I think that is the castle at the side of Rivington ressy, part of the Lord Leverhulme follies same as the Chinese gardens half way up the Pike.
If it is we used to get the bus to Horwich when we were kids and go and play ‘army’ firing metal staples(not paper staples-the bent nail type) at one another with elastic bands off your thumb and fore finger – by heck they didn’t half hurt when the hit.
Not been there for 40+ years
edit
can I add, at the side of Lower Rivington Reservoir.

6 March 2014 at 1:44 am #128134Looking at the terrain I would say its in the plantations somewhere, there are lots of stone structures in there that you come across that look like they were 18th century cottage industry remains, there are also quite a few very small quarries.
Looking at the curved stones it looks like the remains of an ornamental pond, could it be a stew pond ?
edit
on second look is it something to do with forestry management, ie a base for a charcoal kiln.
6 March 2014 at 2:13 am #128135Very good Darren, it’s in Haigh Hall estate woods. I did try and find out what it was, there are the remains of some sort of building next to it. Best I can find out is that it is some sort of ornamental fish pond.
A couple from the Ribble to be going on with. Nice place to spend long summer nights even when the fish are not biting.
But sometimes they are.
6 March 2014 at 2:57 am #128137Pennington Flash ? As for the River Yarrow shot, why would I be mooching around that neck of the woods when I live in Leyland ?
6 March 2014 at 3:10 am #128139are they albert or ribchester waters, long time since I have been on the ribble,
look at this an internet search came up with, this picture was taken in 1968 before the building was demolished, I think its the foundations that are left in your photo.
