pissed up the wall for no good reason, by Dave Whelan”. It has easy to understand pictures to help those “who have been telling us for seven years” see how daft they are.

*Or even reading the recent interview in the Obby in which Jonathan Jackson explained the rational behind what is going on at the club. But no, it’s much easier to snipe from a position of ignorant assumption because the facts simply don’t, and never have, backed it up.[/quote]

Is that the guy who said that Wigan Athletic were the glamour team of The Championship! The same guy who said that we had the right man in charge after the appointment of Coyle, further adding that -Quote “From all the people we saw, he was absolutely the right man for us and he has already given us a real lift”. Steve McClaren was also seen was he not!! As if I am going to take notice of someone who has spouted shite like that! Also, how would I have access to a copy of the Wigan Observer anyway? I bet most of our fans who live in Wigan don’t even read it nevermind me here in Leyland! This is what I mean about the silence from the club, why didn’t he say what he had to say on the club’s website or in the matchday programmes? I am sure more fans would read those than the WO!If he did write a piece in the programme then I will hold my hand up as I don’t buy one but the Wigan Observer! I still wouldn’t take him seriously though! :)

Basically Rosler has destroyed the club with his dud signings and Whelan has now lost interest and is running the club down like he did with Orrell Rugby Union.

I only go to games out of a sense of duty I stopped enjoying it bloody ages ago.

No home win since 30th August is DEPRESSING sorry but it is although it is no comparison to losing your job etc.

After all the good times we have had at this football club during the past 18 years, cant we just accept that this season is purely & simply a sh1t one. As i have mentioned on another thread, clubs who are far bigger & with a lot more history than ourselves have had seasons like the one we are experiencing. It sometimes happens in football. & now it is our turn to experience a sh1t period. Just get on with it & get behind the team.

          I presume this is a wind-up? Okay, I’ll bite.

You’re twisting his words regarding the ‘Glamour Team’ quote:

“I was speaking to one of my counterparts in the Championship, and he told me he was really looking forward to the visit of Wigan Athletic because it was one of the glamour games of the season.

I told him it was probably the first time that Wigan Athletic have ever been described as being a glamour team! He explained it was because we’d been in the Premier League for eight years, we were the FA Cup holders and we would be playing in Europe next season.

And I suppose, if you take a step back, we probably are one of the big teams in that league this year.”

That season we made the FA Cup Semi Final again, and the play-offs. So what was wrong with what he said?

And as for the Owen Coyle quote. He was speaking about the new manager that they’d just appointed. What’s he supposed to say?

“We know you’re all pissed off about us being relegated, so we’ve appointed this Coyle bloke because he was cheaper than McLaren, but let’s see how it goes anyway. Get your season ticket renewals in everyone”

And with regards to someone from Leyland getting access to the Wigan Observer: it’s online! It goes under the moniker of Wigan Today, which is combined with the Wigan Evening Post. It appears on the News Now feed and was posted all over the forums!

First time I have seen this! I have just read it all and I agree with the ‘North Korean’ comment underneath! In fact if you read all 11 comments not one of them is buying this bollocks! Not just me then eh ! ;)

The journalist is Paul Kendrick – who’s a friend of the club.

If you’re going to try to get a positive spin on things that really aren’t positive in reality, of course you’re going to get someone to conduct the interview who asks pre-determined questions.

The comments under article on Wigan Now usually throw up some gems. Here’s my favourite ones under this one:

‘if you wrote a book on how not to run a football club the Latics would be the template’

‘Dave. w. has always run the club as a business even when we was at the old Springfield ground and rightly so. and because of that I would like to know exactly what the parachute payments are used on?’

‘Can’t believe that team has cost in excess of £20 million. I would”nt pay them with washers. Latics board must have a book on excuses.’

‘Jonathan Jackson and David Sharpe… Lets look at the their past business history. Failed chip shop owner and the other, well can anyone tell me what success Jackson has had in the past?’

I think the fact that there are only 11 comments hints at the article not being read by that many if you ask me! Whelan choosing Coyle over McClaren has got to be a massive faux pas whichever way you look at it! I wonder what the excuses will be next season if we struggle to make an impact in League One?

Glad to see that this thread finally gained momentum.

Last night’s win at least gives us some hope.

But the fact that three directors have left and the board now consists of the PR man and a 23-year-old lad suggests that there are more questions than I would expect to see answered in the Wgan Observer.

Donny’s point is a good one. If Whelan has gifted the club its stadium, training ground and academy site then he can justifiably be said to have put real money in, and we will be an asset-rich football club.

If somehow they actually sit on the balance sheet of one of his companies, then we are susceptible to rent, mortgage and market fluctuations in perpetuity. What if those companies go bust, get taken over, or change our terms?

Maybe, as people are saying, the TV money, transfer receipts and parachute payments did all go on paying Premier League wages. If so – and the club doesn’t actually turn out to own anything – that seems reckless and short-sighted to me.

‘As people are saying’? It’s simple arithmetic, and it’s publish annually in black and white!

Who’s the PR man you’re talking about? Ed Jones? He isn’t on the board.

Or if you’re talking about Jonathan Jackson, he’s an accountant / ex Financial Director, not a PR man. He does the PR stuff because that’s what a CEO does.

It’s the CEO who runs the club on a day-to-day basis. The board resigning will more than likely make not one iota of difference in what happens at Wigan Athletic.

It’s whether or not young Mr Sharpe tries to get more involved that worries me.

Or maybe its just as likely that those 3 directors (all close associates of Whelan) have just decided to bow out at the same time & allow fresh blood in. Not saying that is what has happened but its just as likely as it being some kind of indication that things are falling apart behind the scenes or that they’ve left coz they don’t want a 23yr old to be chairman/their boss

On ownership of the DW etc.., during the 2011/2012 financial year, all the ordinary & preferred ordinary shares of Wigan Athletic AFC Ltd were transferred to a new parent company (Wigan Athletic Holdings Ltd). Wigan Athletic Holdings own a controlling interest in the company that operates the DW Stadium (I think the council also have shares in the stadium).
I’m no company ownership expert but I guess technically that means that Wigan Athletic AFC Ltd do not own the DW. Why Whelco stopped & Wigan Athletic Holdings started & what (if anything) changed in the new relationship between Latics & Wigan Athletic Holdings (as opposed to Latics & Whelco) I have no idea.
Technically though, somebody who wanted to buy Wigan Athletic could just buy the club & not the ground and presumably somebody could also just buy the controlling interest in the company that owns the DW and not buy Latics – I think

Thanks to both of you for trying to shed light on this.

It would be interesting to know just how bad the club’s debts were when Whelan took over. Because, although large at the time, they’re probably only comparable to the “small” debt he left us with after writing off his loans.

The difference, though, being that we owned our own ground then.

I’ve loved the whole ride into the Premier League. But it’s beginning to look like one family’s reckless adventure, with all the risk loaded on the club’s side.
