I actually understand were you are coming from on this, however it all boils down to what your expectation of a fan was and still is.

Most of us owd uns and maybe a few of the young uns who started watching the tics in the championship, will tell you that the thought of Wigan Athletic getting in the prem was “pie in the sky” stuff, when Whelan first said it.
The dream came true and for the first time since my dad died in the 1989, I actually cried like a baby, yip a forty odd year old bloke with face painted blue, blubbering in the West Stand then running on the field to hug the players, what a dipstick!. However, when I look back there were older geezers on sticks doing the same thing, you could feel, smell and taste the air of success and through sea of many strange faces you could pick out the old familiar faces, albeit a bit chubbier and balder than you remembered um at Springy.

Now at this point is were the foundation was built that would shape the views, opinions, between “darksider” and a “lightsider” that we have seen develop over the last few years.

I found it mind blowing that Wigan were in the prem. I got an away season ticket and watched every league game and every cup game in the first season, wearing my colours home and way often strutting like a turkey cock as I walked past the home fans, outside the likes of Highbury, Anfield, Old Trafford and Stamford bridge. In the majority of places the look back was similar to what a pishead gets when gate crashing a party, “little Wigan are taking the pish, little Wigan are taking the pish” did this mean anything to any other fans apart from Bolton, could the opposition fans actually make out what was being chanted by these blue and white gate crashers?
The thing that was in my mind at that time was enjoy it while it lasts mate, bin there done it got the t shirt, my feet were stuck well and truly on the ground.
Now that’s not being pessimistic in my mind, its being realistic, call it getting back down from cloud cuckoo land.

So as I said, this is the seed being planted for what we are witnessing now on this board, where the hell can Wigan go from 10th place in the EPL, throw in a major cup final un aw.

Expectations, expectations expectations. Set your sights at Whelans, “Wigan are going to get into Europe” rant, I’ve no problem with that at all but …. you’de better watch out…. bushak!!
Bleedin eck we are in a relegation battle and another, and another this team are shyte, Jewell has taken us as far as he can, no plan B, oh no who the fek is this Julius Agahowa geezer, bloody hell Roberts is off to blackburn, blackburn, yip blackburn, bloody rubbish Wigan, when will we get a fekin point off united, Bruce get your team going forward I’m not happy with a point, can’t beat fekin Blackpool at home, 9 goals, yip 9 goals conceded, martinez doesn’t know what hes doing, bring in a top manager Whelan yer tosspot, where’s our fekin Warchest?????

Now while all that’s going on,…. call it being pessimistic if you insist, or not setting my goals high enough, I’m actually quite pleased with 7 seasons in the prem. I have quite enjoyed the roller coaster rides, especially last season, which fekin wigan is going to turn up today!!. I have enjoyed watching players like Baines, Valencia, Palacios, Chimbonda and Bullard grow and nurture as Wigan players, knowing full well they will be off to dizzier heights as soon as they get some consistancy in their game. I fully expect the likes of McCarthy, Diame and Moses to do the same, if not this season, then next season or the season after.
I have and always will be a Latics fan, whether martinez or joe shyte is in charge. I will continue to do like most people do and rant to my mate coming home in the car after a defeat. Fekin passing game caught us out again, gifted um a bastad goal again, beaten by a poor sunderland team, not one shot on target FFS.
However, although I may have had the odd moan on here over the past 6.5 seasons, I will never go on a tirade against our manager or team. I have often said to my mate, its kll right for us to have a moan, but if I here any other fekker calling um, i’ll, i’ll……

This post is not meant to try and shift the dark to the light in any way shape or form. I’m just trying to explain how I and many others feel on here and why we get pished off with the constant hatred, yip its hatred, against Whelan, Bobby and certain players.
I do actually think bobby is trying to do things right, this has been proven in many games over the past couple of years, no matter what “most embarrassing game / score” people care to mention.
This season more than any we have outplayed the opposition only to concede a stupid give away goal, miss the 3 or 4 chances we had and get a diabolical decision from the officials call it excuses or what you want.
Martinez must be as frustrated as all of us the way many games have panned out, but good on him, he ain’t changing his philosophy and hopefully get the luck, the fox ion the box, the sturdy defender that his effort merits.

Anyway, that’s me done, I’m off to see if the admin will post this on the home page. ;)

Rodders are you an egg disguised as a Latics fan? Has it ever dawned on you that some stay-away fans may have a genuine reason for not going and that they would be at every game if they could? You dont half like gettin up peoples noses dont you?

I will keep going to the bitter end but I do know a few who have seen enough and got bored with it all, and I can understand why they have.
I am finding it harder and harder each season to drum up the enthusiasm.
Just aiming for 17th position each season and not being arsed about the Cup competitions is getting me down.
It wouldn’t be so bad if there was the odd club statement to let us know the powers that be were still interested and aiming to improve things, but they don’t seem bothered anymore.
Even in the dark days you felt that the club was at least aiming for better things even if surviving from week to week was a struggle and the best we really could hope for.
Everything seems to be a bit stagnant at the moment and the apathy we all have appears to be running all the way to the top.
I hope thing change soon as its a bit crap at the moment.

So immature you. People have reasons as to why they don’t go, Im 26 started going in 1993 and from about 1996 onwards i very rarely missed a game and probably went to quarter of aways in a season, Not just the north-west ones. It’s funny when you look at it. I loved every minute of getting to the Premiership, No doubt. Now we are here though and there is no ambition any more and no prospect of wanting to finish up the table its now boring. Obviously we cant get promoted any more and all our owner wants us to do is scrape 17th position expecting people to just accept it. That doesn’t appeal to me, I can get excitement watching or playing football on the amateur pitches for £250 less the cost. I don’t think a return of 2 or 3 home wins is worth £250. The love of football has gone now and it’s just an interest these days or something to watch in the pub. Funny how i must have paid thousands in the past to watch lower league football but now we are in the supposedly best league in the world i don’t find it fun or enjoyable any more.

Don’t spout to people like me zoggy, james, whoever you are. I have paid my way to watch good and crap, paid to go to the cup games when we wanted them. But now the club has given up wanting to win so have i.

Suppose you could say im a glory hunter but in reverse.

You claim to be 26 so in 1993 you would have been 6 or 7 ish even in 1996 which I assume is when you started going more regular you would still only be about 11, unless I am wrong i would have thought that during that period and the next 5/6 years or so your parents would have been the ones bearing the costs.

May I also assume that during that time unless you was some sort of child prodigy and deep thinker the last thing on your mind when going to games was the clubs predicament, also seeing that the last 7 years has been in the big time it means you was perhaps 19 on promotion, now forgive me but my maths isn’t what it once was, but that only leaves a window of 3 years or so that you bore the heavy financial burden of lower league dross that weighs on your shoulders now.

Sigh, Trust me, What i wrote was a very honest couple of paragraphs. No fiction in there. When i started going my auntie used to take me, I lived on Springfield Road then and before that i used to sit in my living room with my window open on match days watching BBC Teletext waiting to hear a roar from over the road, Then i used to go barmy around my room. I remember doing once it and legging it up stairs only to see Wigan 0-1 Preston on my ceefax when i got back :(

When i was about 11 me and a couple of mates discovered about 4 sneaking in places at Springfield Park, Was only ever caught once in about 2 years, And still they let us in. It was either that or when they had stewards covering our usual places we would stand in the trees at the away end. Got to 13 and i had 2 paper rounds, That gave me my entry money. When i was 14 i got a job standing on first avenue like a pleb selling golden ball tickets, and carried that on into the new stadium, I sold golden gamble for flash gordon too :P :P :P

        Thats how i went pre-earning

oh and in 93 i would be 8 or 9 depending on the time of season

Yosser you should have applied for a job to wear one of those white plastic trays filled with pop, crisps and chocolate bars round your waist. The money wasn`t good but you was always pitchside. You could have doubled up as a ballboy when you were behind the nets

I can appreciate your apathy Horc, there’s a couple of my mates who have jacked in going to any away matches and feel so negative about the club. I don’t go to all the away matches like I used to, perhaps a mixture of the long trips, shyte “stuck in a corner” views, poor results, games beamed into the comfort of your home, missing out on my Saturday night pish up, getting a bid long in the tooth etc etc , have all added to taking the easy option for trips that are farther than Blackburn going north, the midlands going south, scousers going west and well er nobody going east.

What I will say though is I really don’t think Martinez or Whelan are happy for just hitting 17th place. They have played some superb football this season and I know I keep repeating it but, they have not got the results that they have deserved in at least 4-5 games. with a bit of luck we could have been in the top 10 comfortably and I’ve not ruled that out yet.

As for the cup games, I honestly think his tactics of putting some new blood in is a good one and gives the likes of McManaman and Mustoe the chance to show if they can step up to the mark and take the challenge. As it happens these two players looked the best on show at Swindon. I was bitterly disappointed with the more senior pros who didn’t look like they were up for it at times.
I didn’t go due to my “Midlands South” reason, but knew very well that he would make changes. It would be great to get a good cup run, but getting knocked out got me wound up for half an hour or so, then I started looking towards the city game.
Lets all embrace a famous Wigan motto and “keep the faith”

We have had some pretty bad calls in games, but I don’t think we can keep using that as an excuse. So Sunderland shouldn’t have had a free kick for their first goal. What about the other three? How did they manage to score 4 goals despite having less chances and possession than us? How did Swindon have less of the ball than us yet create more chances? Things like that happen week in and week out.

If you want to think it was “because we’re shit and Roberto is a muppet” then fine, but I offer the alternative view that we had to open up a bit because we were chasing the game a goal behind, and that the perceived injustice of their first goal affects the mood of the players.
