Don’t get me wrong I wouldn’t endorse shooting anyone for getting it wrong and although I might buy one I rarely wear one. However, fans like to wear a new shirt on their summer holiday and football fans like to go on holiday before the season starts.

They have brought new kit out before the end of the previous season in the past so I’m sure it’s just been down to the Vandanel problems etc. Would have preferred Nike meself generally classier but will reserve judgement till I see what it’s like

Good evening all, after lurking for a while I’ve decided to make my posting debut on this thread…

Unlike others I do know about Marketing as I’ve made a rather successful career and sideline business from it.

The challenge that I see here is that the club will have had to negotiate its new “technical” supplier contract following the demise of Vandarel. I don’t know whether the new supplier is a Whelan owned business (haven’t checked) but let’s assume it isn’t. He would still be ensuring that the commercials of the deal suit Wigan Athletic in terms of what they are providing for the club, the range available for supporters to purchase and more importantly the profit the club makes from those purchases.

These things take time to do, there will have also been an element of shopping around too. While Marketing plays its part in these negotiations to ensure the new supplier gives it the best opportunity to have a product to market, often in smaller businesses like Wigan Athletic (compared to more commercially focused clubs) Marketing are told what is agreed and then have to formulate their marketing plan afterwards. Therefore, I’m not sure that if they hadn’t already been considering a new kit supplier they would have been able to work much faster than now. Especially as another poster said you have to consider, manufacturing and distribution of sufficient stock for retail.

Timing wise, I don’t think the club will have lost out on too much revenue from the delay. Those people who didn’t get one for their holiday will still probably buy one. However, at the point where many are undecided on whether to purchase a season ticket, the additional cost of a replica kit could negatively impact on that decision, so in the same way every other business does, best to hit you up for more cash once you’ve already made a purchase.

      Just my tuppence worth like

”The longer the club has the kit out for, the more money they make”

I’d disagree – the people who buy replica shirts for either themselves or their kids are going to buy them regardless of whether they come out on May 10th or August 15th.
I’d hazard a guess that Latics can guess pretty acurately how many replica shirts they will sell & I doubt the date of its release makes any difference to that amount

Absolutely spot on in my book Tyldesley.

Football clubs may sell a high proportion of their shirts before summer holidays and at Christmas, but I suspect that applies to Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, Milan, etc. Basically, it’s teams who have an army of armchair supporters and who might buy a replica shirt on a whim. Few of the casual football fans will choose to buy a Wigan Athletic shirt.

99% of Wigan shirts will be bought by Wigan Athletic supporters, and those who buy the new shirt will always want the new shirt no matter when it comes out.

In fact, few of the usual rules applied to football clubs or supporters ever apply to Wigan Athlatic.
