Why not make this a special day and charge £15-00 maximum and let’s see what kind of crowd this attracts.
      Shrewsbury at home.

Or better still donny, seeing as its xmas & all that, £10 for adults & £1 or £2 for kids under 16.

Even better but 7000 season ticket holders would need a treat too.

Or better still charge £25-30. Get the waverers to use their new Xmas present half-season ticket. And rake the money in from thos who can’t be bothered to commit something upfront to the club, and from the Shrewsbury fans.
You could make it free and people still wouldn’t come.
As said, what about us who have put the money in upfront before we knew which end of teh table we were going to be?

          Agree with you.

I don’t think it would make much difference if they made it so cheap on the gate. Why? Because it appears…deep breath….we are what we are. The support we are currently averaging, around 8000 home supporters, is basically what we have as a hard-core base support. Through relegations, poor form and poor management, we ‘lost’ 4-5000 ‘supporters’ along the way. I think that perhaps only 2000 of those were potential ‘real’ supporters, whilst the other 3000 lost were Premier League/Glory hunting cling ons who, as soon as things went downhill, seemingly lost interest. I hope those 3000 dont come back. They were only bothered about seeing the likes of Gerrard and Rooney.
But the 2000 we lost who had the potential to be ‘proper’ supporters, we could do with those returning. But not just in April to cling onto a promotion party. But getting them back….I’ve no idea how we can do it. If we could get our home support average up to 10k, I think that would be quite decent, given our latter 3000k average at Springfield. A 230% growth in 19 years wouldnt be bad at all. Disappointing if you consider the Premier League crowds, but it wouldnt be bad at the level we are now at. Consider the small away followings we get here too, 10k home support would be great. We all know that the stadium is too big at this, or even Championship level.

But our aim HAS to be aiming to improve our gates by an extra 2000. How? I am not sure. We need to get the attendance to double figures with the home support and let the away support, big or small, be the gravy. 10,436 “with 322 from Rochdale” and things like that. Get up in the Championship and “14,780 with 4226 from Leeds” etc. These crowds would be acceptable. Still a lot of empty seats, but a lot better.

I am staggered by the apathy shown by a lot of the town, however I do find the £27 matchday price at last Saturdays game to be too high. In comparison, a main stand seat at last nights Wolves V Bolton game could be had yesterday for £25, and thats a division higher. Are the club helping themselves? Probably not. However, Wolves are in the situation where both ends behind the goal are completely sold out. They had just short of 30k on last night, so they can afford to charge less. Where as Latics are having to balance things to make figures balance, and make up for the shortfall from the lack of support.

If more people made the effort and were committed, the club could put the prices down. A catch 22 situation, you might say. Like the working tax payers deductions going towards the benefits of those who dont work. So those who for whatever reason cant get a season ticket and have to pay on the gate prices are being punished by those who are staying away. I only hope the club repays the loyal people when we are on the verge of promotion and the latecomers are shouting the loudest.

          But its never happened before….

Our fanbase is the same as it was the last time we were in this league. You could give tickets away with packs of crisps and we will still get the same amount of fans.

Great idea Brains, you must love seeing all the plastic seats so much that you won’t even consider ideas to get fans in.

Donny there is one massive flaw with all your ideas for cheap tickets. Everything else in the game is going up policing stewarding etc and these bills have to be paid . How can the club offset these running costs whilst reducing its main course of income?. It isn’t viable marrer since we don’t have deep pockets anymore.

                Exactly.

I mentioned the comparison with Wolves who were charging £25 last night. They can charge less….because they get more on to start with. So they are already covering their costs a lot better than we can.

We shall just have to wait and see what ideas new owners bring in. They will just do whatever they feel to bring in an higher income stream.
The end of the mega cheap season ticket could be on the cards.

If they do, they do, I for one would still pay it as I did when DW hiked the prices a few years ago.
They would be foolish to alienate their bread and butter fans, but whatever this great club of ours does we can be sure of one thing they will be criticised and slagged off by the usual suspects. ;)

Tha’s gone on about it long enough now and no fucker cares, and neither do you if truth were told as you still pay it every week. Get your hand in your pocket in June and get a season ticket, think what you would save on the £2 on the day or card payment hike, and no more stressing your self out at the East Stand ticket office being shut either. First dibs on Cup and away tickets as well, and a seat of your own.

We normally get mince pies free on boxing day, there’s a treat.

                      You beat me to it.

The problem we have & i’ve said it since august 1999, the stadium is too big for a club the size of wigan (including our lodgers). A stadium with a bournemouth size capacity would be more beneficial.

Having a stadium with a 15000 capacity would have stopped our premier league supporters coming along to see your rooney’s & gerrards. Half of our attendances versus lfc, mufc etc were wigan born glory hunters coming along to see their heroes. A smaller capacity would see at a guess, 10-12000 ST holders, plus a few pay on the days & away fans.

Im not sure how many ST’s we have sold this season. But 8000 regulars (& a few away supporters) would look better & fuller in a smaller stadium. I understand DW’s ambition. But a club that was only averaging 3000 upon his buying of the club, was too much to ask to fill a 25000 stafium IMO.

And therefore the wigan born glory hunters would have no room to be able to see their heroes, as the stadium would be filled with genuine supporters.

I am not into this ‘the Stadium is too big’ shite.
We have had well over a hundred attendances over 15,000 already and plenty more over 20,000 since we moved to the JJB/DW.
We have every chance of getting that many in, or more in the future.
Having a smaller capacity is small time thinking.
We are not ‘Little Wigan’ anymore, we are Wigan Athletic, who, only a few years ago lifted the FA Cup and were a Premier League Football Club.
We have to keep that in mind and keep hold of the ambition to keep growing as a club and get back to the PL.
Having a stadium with the capacity we have will help us to fullfill that ambition and get more fans in on the journey.
A 10/12K stadium like Bournemouths will not help them to grow as a club as once the PL fans drop off there crowds could easily be back down to 3/4K ala Blackpool who also have a low capacity stadium.
We have so far managed to keep hold of an extra 6000 fans since DW bought us, if we get back to the PL and average the heady heights of 20,000 or more again on a regular basis, it is possible that another 6000 fans will get the bug like they have over the last 20 years, and continue to watch us if and when we go down again.
