No. David Gold is a porn baron. Gold group international made their fortune on it.

Still. What do I know? I’ve been going to Jimmy Chinks for years on Wigan Lane. What’s the difference between Brit and Chink?

Bang on Roy, I’ve always said you can only be a racist if you are white. A Pakistani can call me a Btit or someone from Stockholm a Swede but you use the forbidden word and your history. I once worked in a Coventry club which was owned and run by an Indian family so obviously the clientele was predominantly Indian. I know I was a victim of racism but who would fight my corner?, no one gave a flier not even myself as it is not the British way to moan. You are not allowed to make jokes at someone else’s expense anymore. I blame the Yanks. Oh sh.t I’m for the high jump now. :)
I doubt any British person has ever been offended by being called a “Brit” or a Swede being called a “Swede”.

The issue here is that the terms “Paki” & “Chink”, for example, have been and still are used in derogatory terms and that is why people of those ethnic backgrounds find it so offensive.

I should also add that I find it quite astounding that you need that explaining to you.
Sammy, you have completely missed my point. Of course I’m not offended being called a Brit and if somebody calls me white trash or any other names relating to my creed I’m not going to start screaming racism. Like Papa said we tolerate things more and brush it off. The problem today is that you will always find some PC nut or Radical will always jump on any chance to manipulate situations like Mr Whelan’s comments and use them to their own gains. Most right minded Jewish folk will not be offended by his comments yet one guy is likening him to the modern day Hitler. Take the “P” word you used, now surely it is just a shortened version of “Pakistani” yet as you say somewhere down the line someone has got on his soapbox and screamed “that’s offensive to me” so it is seen as derogatory to the Pakistani people. Certain groups are using the race card to fuel propaganda and I imagine that most people living in Pakistan have never even heard the “P” word. Take the problem at Spurs with their Jewish fans, some attention seeking individual or group have protested about the supporters taking the rip out of themselves.

The way I see it is it is not Race that is the problem anymore as we are now a multi cultural society it is the usage of Racism by some Ethnic factions that is. How we cure it is another thing. As a British National we are probably most discriminated against by our own leaders who let the Eurocrats in Brusselles make the laws that govern how we live today. Do we scream blue murder? No we come on here and discuss it. And most times end up having a slanging match :P :P
I don’t think people in general take much notice of the PC brigade because they are too busy getting on with their lives but most people get on with their lives and show respect for others. You, me and the majority of folk are generally courteous and well mannered and show respect for must other people regardless of creed or culture. What gets on most of our backs is being told to be that way by big brother like figures.

My political views are far left. Like it or lump it they are.

I loathe racism, discrimination, anything that deems anyone else inferior or shouldn’t be given a chance.

But – I do not think Whelan is a racist. I do not see anything in his comments other than being naive in the current climate.

Yes – he should have at worst consulted Latics PR people, at best kept quiet.

What he said may be deemed by some to be offensive, but I really fail to see a huge issue.

He has not called people “chinks”, but said that many people (and I know he said all, but cut him some slack) have used the expression. And that is true. “Fancy a chinky for tea?” is well known. Acceptable? I don’t know. I haven’t asked anyone Chinese, but I suspect there are bigger insults.

“Jews like money” he said, but then added which is pushed to one side “as do we all”. Has he portrayed them all as Shylock, and suggested they should be deported to camps? No. He has (probably unwisely) said they like money – like the rest of us – not least Dave Whelan.

Yes – he should have stayed schtum (am I allowed to say that?). He’s not done us any favours. But it’s a storm in a teacup by the perennially offended.

I am hugely offended by chairmen never appointing minority group chief executives, minority group managers and minority group directors of football. I am offended by FA committees being full of white, men in suits – no place for ordinary football fans of whatever background, race, creed or such. Even white man-in-the street fans get no look in. That surely is discriminatory.

I am offended that David Gold can pontificate when he made his fortune in porn (no problem with that per se, but now to come across as holier than thou is laughable).

I am offended that an MP who has a history of creepy texting to a junior member of staff now is demanding that the FA take action.

I am offended that people who espouse loudly the freedom of speech, and condemn journalists hacking private messages, are now on a witchhunt over people saying what they think, gleaned from private messages between friends.

I do not condone Dave Whelan’s comments. He would have been better off keeping quiet. But it is not a hanging offence.

Today’s news is tomorrows chip wrappers, as my Granny used to say.

Mind you – I wouldn’t like to tell you what else she used to say.

            Some good points there GL.

Unfortunately in these days if even one person gets upset it becomes offensive. As we are all different there will always be at least one person who is offended by most comments. That’s the age we live in.

As I’ve said, Whelan should have said nothing about the texts or the past and diverted every comment back to the fact he believes Mackay is the best man for the job. If it turns out Tan is right about Mackay then we’re apparently covered, but it will no longer look like we’re defending the club.

Yes, JR, I have mentioned that before.

He did it for McManaman the other year. His support for “the tackle” drew flack away from Callum. The big story is now Whelan, leaving Mackay to get on with the real business of sorting out the team.

Is Whelan fussed? Not a bit.

I know people disagree with this viewpoint, but I suspect there’s a little bit of truth in it.

Nuneaton, if I’ve missed your point then I am confused as to what point you were trying to make.

White British people may very well be more tolerant of racist remarks directed at them but that doesn’t mean it’s OK to make racist comments towards others and then not expect to get called on it.

If we were to go back 40 years ago programmes such as ‘Till Death Us Do Part and Love Thy Neighbour made popular viewing. If you were to watch those programmes today you would, I hope, find them embarrassing and uncomfortable, not as a result of the rants of the politically correct or the radical but because people have moved on culturally and become more sensitive towards and more aware of how such content could cause offence.

The “P” word IS offensive to Pakistanis however you may try to dismiss it as “just” an abbreviation. And don’t you think that way back some black guy also stood on a soapbox and screamed “that’s offensive to me” when the words “nigger” and “coon” were used to describe him, words I assume you DO find offensive.

People will always try to make political mileage out of the race issue because they know they will seldom encounter any opposing views, which is why Whelan should have kept his big gob shut rather than try to make light of those pretty damming text messages Mackay made. I do agree that the so called anti-Semitic comments he made have been completely overhyped by the media. His attempt to justify the use of the word “chinky” is in my opinion much more objectionable.

As for curing things I certainly don’t think the comments and views of some on this board is how we should go about things.

I think it’s gone too far and may well have caused irreparable damage to the club. Wigan Athletic run the risk of forever being labelled the racist club and any incident or misdemeanour with even a hint of racist connotations will be seized upon and result in the perpetuation of the racist tag.

Can I just pick up on your exemplar of “Till Death Us Do Part”?

The whole point of that programme was the unacceptability of Alf Garnett’s views. I would not in the slightest feel uncomfortable watching that, as you suggest. He was then, as now, deemed an unacceptable racist whose views were condemned. That was the point. We, my generation, were prepared to tackle such issues head on – not drive such thoughts underground in case someone was offended, but confront the issues. Alf Garnett was no more acceptable then than now.

The 70s proramme that is on Channel 4 over the weekend misses the points completely, by people who are subtitled as being “viewer in the 70s” when they were probably 5 years old.

                    History is being rewritten.

Just wait till history judges TOWIE, Benidorm, Jeremy Kyle, et al.
