Listen mate, I don’t do all these modern ‘trendy’ comedians, such as Man-fat, Jimmy Carr (funny as dogmuck), and all them. They aren’t funny.
All this ‘new style’ comedy is a load of rubbish.
Racist, alcoholic, wife-beaters are seldom construed as comedic genius, unless of course it’s just good old Jim Davidson. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a square, and have nothing against playing with people’s sensitivities for comedic purposes and certain people do it well, such as Gervais, but he has the intelligence to do it with taste and subtlety rather than being a Manning mkII.
And ‘new-style’ comedy? It’s much the same you know, just less making formulaic jokes about stereotypes. Davidson panders to morons, largely because he’s one himself.
I did like Big Break though.
And the following thread renders your views on comedy void:

Racist, alcoholic wife beaters could be applied to anyone…..George Best….Gazza……Abu Hamza…….your feckin next door neighbour.
I’m not getting you wrong ….you are indeed a square. Gervais is as funny as a kick in the nuts (and bad teeth to boot). I watched his stand up (at the insistance of my son) and concluded that he is indeed a t1t. Frankie Boyle, Lee Mack, even McIntyre (and don’t get me started on the Spanish Inquisition) are funnier than the current nouveau pseudo pollitically incorrect university dropouts we currently have to suffer. Mitchell and Webb……..BBC1 after 11pm WTF is that all about.
You strike me as the type of person that laughs at people falling over in programmes like ‘you’ve been framed’
Very slapstick…………….. :?

I have a Monty Python avatar, which highlights what I laugh at: intelligent wit.
I’m done arguing about Davidson. The kind of person that thinks he’s funny is the very same type that will not succumb to reasonable argument.

18 May 2010 at 3:02 am #33840He was good. Didn’t pull any punches.Shame he didn’t afford the same to his wife.
In all honesty though one of the greatest comedians must be Billy Connelly. And when Gervais did his stand-up was also superb.
I would also say that when Boyle was in his pomp on ‘Mock the Week’ he was brilliant along with the other fella who’s name escapes me. Blond fella…Russell Howard is it :?: Not sure. Just the speed of their retorts were class in itself.

think Ricky Gervais is awful, just cannot stand him.
Have to agree with Frannkie Boyle, incredibly funny. Not keen on Russel Howard himself (Yeah he is the blonde one).. But the show he doesn ‘Good news with Russell Howard’ is really funny, but at stand up I am not too keen. :)

Never actually seen his stand-up so i’m just going off his appearances on ‘Mock the Week’, for me they were both as good as each other.
I’d also say that if you haven’t watched Gervais in stand-up (especially animals), watch it, because it’s class, but each to their own and all that. Tis good though.
18 May 2010 at 3:54 am #33853Well I like Russell Howard but didn’t find his stand up anything special compared to the likes of Lee Evans and Jimmy Carr.
Never had the patience to watch Ricky Gervais stand up as I don’t like the bloke (Really don’t know why, just irritates me I think) :D , but is unfair to judge him when I haven’t seen his stand up so I am going to give it a try pal ;)
18 May 2010 at 2:49 pm #33882I didn’t like Frankie Boyle’s stand up. It was just like a collection of things that he’s said on Mock the Week. He was fantastic on that programme though.
“Do you reckon that Emile Heskey just holds the ball up when he plays in his back-garden? Whilst his neighbour leans over the fence yelling ‘Booooo!!'” – Best thing he has come out with.
Gervais is excellent, James. He’s done four stand-ups now and they’ve all been bang on – I went watching the last two in Blackpool and I haven’t laughed as much in all my life. He was supported by Stewart Francis for ‘Science’ too, who was equally as funny.

If you liked him in mock the week and he does the same in stand up…Why don’t you like his stand up? Or was it that you was disappointed that he only did the same things?
Like I said I am going to give Ricky Gervais’ stand up a try :)

I don’t like Gervais either, I couldn’t get into the UK Office because of him, yet think the US version is quite possibly the best sitcom on TV at the moment.
