Many years ago, unknown to my father, my elder brother obtained an apprenticeship as an electrician in a local colliery. When my father found out he said nothing but the next day, when my brother was about to set off for work, he gave him a letter to hand to his boss. It was his notice!! He told him that no son of his would “go down the mine”.

Note: My father was a miner, as was his father and grandfather but he would have been glad to see the mines closed for good. Thanks to his guidance I obtained a job with a better life expectancy, as did my own son. Coal mines belonged to a bygone time and Margaret Thatcher was right to close them even if her motives were dubious.

Bickershaw Colliery at it’s height had 1700 emplyees that came through out the area as far as St Helens and Bowton when it closed in 1992 the number had diminshed a lot down to around 700/800 around that pit was a small community ,You had a few pubs a butchers newsagent post office working mens clubs ,labour clubs you get the picture

Not only Bickershaw but Leigh and Golborne where totally decimated when the pit shut down have a ride through Golborne town center now the place has seen better times full of takeaway places ,betting shops and ASDA

there has been no money thrown into Golborne since that pit shut ,Parsonage is now a retail park if you can call ASDA and Sainsburys a retail park and Bickershaw is just getting investment after 22 years since that pit shut

You used to know your next door neighbours in them times you felt part of the community not now things just arn’t the same

You’re a liar, anyone who gained craft apprenticeship(sparks, fitters, instrument mechs) for the NCB went through a rigorous selection process and signed indentures with their parents present, so what you say was immpossible.

Maybe that is why the likes of Germany are thriving due to keeping there heavy industries to drag them out of the global banking fook up

First of all let me state that my father was a miner who died a slow lingering death at the age of sixty after ten years of suffering. I must also add that I have never voted Tory in my life but my views differ somewhat to those stated above.

In the 70s life for the working man was pretty good if you happened to be a Miner, Docker or Car Worker but the rest of society had to cope with high interest rates, galloping inflation and pay rises which were a fraction of the aforementioned. We also had to cope with power cuts; short time working; rat infested, rubbish strewn streets and unburied dead. It would appear that some people are either too young to know or have selective/short memories.

Trade Unions were so powerful that they actually brought down a democratically elected government and we lived in a state of virtual anarchy where strikes were the order of the day.

For all Margaret Thatcher’s failings (and there were many) she was the only politician of the day who had the guts to stand up to the Union bully-boys who were bringing this country to it’s knees.

If the coal mines were still open, would the above posters want their offspring to “go down the mine”? Would the above posters want to buy Rover cars if the factory had not been mercifully closed?

You are the one with the selective/short memory, with your Daily Mail Tory version of what actually went on.

To add , if it is called for a minutes silence prob best to do it for the club name but i would suggest every maggie hater to simply turn their backs as a way of showing their true feelings to her. and show what the northerners felt about her

Have a listen to yourselves guys, you have the humanity of Rudolph Hess. The spite that you accuse her of is just as prevalent in your own posts – it’s like looking in a mirror.

The truth of the matter is that during the seventies and since time immemorial the moderates of this world have been held to ransom by the ultra lefties on one side and the ultra right wing on the other. You would all consider yourselves to be moderates, but just read back through your posts.

Loudmouth – true to form you jump in with both feet, without the full facts, and make vile insulting accusations. Strong mouthwash wouldn’t go amiss along with a reading of the real history of the miners strike – not the Arthur Scargill version. The one fact that you can’t dispute is that the unions brought down a democratically elected government meaning we were living under mob rule, a mob espousing views just like your own and others above.

United and City didn’t have a minute’s silence on Monday.

However City did send an Argentine sub in the second half.

Can you explain to me this :- “a mob espousing views just like your own and others above

Just what are my views ?

I suggest you look back at all these posts, I have not made one comment on thatcher other than to say that myself and my family would not observe any tribute to this woman. I also asked how can anyone show respect for a person who showed no respect for the working class of this country, which is a belief shared by millions of working people of that time.

The only insulting allegation I made was agianst you, and I maintain that allegation – YOU ARE A LIAR – you claim that your brother got an electrical apprenticeship at a local mine without your fathers knowledge, this is bullshit and both you and I know it, but why let that along with the other crap you spouted get in the way of true facts.

If you would like to discuss some facts about politics of that era you have dropped on the right person, how the Tory party and its manipulated press lackies have always pushed out the propoganda that the unions brought down the Heath goverment in 74, when in fact it was his own right wing that back stabbed him, might I add like Thatcher’s own cabinet back stabbing her.

Google the ‘Selsdon group’ and the ‘Ridley Plan’ if you want a true picture of the plans the Tories put in place for the next Thatcher goverment, the catalyst to impliment them was the destruction of the mining industry of this country without regard for future energy production or people it effected because they knew it would get the reaction it did.

when any government shytes on its own people , to benefit the wealthy it needs bringing down
take note privatization of gas elec water bt
we where all doing fine low prices affordable
then with privatization higher gas higher electri higher water rates and now owned by foreign coompanys
ffcks under state control we the people owned them
thats why this day and age the southern tory lib government have to tax us more ,because there is nothing coming in to thhe coffers like when state owned the utilities
it all goes back to thatcher helping the few over the many her favourites saying

A PRICE WORTH PAYING and now we all are except millionaire’s even whelan received 100,000 tax cut last week at the expense of the sick and poor who are seeing money stolen by elected thieves

What a nasty piece of work you are Loudmouth, there is obviously little point in arguing the case. I would have little difficulty in explaining the situation regarding my brother’s apprenticeship but I wouldn’t waste my breath on such a narrow minded bigot as yourself who thinks he knows the answer before the question is asked.

PS I know you regard yourself as something of a scholar but when you write:

“The only insulting allegation I made was agianst you, and I maintain that allegation – YOU ARE A LIAR”

Is not only insulting but grammatically incorrect “YOU ARE A LIAR” is not an allegation but a statement of fact. You don’t know me or the circumstances and It shows you to be exactly what you accuse Margaret Thatcher of being – a self-righteous bully-boy. The Unions of the seventies were a disgrace to the memory of the Tolpuddle Martyrs (to whom we all owe so much) so don’t even try to align the two.

PS I don’t know why I allowed myself to be involved in this pathetic argument but rest assured this is my last word on the subject

And when he gets his arse properly handed to him, he claims his Internet is conveniently broken, there’s ways of having an opinion and debating them, unfortunately LMB chooses to be downright disrespectful and rude to one of the few posters that have a valid view and a lucid and reasonable way of airing it.

As it goes Owd Git, I did a ‘proper’ apprenticeship and was indentured, my parents had nothing to do with it, might be different at a colliery, or through the NCB, but nobody said your brothers was through the NCB, I have no reason to think you’re a liar, and nor should anyone else.
