bent and zamora were lower league players and perhaps ellington could be given a mention as well – didnt ian rush start at chester or wasnt john aldridge a bit of a journeyman at loer league clubs before liverpool signed him – teddy sherringham did the lower league apprenticeship and stan collymore learned how to use his feet down there (his perchant for using his hands beating women was probably a birth defect)
lots and lots of lower league players have made it before the easy boring route of cheap foreigners became the norm – now clubs are perhaps realising the foreign johnies are not all that they thought and are becoming more and more expensive for poor players
we may now all start giving lower league players the chance and encouragement to develop.
remember one thing we have to take chances on this type of player either from this country or abroad as it is the only way wigan athletic will survive in the big league.
LMB, you’re quite right in what you’re saying. The club do need to take a punt on players like this, and there are undoubtedly gems to be found, but we’ve already got people spouting of that he’s bound to be better than what we’ve presently got. Nothing’s certain, just like signing the top scorer in Argentina, only to find he struggles to adapt to the English game.

I’m very impressed with your post season positivity LMB.
I was in manc on sunday with my posh mates n they love him . All resigned to him leaving but if there is any truth in this give the lad a chance ffs
He will get a chance and hopefully he will do the business. IMO it just depends on who we keep, if we keep Hugo then I believe he will be ok as we can ease him in and give him time to adapt. If we sell Hugo and this lad is thrown straight in at the deep end then we deserve all we get.

i forgot to add in that first post that despite having to take chances on signings – martinez flew in the face of advice from john benson and went ahead and wasted 6 million on bosselli – so it cuts both ways take a chance to unearth a rough diamond but dont take unnecessary risks espeicially when someone who has more expertise in that area advises against it.
so dont go into raptures just yet – martinez has given both myself and many others from the darkside a little more belief in him, but he still has a long.,long way to go yet.

No better than a top ten finish in your book eh
thirtythree get someone to explain what everbody is talking about in future before you reply -then get that same person to explain to us all what on earth you are on about.
just because you have mates that are better off than us, why should their opinion of smith count more than us mere mortals ?
 Very good sir, very good.
you’ve spoiled it now standish that was a baited hook waiting for a gullable fish to swallow it :crying-yellow:
…and on that subject, a serious question.
I’m in Scotland (Solway Firth) for a few days soon with the family, and my four year lad has recently been introduced to fishing by my father in law.
He wants to fish in the sea – and I know jack (I’m sure that’s a type of fish) all about it.
He’s got his own rod that’s about 3 metres long, and all the rest of the stuff that goes with it.
So….
If we fish from the beach or rocks, do we have a chance of actually catching something?
What do we need to stick on the hook?
And as this is a football thread, do you think even Boselli could have got something in a net on the Solway Firth?
standish
the trouble with sea fishing is tackle has to be much stronger than normal run of the mill fishing tackle -i have thousands upon thousands of pounds worth of fishing equipment and to be honest none of it would stand up to the rigours of sea fishing –
i have a bit of adapted/stronger tackle that i use on the odd occasion i go – i would suggest you go into a tackle shop and take your rods and stuff and let them know where you are planning to go – and see if they can adapt what you have for your needs -the best bet that i can see is buy some mackerel feathers (about 1.50) and cast as far as you can off a pier or rocks and just reel in -you may catch an odd mackerel and boy they are about the best fish on the planet to eat when freshly caught -and they are begining to show up around the coast now.
have a look at this link there are plenty fish in the solway but most will take specialist bait and gear to catch.
