Ticket prices are out Donny & not too bad I think, about normal for this league. Boxing day matches at home generally are larger crowds for us.

28 November 2017 at 11:41 pm #163706When you see grounds like that with steep stands that have no width to them it just shows how pathetic Wigan Council were standing in the way of developing Springfield Park. With the land there was at Springfield there could have been a bigger Stadium than The New York with increased car parking and entrances and exits on four sides.
Nah, we had to move. There was a severe lack of access at Springfield. No way could we have had Premier League crowds there. Access and parking problems galore.
But no less access etc than at Anfield, Goodison, Ewood, Deepdale, Turf Moor, Gigg Lane, Spotland, Boundary Park, Gresty Road,Bloomfield,Prenton,Oakwell, St James Park and more. But agree where we are is much better than what we could have ever wished for.
Well, er, yeah, Springfield had FAR less access than those grounds. St Andrews drive and behind the Shevvy end were ko access, town end was limited too. All access was at main stand side.
We could never have progressed at that ground. Council restricted that last game against City to about 7000 or so.
Hold on a minute. Anfield has 50k crowds on and Goodison has 34k crowds. Its a bit different. None of those grounds are penned in anything like Springfield was.
29 November 2017 at 12:37 am #163708Not forgetting the revenue the old site brought in to help fund the JJB.
29 November 2017 at 12:55 am #163709I understand what you mean but we had so much land at Springfield and with some help rather than hindrance from the council (The Devil Incarnate) access and further parking could have been made on four sides quite easily. We could have fit The New York Stadium in there no problem with plenty more car parking spaces available behind the Shevvy and Town ends.
Not much point in talking about it now though as we moved to and contributed to the development of New Springfield with the sale of Springy and the grants we received from the football trust.29 November 2017 at 10:45 am #163711I understand what you mean but we had so much land at Springfield and with some help rather than hindrance from the council (The Devil Incarnate) access and further parking could have been made on four sides quite easily. Pompey and Brighton spent donkeys years wrangling with their councils over sites and Wimbledon ended up being franchised away from their manor because a location couldn’t be sorted. I thought that between Wigan MBC and Mr Whelan they made our move away from dear Springy a cake walk.
29 November 2017 at 11:05 am #163712with the sale of Springy and the grants we received from the football trust.I was up visiting last week and took my dog for a walk on the field behind the ex ground. I was very surprised to see the old concrete fence from the Shevvy end was still up in parts.
29 November 2017 at 2:19 pm #163719My memory is going back to pre Whelan days regarding the Council DJ.

A walk? Dont you mean a shit?
29 November 2017 at 3:41 pm #163723My memory is going back to pre Whelan days regarding the Council DJ.Like yourself I believe a new smaller ground could have been built on the old site but the club would never have been able to fund it. Moving to RP was always the best option with Springy being prime for housing development and the council made it happen

Not much point in talking about it now though as we moved to and contributed to the development of New Springfield with the sale of Springy and the grants we received from the football trust. We couldn’t put turnstiles on the St Andrew’s Side, nor could the height of the stand s be increased & we didn’t own the land behind the town end. To have made a bigger stadium would either have involved buying up all the surrounding houses (as Liverpool did) &/or moving the pitch – getting planning permission to develop Springfield Park when all the houses were already in situ would have been nigh on impossible
I’m aware of some alleged shenanigans involving the council & the town’s sporting sides but I do know that they were helpful with pushing the JJB through. They even broke their own planning regulations to do it which I think came to light when that scrap yard owner took them to court
And for what it’s worth, the sale of Springfield Park did not fund the building of the JJB in any way, shape or form
29 November 2017 at 6:26 pm #163727Our fanbase is the same as it was the last time we were in this league. You could give tickets away with packs of crisps and we will still get the same amount of fans.So lets just fleece the non ST holders that do come eh?…….Brilliant,

Well if you’re expecting me, as an upfront paying season ticket holder to subsidise the once in a blue moon merchants you can think again. Stuff them. If they don’t want to pay £24 for a top of the table Boxing Day game then balls to them.
29 November 2017 at 6:50 pm #163730Our ground isnt perfect, id have preferred closed corners and lower stands up to an 18k capacity. The open corners can let in some pretty freezing winds at times. And a more closed stadium wouldve given us tye ability to host concerts and things like that, where the open corners fall short with the noise volume regulations. I think that was a mistake.
But its pretty good, central, has decent road links (as decent as you can get in Wigan) and is something a lot of clubs can only dream of.
Oh and the catering has imoroved. Those Balti pies are bang on!

There aren’t any that’s the point. If there were then prices could afford to be lower.
29 November 2017 at 7:14 pm #163733Tilders, if the sale of Springy didn’t help to fund the JJB then where did the money for the sale of the land go to?. Surely it went for a tidy sum. I imagine the houses built on it are freehold so the builder must have stumped up a pretty penny.
