Bosselli,South Americas top scorer.Arrives on tuesday and given an isolated role in the baptism of fire mauling by Blackpool. Then our astute manager continues to play him on his own up front until whatever confidence he did have was drained. Then reserves,Genoa ,tatty bye.He had to be better than we saw ,but will go down as a flop.As for players repeatedly turning us down would you not agree that our hammerings ,and glued in bottom 5 has compounded our player attractability.Didnt stop Heskey, cattermole, zog ,melchiot, bramble arriving albeit not superstars but a cut above what we have now.I ask ,if it were Steve Bruce who put us in this mire instead of Robbie would you be so sympathetic and surround him with your criticism deflector shield ?

You talk about bad signing’s and then bring up Steve Bruce?

Krapo, De riddled and that chinese fella….

3 of our worse premiership signings without a doubt!

We’ve always struggled to attract players; it’s nothing to do with who’s in charge of the club, and everything to do with the club being in a small insular northern town with low crowds and low salaries.

Cattermole was a bit of a coup when he was signed – even though he was a young lad. N’Zogbia was seen as a lazy troublemaker, whilst Heskey, Melchiot, and Bramble were all regarded as has-beens, and didn’t exactly have a queue of clubs waiting to sign them. None of those three would be signed these days anyway because of the wage structure that’s been in place since Bruce left.

The biggest name signing we’ve had in the last few years is Moses.

edit: the only criticism deflector shield in place is if I think something posted on here is totally inaccurate. I’ve no ill feeling towards Steve Bruce, and had someone posted something similar – ie. it was Steve Bruce’s long ball tactics that was discouraging players from signing, then I’d also back him up and say you were wrong.

Quite simply: it’s the club’s wage structure, the empty seats, the club’s policy of selling the best players to balance the books, and the flat cap and whippet persona of Wigan that puts players off signing – not a set of tactics and manner of play that you don’t happen to like.

Kapo cost 3 million – he looked the part prior to signing for us , I actually remember going to birmingham when he had a blinder against us, bossed midfield and scored 2 goals- however he rwas poor for us so yes he was a mistake, de ridder and “the chinese fella”(Won-Hee Cho,who was actually South Korean)were both free transfers, de ridder never let us down when he played, and cho was probably more about raising our profile in the asian markets. And those signings were all made when our transfer budget was alot more than now – dont forgrt about the massive profits bruce’s signings brought in as well, although king and kapo are negatives on his transfer cv.

If you want to compare signings, how about this front 3

        boselli(£6+mill)
        scotland(£3mill)
        di santo(£4mill)

Now for a team with such a limited amount of money to spend now compared to what we were prepared to spend in the past the amount of money for goal return that martinez has spent is actually a disgrace.

I’d agree that Boselli is a waste of money if he never plays again and that money is not recouped – and I’m still confident he could have been a decent player if he been given a chance / been prepared to give it another go.

And yes, Scotland was a flop, but every manager tries to take his best players with him when he moves to another club: look at Bruce with Kapo, Palacios, De Ridder, then for Sunderland with Cattermole and Bramble; Paul Ince with Keith Andrews; Neil Warnock with Paddy Kenny; Sam Allardyce with Kevin Nolan. Jason Scotland was one of Martinez’s top performers at Swansea, so what do you expect?

…and for the record, Di Santo was £2 million, not £4 million.

There’s no need to get on your high horse over Martinez’s striker failures.

Have a look at how many Torres has scored for Chelsea, Ngog at Bolton, Crouch at Stoke, Jerome at Stoke, Boothroyd at QPR, Carroll at Liverpool, Bendtner at Sunderland..the list goes on and on.

Those 3 players you mentioned were worth a gamble and who knows, Di Santo is only a young kid and is improving game by game. The potential is there to bring this lad on and maybe, just maybe the £13m investment you have highlighted in those 3 signings, may eventually bring in a decent profit. ;)

Your there again -I suggest you start to read what has been said prior to my post and respond to the whole debate not the ‘opposite of anything i say’ one you always react to, if you care to look i was comparing martinez’s signings of those 3 to someone blurting out the everything bruce did was bad propaganda, we had 2 years of using the bruce’s “deadwood” as the reason we were poor in defence of martinez, but to answer you about di santo he is no longer a kid he nearly 23 and he is not improving, he is exactly the same as we saw on september 11th 2010.

I apologise for bringing di santo into this because I like the lad and love his effort and in the right set up will score goals, I honestly feel that martinez is di santos problem not the lad himself, as i also do with many of our players.

Listen, if Boselli had been a success and bagged a hat full he would have been gone last Summer ! Is he still our player ? As fans and paying customers should the club at least tell us what the current situation is regarding him ? Nobody seems to know the full story on this enigma !

I dare you to put a poll on here to get peoples views on whether Di Santo has improved since he joined us. :woohoo:

              I’m not saying that he’s won me or many other fans over, as being the player to get us out of the bottom 3, but when he first joined us he couldn’t;
              – trap a bag of cement,
              – beat Jimmy Krankie to a header,
              – hold up his own britches,
              – kick the ball any farther than I could hitting it with bull rush,
              – link up my grand son’s scalextric.

There were no positives when he first joined us apart from he was 6′ 4″, had worked with some top coaches at Chelsea, was deemed good enough to have joined Chelsea in the first place.

I now see a player who runs his socks off every time he plays, runs the channels quite well, wins his fair share of headers, holds the ball up well, links up nicely with other players and is not frightened of having a pop at goal.
              Finished article…NO……improving…..YES!

At the end of the day if you want a prolific striker it will cost upwards of £10 million obviously the club can’t afford to fork out that much money and have to make do with players in our budget

Whist bringing up former strikers what about that gem Agahowa now who signed him then ?

Why is out on loan to the club who we paid £6million for in the first place is a good question in my book !!

So we can recoup part of the fee we paid from loan fees, have his wage bill covered and give him the chance to get back to his goal scoring ways so he can either come back in good form or tempt a large in enough transfer fee.

Talk about criticising for the sake of it…

i’ve come up with a solution on the goal scoring crisis:-
get someone, anyone, whether he costs ten bob or ten million to hit the frigger every now and again.
                    there martinez out,pemblue in
