‘the reason we dont put crosses is in the box is so we dont give the opposition a chance to win the ball back’

surely he cannot have said this, never in a million years – the only conclusion I can make is the person quoting this statement may well have had too many sherberts and is wildly mistaken / pissed

I wasn’t able to go myself, so maybe someone can answer thi sbetter than I can, but I suspect that was correct.

When we met with him a few months ago he was asked why we didn’t just go for it and hoof it forward when we’re losing by a single goal.

He replied that he wanted us to keep control and hoofing it forward loses that control. Now I don’t know exactly how he phrased it the other night but I suspect that is his thinking, but whether he meant that we should never put crosses in I doubt. I think he was putting forward his thinking that while we have control we have a chance to create something (I know, I know – you need to have the quality to do that) rather than leave it to Luck.

Probably he said something like that, but perhaps not quite as it seems, ie we will never cross the ball in.

What I heard was that somebody asked why there are times when Latics get a free kick & instead of putting the ball into the penalty area, Latics often pass the ball sideways/backwards & try to build from there.
Bobby replied that putting the ball into the box in those situations (one that occurs to me is during the City game at the DW in the first half & it created a bit of anger in the crowd at the time) gives your opponents an opportunity to win the ball back & he prefers to allow his team to retain possession in order to try & control the game & create chances as opposed to playing percentages

If that is what was said IMO it’s a load of garbage:
    a) all well & good in theory if you have top players but Latics don’t & a manager should realise that & cut his cloth accordingly
    b) in practice it just leads to more sideways & backwards passing, allows the opposition to get behind the ball & set out their stall & invariably Latics create nowt or make a mistake & give the ball away. yet still he persists with it

Disclaimer: before I start, this isn’t a pro Martinez post, and it isn’t blaming the negative crowd for Saturday’s defeat.

Yes, every club does have their fair share of ‘day trippers’.
Arsenal’s old guard supporters blame theirs on the additional seats becoming available when they moved to the Emirates; Blackburn blame it on Jack Walker’s money; I blame ours on the rapid climb to the Premier League – and as our average attendance has tripled over recent years, in my opinion, we have heck of a lot more than anyone else.

Put it this way – you’ve watched Latics for a good few years. Do you boo during a game? Do you groan or barrack whenever a player miscontrols a ball, or worse, before he’s even taken the corner/free kick? The ones I see boing at games and shouting abuse at the bench who sit near me have only appeared since promotion to the Premier League. If/when we are relegated, I’ll put money on them disappearing again.

Or maybe it’s a Wigan thing rather than just Wigan Athletic – as the Wigan Walk has been in circulation since at least the eighties when Central Park cleared in minutes if all was not going well. If you speak to any rugby supporter from neighbouring towns, they all regard Wiganers as the most fickle supporters in Rugby League.

And, maybe that’s why nobody protests, sings Martinez out, or unfurls banners. It’s the Wigan way to moan, groan, boo, then walk out, mumbling all the way home.

You’ve attempted to discredit what I was saying but have actually reinforced what I was saying.

Spectators are reactionary – and cheer, clap, chant when things in front of them are going well. They feed on the team’s performance.

Supporters create an atmosphere before the teams have even kicked off – so that the players can feed on them. We are seriously lacking in supporters.

At Wigan you get the initial ‘Come on Wigan’ as they kick off, then silence until someone cocks something up. On Saturday the drum wasn’t even there.

If you’re a player and all you can hear from your own fans is them booing one of your team mates, it’s hardly going to propel you onto better things.

Some of the people who know me at Latics will be laughing at that first question!!!!! In a moment I aint proud of I was the “season ticket holder” Paul Jewell was referring to in his post match interview after Sheff Utd away!!
I’ve been at games where some supporters moaning has seemed to be for moaning’s sake & I’ve had a go at them (United away in Latics first top flight season springs to mind) but at every game I’ve ever been to I have (to varying degrees) moaned, groaned or grumbled – I think some people round me thought I was having some kind of fit when Moses didn’t pass to Crusat against Everton!!!!! And that was kind of my initial point – I don’t think there is a club in the land where he wouldn’t have got stick from the crowd for that especially seeing as how he does it regularly
I agree that amongst the newer support you will probably find a larger proportion of the “openly” moaners & booers per head than you will possibly find amongst the old timers (per head) but I think its a pretty broad sweep to label them all as JCL’s – & to be fair even if they are JCL’s they are as entitled to boo & moan as someone who has been going for 60 years is entitled to continually cheer & applaud

Oh & as another point, I’m baffled as to why martinez thinks I should give a $h!t that 2 Swansea players were surprised that the atmosphere on Saturday was negative. As Swansea players they haven’t got a scooby doo about what has been going on at Wigan Athletic during Bobby’s reign (good or bad) nor should they have so why should I care that they thought it was negative (or positive for that matter)

What an absolute load of rubbish, so are you telling me if you have reached an age where dont feel a need to shout and cheer/sing songs and dont contribute to creating an atmosphere you are not a supporter, flaming hell most of the longest standing supporters we have occupy seats in the west stand and we have heard on this site more than once criticism of them.

One of the reasons I dont drink pre match is because I dont want to miss any of the action by having to go to the toilet, and it does my head in how little time some of the so called supporters, you mention actually see of the game, either arriving in their seats late, running to the bog every 3 minutes or going down to the concourse early because alcohol consumption seems to be more important that is one of the reasons we moved from the east stand back to the south, the other being that stupid drum you claim brings atmosphere, which was played by the most tone deaf drummer ever to pick one up.

We dont all behave the same in the stadium, how often do you see whelan or jonathon jackson up singing, but to say if you dont join in or help create an atmosphere is the same as the one you and the rest of the lightside do when accusing people who are anti martinez as not being supporters and to be honest is stupid and scraping the bottom of the excuse barrel.

You have also failed to answer the main point of what i said – when exactly did the booing or as martinez claimed, the negative attitude of the crowd which “surprised him”, actually start.

    #82664

I support the club away from the stadium, and voice my support on this forum, but I rarely sing or add much to create an atmosphere, so on matchdays I’d class myself as a spectator.

The extent of my support on matchdays tends to be applauding the teams on and off the pitch, applauding what I feel is a good tackle/pass/save/passage of play, and applauding substituted players leaving the pitch.

I resist the urge to shout insults at the players or bench, and I don’t boo players who are either playing or being substituted. If I chose to do this, would this be supporting the team?

Yes, you’re right, people do behave differently in a stadium, but there are far too many people in the stadium like me or you – well, maybe more like you when it’s raining or generally miserable.

I’ve taken a few people from out of town to matches and they’ve done the same as me – paid for a ticket, bought a drink and a programme, clapped when we’ve scored etc. Does that make them a Wigan supporter then?

In my opinion, we need more lads like the lad with the drum. (How the f@ck can you call him tone deaf? It’s a bass drum; it makes one tone. Do you mean he has no rhythm?) At least when he plays it people sing along.

Anyway, I’ve got a headache and can’t be bothered typing anymore. So, you win. You’re a supporter and a great one at that.

No, I haven’t answered your question regarding the booing, because if you check back, you actually answered it yourself.

Who gives a fuck, seriously, who? You cant wear down someone whos trained in dodging the question, so the alternative is to smack him one in the chops to vent your frustration. That however carries a custodial sentence. So whats the point in going to be smugged at?

Griff, nice to see you sat behind your keboard, whilst Not bothering going yourself……..

I’ve already had a session with Roberto, thanks Mitty. Plus, I’m not member of the Supporter’s Club. Better to leave all the available spaces to all those with genuine grievances to air.

Did you go? What did you ask him?
