They get given a go every day in training to reach certain levels. Maybe some can’t
But they could reach those levels only a few months ago in training?
How does a coach/manager change his training techniques/standards and intensity to fit in with whatever League the club is playing in?
Apart from a few players i cant see much difference in tactics or style of play than last season, not getting away with the silly mistakes/individual errors we made last season at this level.[/quote]
We weren’t in this Division a few months ago. Thinking a player can and them being able to are totally different things.
I have no idea what his training methods are but clearly some players don’t show enough of what he wants hence why they don’t get picked.
Eggy, your theory could also work the other way around.
One or two of our players can obviously do what Caldwell wants in training (against each other) but are not cutting the mustard on match days against the opposition.
How many times over the years have we had managers that won’t play players then leaves for whatever reason a new manager comes along the players all start with a clean slate players that couldn’t get a game now do under the new manager the player grasps the nettle, plays well, scores goals etc and we hear fans saying “And to think John Smith wouldn’t play him” or “that lad couldn’t get a game a few weeks ago”
We won’t know what these lads can or cannot do in this league if they are not given game time.
Would have liked the majority of the squad to have been given a chance. All return to pre-season confident after winning the league. Train and play pre-season games together, play the first part of the season together. Keep the momentum going from the second half of last season. If we were having problems then changes could be made in January.
Change for the sake of change much of it.

And no doubt that if we were to find ourselves stuck near the bottom in January having not altered the squad in summer Sharpe Caldwell and the club would have copped it from all sides for not showing ambition. Criticism for the sake of criticism most of it.

And what if we found ourselves in the top six of the Championship come January with last seasons squad?
It’s an unfortunate symptom of going up the divisions that decent local youngsters such as Jennings, Chow, Burke, and Flores are now being edged out, especially when it’s in favour of the untested likes of McDonald, Burn and Garbutt. I’d have preferred we stuck with what we had and asked new signings to prove themselves rather than upsetting the equilibrium in such a Rosler-like way.
I for one would have welcomed a battle cry from Gary in June announcing that he was going to give the squad a bash at proving themselves at an higher level particularly if he said that he was looking at bringing in and moving players out in January if things didn’t work out.
Things could work out well as it is who knows but if it doesn’t Gary will be in for more critism than he is for casting off the players he has.

Good shout Martin, i said more or less the same a few days ago on the “Players dropped” thread.
In most cases if a player is good enough for a certain division he is playing in it. If we feel any players wont cut it in the championship then its better to let them go and bring someone in who we think is. Its that simple. There is no room for loyalty. Its business.
Dont forget also that as we sign new players that they will probably be on higher wages than last season add to that pay rises for promotion and more players will have to go than come in to balance the books. Again…..business.
So all last seasons side were playing in league one so that was their level so they should all have gone! That’s taking it to the extreme I know.
For SOME players it is the Manager’s belief that yes it is their level so they will be moved on if possible. For others the Manager believes they are capable of more so will keep them.
