You could make some clear comparisons to this fixture and determine how much support has been lost. Last season, Wigan hosted Sunderland the game after a drubbing at Spurs. This season Wigan host Sunderland after a victory at Spurs.
Prior to last year, all the premier league fixtures between Wigan & Sunderland at the DW have been played early season. Every fixture has kicked off at 3pm on a Saturday.
The constant factor above was that Sunderland either sold out or came damn close to selling all their tickets.
My guess is that the total crowd will be around 17,000, with 4500 – 5000 supporting Sunderland, but I guess it depends on how many take up the offer of dirt cheap tickets.
My point is that 5000 people who turned up last November didnt today. I guess they may have something more important to spend their money on this weekend.
Everyone is saving up for the big game tomorrow, so i heard.
Guess they didn’t save hard enough. Gate today at the DW was just under 10,000 including the Leeds fans. So the 2 mighty rugby towns of Wigan & Leeds couldn’t muster up as many fans as Wigan home fans attended yesterday.
Saw about 10mins of it on the TV for my sins and Leeds must have had at least 1,500 there themselves.
Awful turnout from the Wiganers.
Not sure we’ll be hearing from them on here any time soon. But i bet when they’ve calmed down they wont be able to resist a peek to see what has been said. :D

Didn’t lose at home again did they!.
Think their a bit gutted tonight
What a stupid sport, they lost, but get another home tie to try to get through to the semis.
St Helens are already through, and they can choose who they play next.
but I know in our first season up they only brought just over a 1000 (a stark contrast to a few months before when they sold out the East Stand for a Championship game)
I note that you are an armchair fan these days – was that a game you actually went to or did you just hear it from a bloke in a pub?
Check about 1 min & 48 seconds into this link and you’ll see what “just over 1000 fans” looks like:
I was at that one Mr Lord – I wasn’t married, nor did I have any kids, nor had I started refereeing. In fact if you look closely you can probably see me – I was in the first row down from the entrance out from under the stand & to the left of the block with the disabled platform in it. Seat M224 my memory serves me right.
Anyway, as someone who was actually at that game (as opposed to someone who has used a shaky, mobile phone clip which shows no more than half of 2 sections & a tiny bit of a third) of the away stand I can tell you that Sunderland did not come anywhere near to selling out their allocation for that game. In fact it was commented on quite alot on this board afterwards because several months before many of em had been on here bragging about their massive followings after they’d brought 7000 for a midweek game
Having seen that clip 1500 may well have been a very conservative recollection but there weren’t many more than 2-2.5k – still a following Latics would be more than happy with but they are not (consistantly) one of the larger followings that come ot the JJB – which was the point I was trying to make originally
Mind you having watched alot of yesterday’s game (which I enjoyed) & having seen 2-3 banks of seating in the East Stand, probably the same in the west stand & plenty of empty seats in theouth stand, I’m guessing you’ll be keeping quiet about attendances today
