According to article on newsnow it could be the end of January before the league approve the takeover so funds for new blood may have to be generated. That being the case I would keep Nick Powell and run with what we have. We are good enough with the current squad to get promotion then invest in better players should we make the championship next season. C,Mon you tics.

Don’t think you will be too far away RPM with your figures. Unless we sell Powell for a few million.
Worrying really & that’s why Whelan is selling up, doesn’t want to burden his family with a football club.
Could be some interesting years ahead of us?

Had a debate elsewhere recently about the financial position of our club and what the future might look like. Some of you maybe interested in what I found –

Starting with the facts. The below relates to the 15/16 season when we were promoted from League 1 (Last set of published figures).

        Turnover – £15.7m (This turnover includes £12m in Parachute Payments :( )

        Salary Costs – £11.9m

        Transfers – £2.0m profit made

        Overall loss made – -£2.3m

Below is an assumption of what the financial figures will be for this season (17/18) by using the figures from the last time we were in this League (Less the parachute payments)

        Turnover – £3.7m

Salary costs – £10m (Assumed a small reduction but could be higher, Powell, Morsy, Grigg will be on decent wages)

Transfers – I’m going to ignore any profit made from players sales because the club cannot rely on having a 6/7m Yanic Wildschute to sell every season.

Overal loss of – £6-7mill (Surprisingly a similar figure we received for yanic)

        To Summarise

        – Current wage budget maintained due to Yanic money. Squad would look a lot different from the one you see today if he wasn’t sold in January

        – Failure to get promoted back to the Championship will result in the squad being broken up and wage bill reduced to around the 4million mark (a 60% reduction). Alternatively, the club rack up debts of about 6/7mill a year.

        – Being in the championship worth about £8mill extra a year to our club (Heard Jonathan Jackson say this once). Essential that we get promoted to have a chance of keeping the likes of Morsy, Grigg, Powell, etc.

        – Parachute Payments may have stopped, but we are still benefitting from the effects of the investments made with the premier league money. Yanic being one of those investments. This wont last.

I’ve obviously made a lot of assumptions above. Feel free to correct me.

Thought I would bump this back to the top having just viewed the latest set of financial figures that cover the 16/17 season. My prediction for this seasons finances appear on target based on the latest figures

We will post a 6/7million loss for this season ending 31st May 2018 (figures for this season will be realeased this time next year). This is unless we sell players to cover this loss in January.

The perspective new owners will know this. Will they be happy to cover the losses or will they persue a sustainable future?

        Interesting times.[/quote]

I’ve read that at last nights AGM, Jonathan Jackson confirmed that losses for this season (17/18) will be around the 10million mark. Its worse than I predicted.

        Some points of note:

        1. Our Wage bill must be in access of 13million a year to record a loss of 10million. For comparison, Burton Albion’s wage bill was around 3million when they were promoted with us back in 15/16

        2. Turnover will be around 4million in league 1. Burton Albion’s Turnover was also around 4million (L1), it jumped to 11million when competing in the championship. I think we can expect a similar jump in turnover.

If you didn’t already know, promotion is essential.

If players got improved contracts after promotion without relegation clauses in them or new signings like Burn didn’t have them in then that wage bill is a possibility.

Wage bill won’t be ten million. Top earner at club is Nick Powell on 8K per week. Rest nowhere near that.

Bigroy was right. Wage bill was nowhere near 10million.

Unless we make it back into the top flight again and Reep the money that comes with doing so, I predict this club will fold in about 5 years, maybe less.

Our support is just abysmal and it’s obvious the books don’t tally up with wages etc. I reckonaim reason Whelans are getting out is they can see a sinking ship. I he did same with JJB.

Whelan doesn’t want to have to deal with all the fallout when we go tits up. Can’t blame him either, at his time of life. He doesn’t want his family lumbered either.

So we will fold in 5 years but clubs smaller than us are all gonna be ok? Clubs with crippling debt are all gonna be ok? Ooops, forgot your friends friends parrots cats dog who breaks the law.

                    Yes. I’m serious.

Unless the new owners come in and chuck away daft sums of their money, and or we get back into the Premier League, or if we suddenly attract another 5000 fans every home game.

A 10 mil loss predicted for 2017/18. And gone are the days of having a player we could guarantee selling for 5 or 7 million.

Another year or two, without increased income from any of the above, and we will be in major shit street. You’ll see….

Your comments regarding animals are puzzling to say the least.

Clubs smaller than us don’t have our running costs. We are paying Championship wages on a League 2 income. These smaller clubs you mention are run a lot smaller than we are. But no, you just deny it….

You have mentioned our finances with Barclays a few times Vat. A bit naughty of whoever it is that works there that has said it as Stu says.

                            ———————

Personally, I have mixed feelings about the takeover. Whether people like Whelan or not (why you wouldn’t as a Latics fan is a mystery) he has put this club into a good position. Very limited debt (and all to him anyway), great facilities and punching well above our weight.

I don’t think he would sell to anyone, but how many foreign takeovers have worked over the years? These guys could come in and take us to the Prem and get back their investment immediately but then what happens? Do they take the money and run leaving us with high wage bills and no income? If we don’t make the Prem after they spend a pretty penny then will they just leave again leaving us with a high wage bill and no income? It’s a catch 22 I think. If they come in with the mentality of the guys at City and decide to build the club from the ground up then we could be in for another brilliant ride.
