The setting up of the Development programme across the board is still in its infancy (remember that getting better facilities was one of the elements that Roberto got from DW when he turned down Villa just 5 months ago).

However – try listening here again – 1:07:50 in:

(you will need to wait just a little for the green bar to load before you can click in the upper box at the past 1 hour mark – but while you’re waiting listen to about 4:40 onwards where you can hear about the development of Development squad players)

they play competitive matches – often against teams made up of players who are in first team consideration at other clubs

As LMB has picked up on I also need to pick up on this argument of yours which I must have missed on my initial read

Against Liverpool last month, Latics had 4 players who are regularly in the 1st team/on the bench or as you put it “in first team consideration”. 5 if you include Dicko who has made the 1st team bench on occasions.
Liverpool had 1 (Jonjo Shelvey) & they absolutely mullered Latics to the extent I recall Latics stretching the keeper only once.
Latics don’t have much on the surface but I’m afraid that if you scratch beneath it there’s nowt

To be honest I’ve long since stopped believing anything that comes out of Bobby’s mouth.
His post match press releases barely make any sense (& I understand the logic of the likes of Griff who point out that he will not slag the team off in public) & he’s said that much at these fanzine interviews which contradicts things he’s said before that he may as well be talking Russian – basically they’re PR exercises & he just regurgitates the same old catchphrases that he knows the fans want to hear.
He can say them till he’s blue in the face but I believe what I see with my eyes not what he tells me & what I’m seeing with my eyes is a club that (apart from financially) is sliding backwards & a man at the helm who seems incapable of stopping that slide

Spot on Tyldesley lad, some of his aftermatch comments border on complete farce and what is worse is that he seems to actually believe the dross he spouts. He forgets that we are there watching it and have our own opinions and sometimes I feel like he is insulting my intelligence.

Having said that ive stated before that the problems on the field and within the club are not solely down to Bobby. He has done what he considers to be best for the club and with the restrictions he has been under keeping us up twice has been quite remarkable to be honest. As for the development etc any 9-1 defeat has to be taken seriously and it does indicate that we have problems throughout the whole set-up at all levels. If Bobby cannot see his playing policies and strategies simply do not work then the hierachy should be giving him a nudge and help the lad out.I believe Bobbys biggest problem is that because he isnt the best manager around, he needs good backroom staff and a bit of experience he can fall back on if and when needed all of which he has,nt had.If Bobby as expected is in charge next season even if we go down then I think the minimum requirement of all Latics fans should be that the sub-standard coaches are sacked and bring in somebody who can help the man to become the manager we all hoped for.

I am now convinced you will moan about anything for the sake of it. Work is more entertaining than you.

In what way am I defending anything? I’m simply saying that you must be pretty desparate to slag off the club if you’re picking on a bunch of kids.

Character building for ’em anyway, a defeat like that.

Mind you, we should probably sign up the lad who scored five, or however many it was. Proven goalscorer that kid.

Griff don’t come that holier than thou crap it doesnt suit you, if anybody says anything anti martinez/club/your view on any chosen subject you go into your defensive mode, more usually in the form of a scathing attack.

In fact if anyone from the ‘darkside’, as you coined the phrase, said that martinez was born in spain you would disagree.
You may ask where is my proof of this – show me one post in the last 3 years when someone from the right side of your track(lightside) has posted anything you have taken issue with, despite the fact just as much crap, if not more, is dished out by them in support of martinez and that is the reason for my post on this subject in the first place.
It is totally irrelevent that the youth team lost or not, my post is aimed at those who keep shouting from the rooftops about the martinez revolution and how it is more important than mere first team ineptitude, so when a result like this happens its easy for the likes of myself to remind them that it is all part of the baseless propaganda they keep telling us about.

Born in Catalunya actually, so he would probably say he wasn’t born in Spain – very nationalistic these Catalans, you know.

Footballers and those involved in it are the same the world over, morals or political/nationalistic beliefs go out of the window if and when it suits, didn’t whelan once say he would never employ a foreign manager?

I didnt see many of those “very nationalistic” catalonians when they were celebrating SPAINS world cup win, and I doubt they were any less “nationalistic” when they were paying substantial winners cheques into there bank accounts in the following days.

Standish to use your own terminology

      “Don’t give me that shite!”

The make up of the teams we play against is exactly the same of ours youngsters nobody has heard of.
I had a conversation about this recently with a colleague who is a blackburn season ticket holder and quite knowledgeable about his club, we were talking about how squad players get ‘match fitness’ as none of them seem to play reserve team games any more as the reserves are full of development players/youth team as you correctly say, but its not just wigan athletics as you claim, its all the teams.

      Loudmouth, I said:

‘they play competitive matches – often against teams made up of players who are in first team consideration at other clubs’

When they played Villa Eric Lichaj, Marc Albrighton, Shane Lowry, Ciaran Clark, and Daniel Johnson all played – who have all featured for the first team.

The Man Utd reserves had Darron Gibson, Rafael Da Silva, Ben Amos, Will Keane, Paul Pogba, and Ezekiel Fryers (all have made at least one competitive Frist Team appearance)

Newcastle had Alan Smith, Sammy Ameobi, Rob Elliott, Haris Vuckic, and Mehdi Abied.

In the 2nd game against Newcastle it was virtually the same team but Dan Gosling in instead of Alan Smith.

I’m sure there are others, but I can’t be bothered looking at any more.

      Tydelsey, I said:

‘The odd first teamer gets a game when coming back from injury, but other than that, it’s a bunch of kids.’

So are you both saying the Youth and Reserve/Development set up was better under other regimes, and Martinez has ruined this too?

Incidentally, have the pies at half time also gone gristly since Roberto took charge?

So much to put you right on in your post, if only I could be arsed, but more and more these days I find I cannot.

I’ll stick to this one, however. I’d venture to suggest that it’s not irrelevant to the kids in the youth team that they lost, some of whom may well browse this forum. But you keep on making a tit out of them if it makes you feel big and better.

you total moron, the irrelevence, is in the context of my post and you fucking know what i meant, the loss does matter to those kids and this is the second time you have made an accusation I have had a dig at them, and I take exception with that,
well mr know it all have a read back at everything I have said, the only people I take issue with is martinez and those who support him blindly him on message boards with no rhyme or reason.
