I couldn’t care less what the media or fans of other clubs think about us. TBH I prefer being hated. As a Wigan rugby fan you get used to it.
Yes but the rugby team are hated for their success.
We will be hated for demonstrating what an insular little club we are, and whose chairman – basically, the figurehead of the club – supports racist views.
He may have apologised, but the damange has been done no matter how much back-tracking and grovelling he’s conducting throught the press.
It’s hard enough attracting sponsors to the club without Mr Whelan’s comments. Now they are withdrawing their support.
I’m sure a lot of people have thought the things Mr Whelan said, but that’s they are not the sort of things to be said to the national media.
I’ve supported Whelan in the past and been one of his biggest defenders, but this time he has overstepped the mark and his comments are going to cost the club money, supporters, and reputation.[/quote]
So are you going tomorrow ?

Of course I’m going. But how many new fans, sponsors, potential investors etc. will be rubbing their hands together and thinking ‘I fancy getting involved with Wigan Athletic’?
21 November 2014 at 2:27 pm #135888I have heard that Prince Philip has shown an interest in taking over the club!
21 November 2014 at 2:44 pm #135898Whelan is old school and set in his ways which isn’t a crime in my view! Loads of people of that ilk still say ‘Chinky’ instead of Chinese when talking about Chinese takeaways, I know I do! Loads of folk still refer to Jewish people being careful with money, why is that offensive? I have told a few ‘Jewish’ jokes over the years! There is an issue with the homophobic and racist remarks though that cannot simply be brushed under the carpet. The FA should make a decision on what they are going to do and quickly, then we can get on with the game of football!Because the “Jews” and the “Chinks” find it offensive, that’s why!!!
Listen, I’m no PC prude and I use that kind of language all the time. But I am not the public face of a major public institution whose every word is analysed and pulled to pieces.
I really have no issue with me, you or him saying these things in the privacy of his own home but he surely needs to realise that – whether we like it or not – society no longer deems that kind of language/attitude to be acceptable.

Privacy – it doesn’t exist; ask Malky, his texts are a private non verbal conversation.

I believe Malky was using a company phone. If so, his texts weren’t private and were the property of his company.

When you’re in a high profile position you need to watch what you do and say more so than the likes of me and you.

Or consult with the f’ing Head Of Communications who will advise on what to say to the club.No other Chairman in Britain would spout off to press on a sensitive matter without talking some advice first.
21 November 2014 at 3:16 pm #135909Just go to BBC Sport website and read the full transcript of Whelan’s interview with journalist David Ornstein. Lazy journalism in it’s purest form. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story! in future Dave should be employing a Fergie like silence towards the media.
21 November 2014 at 3:22 pm #135914Whelan should have just kept quiet. All he has done is just inflamed the issue . It’s really the last thing Malky Mckay needed at this time. We need to get back to playing football and climbing the table. Too often he makes a rod for his own back by having to comment when it’s just not needed

Anyway, good goal against the Geordies ( hope that’s PC )21 November 2014 at 3:25 pm #135916Whelan is old school and set in his ways which isn’t a crime in my view! Correct, but who mentioned texts? I said “privacy of his own home”. Now, they may do things differently in Wrightington but in Ashton, we have real conversations as a family. We don’t actually text each other

Can we not call the Scots tight gets anymore either? I have never come across a Jew who is offended by someone implying that they are careful with their money and I have mentioned it to a few trust me! What a load of bollocks! Now the hissing coming from ES2 against Spurs, now that is a different matter! ;)

You might do that in your house in Ashton but in my house in Ashton (Well Bryn actually) I’m regularly texting family, ‘get me a beer from the fridge’ etc
21 November 2014 at 5:47 pm #135932I think the embarrassment comes from the situation this has created and now engulfs the club rather than what was said.I think we need to get some press releases out like this one. I have a feeling Boycey is on a damage limitation exercise of his own.
Exactly Tez – that’s what I was referring do in my drunken late night vent. It’s not what Malky sent by text nor what DW said about Jews that bothers me, but the context in which all of this had taken place and the bad light it’s now shining on the club.
With Coyle and Rolser he made snap decisions on managers and in IMO has done the same with Malky. I think he will be good for the team, but all the baggage he’s coming with is massively unhelpful and DW just added fuel to the fire.He didn’t look at the bigger picture.
Of course I’m not innocent of being slightly racist/homophobic/sexist/ageist whatever. But when I do lapse it’s not in the public eye nor as a role model to all ages, creeds, colours, faith, sexes and sexual orientations.
If he’d just said MM is the best man to get Wigan promoted and anything else is a private matter for MM and the club to deal with that would’ve been fine.
