12,000 is the realistic, sustainable, home support we could generate outside the Premier League. But it won’t happen overnight.

Yesterday 12,000 offered far more in terms of atmosphere than you’d expect. If we where regularly generating those sort of crowds we’d no longer look upon the stadium as an albatross around our necks. Rather an opportunity to generate greater revenue and initiatives to attract new fans.

I do in part agree with some of the above points regarding hospitality. It’s a great opportunity to generate revenue as filling those suits is not so much about selling to fans, but businesses. By all accounts the facilities are due a major refurbishment…..although it’s not clear if this is directly linked to the takeover. It’s said the current set-up isn’t ideal to maximise usage and revenue.

Interesting. I’m thinking this is something to do with the corners being left open, this preventing concerts being held in the stadium, as there are houses on Scot lane that are too close with noise regulations of holding such events. Perhaps if they somehow build at the ticket office corner, it’ll solve this problem and give Wigan a real venue for gigs and concerts. Inside the stadium at that corner, a video screen would be a great addition for when they do the teams, etc.

I think if we ever get to the Premier league again we should give the east stand to the away fans so if they want to bring 6 or 7 thousand they can, make the south stand the home end and the North stand the family stand.

In time they pay for themselves as they’re used for advertising.

What the took are you lot moidering about the stadium for its great as it is.

            Reduce the capacity
WTF, the most important thing to clubs like Wigan is always revenue so lets spend millions making it smaller and cutting off the possibility of clubs like Utd,Liverpool putting thousands of pounds into the club if and when we play them

            Beltin idea

Stop away clubs bringing huge followings to keep them quieter.

When the hell has this club been affected by playing to noisy fans outnumbering us. We played Milwall at Wembley twice when they took zillions but we won both games. In its 86 year history this club has thrived on defying the odds. If clubs can bring 7000 plus then let them it just means that 7000 will go home fed up after we beat them.

            Safe standing

Wont happen at the DW, it was purposely designed for seats and offers perfect views thanks to the steepness of the terraces which means when you’re sat down you are not looking at the back of someone’s head. West Brom had to pass an angles test to see if the terraces were suitable. We wouldn’t pass that test without again investing millions making it right.

            Our fanbase.

How many times do we have to have this conversation. We would have had to stay in the Prem for a generation maybe more to stop Wigan folk supporting the big four neighbours pissing in our pond. It wont happen our support is not down to apathy towards the club as one mentioned its down to geography and the fact that most people will follow the glory instead of following the heart like true Latics fans do.

We have a great club and its home is a great stadium no need to change anything.

BTW, dear old Springy held 30,000 before restrictions had to be put in place.

Be proud of the DW its a great symbol to represent how far the club has evolved. COYL

              NO, IT’S FAR TOO BIG.

A REDUCEMENT TO AROUND 18K WOULD BE BETTER. WE WOULD STILL STRUGGLE TO GET 25K ON.

AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS. STANDS TOO STEEP FOR TERRACING. IT’S HARD ENOUGH EMPTYING WITH SEATS, NEVERMIND TERRACING. STANDING WON’T EVER COME BACK AS A GENERALISATION. CLUBS CAN CHARGE MORE FOR A SEAT.

AROUND 4000 OF THE EXTRA FANS WE ATTRACTED WERE REALLY TRADITIONALLY FANS OF LIVERPOOL, UNITED ETX LIVING LOCALLY. THEY CAME BECAUSE THEY COULD SEE THOSE CLUBS AND OTHER WORLD STARS. A LOT DROPPED OFF IN SECOND SEASON BECAUSE OF WHELAN PUTTING PRICES UP. WHEN WE GOT RELAGATED WE LOST 4K OFF THE SUPPORT OVERNIGHT AND HAVE LOST ANOTHER COUPLE OF THOUSAND OVER LAST 3 SEASONS. BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL.

We have a great club and its home is a great stadium no need to change anything.
GREAT CLUB, SMALL BUT FRIENDLY FAMILY CLUB WE CAN BE PROUD LF. BUT WE, AND THE RUGBY, PLAY IN TOO BIG A STADIUM.

BTW, dear old Springy held 30,000 before restrictions had to be put in place.
BACK IN THE DAYS OF METHUSLA, MAYBE. I’VE BEEN GOING SINCE 86 AND CAPACITY WAS LIMITED TO 12K V LEEDS.

YES, IT’S A VERY GOOD FACILITY. BUT TOO BIG. AND DESIGN PREVENTS OTHER USES SUCH AS CONCERTS ETC BECAUSE NOISE ESCAPES TOO EASILY.

Noise Escapes to Easily? Do Glastonbury organisers know this?

Maybe the reason is the stadium is a dual sport stadium and is used all year round.

Absolutely spot on there Nuneaton, best post on here for ages.
The ground was half full on Saturday but the atmoshere in the second half was great.
We were playing Wimbledon who brought around 500 fans, would you ever have imagined a few years ago that we would be unhappy with a crowd of over 12500 against Wimbledon?
With a half decent away following against a bigger more illustious club, Saturdays attendance could quite easily have been pushing 18000+.
We have to have ambition, so leave the capacity as it is, but by all means fill the corners in if needed if it means generating more income for concerts etc.

Just from an aesthetics point of view. If it’s possible to put up big screens in the corner, it should be possible to put up corner advertising boards. The stadiums due an overhaul and set for for a rebranding. May as well look into ways to improve the matchday atmosphere and fan experience.

As I said in my previous reply on this thread .. the takeover (or not) can have a significant say on our attendances next season .. PLUS all the other replies on this thread such as improving/upgrading/screens etc, this ALL could happen if we get new owners, a big cash injection and they want to see us move forwards..

                      #168704
I’ve said it before & i’ll say it again, our stadium is way too big for our support. A bournemouth size stadium would have been more sufficient.

But yes. The people of wigan are shocking when it comes to supporting their town team. 30000 turned up in the town when we won the cup. As delia would say, “where are you, lets be ‘avin you.”

                      .

Who had the better vision Mr Whelan or the owners of Bournemouth whose stadium is costing them millions in lost revenue because it is way too small. They would swap grounds with us in a heartbeat if possible. The DW is paid for and not costing the club anything for having a 25000 capacity. If we ever get back to the greed league and investment is available for us to compete then again it will not cost the club millions in upgrading the stadium. The DW is fine as it is. Only some Latics fans could have a whinge and want to reduce capacity. Whatever next bring back the Springy bogs where you could smell the piss from 100 yards away.

Seriously though if the same thing happens that happened at Wolves we could be celebrating being Championship champions this time next year and we will need the seats.

Nuneaton, with all due respect, I think your missing the main point of my post. Our stadium is way too big for our support. Thats all!

Then increase the support, not lower the capacity
