7 March 2014 at 1:19 pm #128201I went to watch United at OT once and McGrath played the full 90 minutes. At the end of the game, I left sharpish as I wa smeeting someone in a pub in Sale to go some party or other. I made good time getting to the pub and when I walked in McGrath was already sat at the bar and was reportedly on his third pint.
You should read his autobiography – very dark.
I’m not normally a reader of autobiographies but as I rate him as the best defender I’ve ever seen play I picked up this one when it came out & you’re right it makes for very dark reading. His upbringing was hardly a bed of roses
Its frightening to think of the states that he used to play in & still play as well as he did & I think the club’s he was at have got to bare some responsibility coz because he was able to play so well despite hsi issues they just let him get on with it whereas I think they’d have done more if it had effected the way he played. There’s the story that he was so sloshed in one game that he wanted to come off & feigned an injury to get the physio on to tell him – the physio told him he couldn’t, he replied that he could see 2 of whichever player he was marking & teh response he got was “Well tackle both of them then”

7 March 2014 at 3:06 pm #128205During a conversation at our Thursday Night Football last week about my 5-4-Friday, we digressed to a Football XI of players known for addictions of some sort, or at least a very well documented liking for something they shouldn’t.
We came up with a decent team – if only you could keep them out of the pub/bookies/pharmacy!
GK – Peter Shilton
RB – Gary Charles
CB – Tony Adams
CB – Paul McGrath
LB – Kenny SansomRM – Paul Merson
CM – Bryan Robson
CM – Paul Gascoigne
LM – George BestFW – Diego Maradona
FW – Jimmy GreavesManager – Brian Clough/Howard Kendall
Any improvements?
Apart from a quite ridiculous suggestion of Alex Ferguson, nobody has managed to come up with anyone that we hadn’t already considered. However, I should probably have pointed out that selection for the team was based on a vague formula comprising a combination of quality of player and level/notoriety of alleged addictedness. That’s why Roy Carroll/Warren Aspinall were considered, for example, but were ultimately rejected in favour of better players.[/quote]

7 March 2014 at 3:22 pm #128207Garrincha spent the majority of his wealth on alcohol and extravagant luxuries. At just 49 he died of cirrhosis of the liver.
George Best died in hospital aged 59 after multiple organ failure.
Garrincha was the quicker.

Do you ever wonder why people turn away from this site.

Spot on observation there edinburghlatic. Maybe his closing line should have read: Right this is our defining team, don’t bother with adding to it as we’ve made our mind up that there can be no changes because I/we know best for everbody. After all it’s only a bit of fun, my fun. And he was doing ok for a couple of days as well. Leopard and spots comes to mind.
7 March 2014 at 7:34 pm #128213Manager has to be Alex Ferguson…I thought edinburghlatic was upset that Griff didn’t accept his suggestion. But what is Sir Alex addicted to? Success perhaps?

Of course it’s only a bit of fun. Nowhere was I suggesting that “there can be no changes”. What drugs are you on? So, yet again you have spectactularly misunderstood what I was saying. Perhaps it’s best if you stop responding to my posts if you can’t understand them.
“And he was doing ok for a couple of days”? Who do you think you are, you arrogant get?! You seriously think I have ‘changed’ under pressure from you? Give your head a shake.
Barnsley has aleready pointed out why I think that Alex Ferguson was a ‘ridiculous’ suggestion. I’ll patiently await your ‘but I was only winding you up” post once it sinks in how you have made yourslef look like a chump. Very angry, all you old men aren’t you?

Calm down lad, you know that all that stress is not good for your cholesterol levels. You’ll do yourself an injury. I do like the idea that you rolled out the ‘good old drugs’ reference (makes you sound grown up that does) and it is only your arrogance that says that I ‘spectacularly misunderstood’ because I didn’t.
Don’t flatter yourself that anyone cares about your demeanour, you were (look I’ve done bold lettering) doing ok for a couple of days.
Your crappy defence to think that I would respond with the ‘I was just winding you up’ response again shows you to be the chump here lad.
Grow up will ya, and seriously watch them blood vessels, you are the only one here to get so angry about any post that does not go your way. Have a wee think about it, missus was right you know, I bet you were bullied at school.
7 March 2014 at 8:13 pm #128217Not interested lad, go away
7 March 2014 at 8:30 pm #128219Play nice then.

Maybe I can let you in a secret, the former man utd manager was into drinking…. which could possible qualify as a suggestion for manager… there I’ve said it…
As for Griffs response, am sure he knows how pathetic those responses are and how they wont encourage people to contribute on this site. But I doubt many people dont know that.

I believe Sir Alex likes a glass of red wine, but is he really addicted to it?
He’s not a candidate for manager in my eyes. But, then, I haven’t been out on the town with him. Others may know him better.
He can hardly compare with Brian Clough; “In January 2003, the 67-year-old Clough underwent a liver transplant; 30 years of heavy drinking had taken its toll.”
