Tonights performance was possibly the wort I have ever seen Wigan Athletic play, and I have been watching the Latics for nearly 50 years. In fact I will go so far as to say that it was an utter disgrace. I suggest you go to the chairman and tell him to open his wallet and spend big time because if he doesn’t you will be managing a Championship team next season.
19 August 2009 at 1:56 am #5488Worst performance in fifty years? Get out. Overreact much?
We were playing a side that came to defend and did so well. It was perhaps tactical naivety thinking that we could pass through them, but it certainly wasn’t the worst performance in the past year, let alone fifty.
And we don’t need to spend big, we just need the right type of player – a good passer of the ball in the middle of midfield.
19 August 2009 at 1:59 am #5491Sorry Prescott but you must have been watching a differnt game than me. It was utter rubbish. If the chairman doesn’t get the right type of player in, and to do that he will have to spend some serious money then it is relegation. The sooner he sells the club to someone who is prepared to take it seriously the better. I was there before Whelan and will be there after him.
19 August 2009 at 2:04 am #5492But as I pointed out in another post, we were equally as good satdy as we were bad tonight. Bobby needs to learn quickly that teams like wolves, burnley, stoke, birmingham, etc. will close us down for 90 mins, that exactly the game plan that has kept us in the prem for 5 seasons.
The only way to beat it is up the tempo, this passing across the backline at snails pace just allows their midfield to sit back and wait for the mistake and it came time and time again, mostly in the form of a huge boot into touch from bramble. Our passing at Villa was much slicker and quicker but to be fair villa gave us the space and time to do that.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!19 August 2009 at 2:06 am #5493It’s not about spending money.
We do need a centre midfielder, I’ll admit that, but we could quite have easily played 4-5-1 like Wolves and nullified all our chances of going for a win by settling for a point and hoping that we grabbed a goal from somewhere – which is what we would have done under previous regimes. But instead, Martinez set us out to have four men committed to getting forward and creating what they could and, well, it didn’t work, but that’s not necessarily down to a lack of quality.
We need somobody to drop deeper and recieve the ball from Bramble and Scharner, otherwise they will have to resort to just knocking it about amongst themselves. Neither Brown or Thomas did that and when Gómez did he was followed by David Edwards.
19 August 2009 at 2:10 am #5494It is obvious that Martinez lacks the necessary experience of how to play against teams such as Wolves. Hope he learns quickly. If he doesn’t and I was his boss he would be on the dole very quickly. If I continued to make such blazing mistakes at work I would get the sack and why should it be any different for him.
19 August 2009 at 2:18 am #5500Didn’t he play against Wolves with Swansea only last season??
19 August 2009 at 2:21 am #5502Didn’t he play against Wolves with Swansea only last season??Beat them 3-1 at the Liberty Stadium too.
19 August 2009 at 2:25 am #5504Yes he was in charge of Swansea when they played Wolves, so that makes tonights rubbish even worse as he should have known how Wolves play. Obviously he has very little experience in knowing how to manage a premier league club. I have my doubts about his suitability as manager. Whelan was spouting about him on Sky Sports over the weekend saying that he will be one of the top four managers in the country. Well not on tonigts performance. Whelan its time you kept your gob shut!

Against a decent side that scored from a set piece early on and then put ten men behind the ball.
Let’s not forget that we are WIGAN. How can losing a Premiership game against Wolves cause so much outrage? We’re by no means the finished article yet.

Who in their right mind would buy Wigan other than another multi-millionaire Wiganner? (And there aint many of them about) Do you think a foreign owner would take it more seriously than Whelan?
Get a grip. It was a bad performance. Every team has them.
19 August 2009 at 2:39 am #5512The thing that frightened me the most tonight was just how many headers we lost hence, the goal.
Absolute 110% credit to McCarthy and his team who did exactly what he said of them which was to close us down all over the park and play it high.
It really wouldnt surprise me if we lost by more goals against a team like Stoke than Man U purely down to aggression and aerial bombardment.
The stroking it across the back four time and time again said it all for me tonight – no plan B.

I have got more Wigan Athletic blood in me and more passion for the Latics than Whelan and many others who write on this message board so why should I tolerate such a poor performance. I use hard earned money to support my team and I deserve better than that. If I was as bad as that team tonight then I would be unemployed.

With employment law you would have had a verbal warning first.
