Griff – Unfortunately for Gomez he a) isn’t good enough for this level & b) doesn’t have that all-action, battling aspect to his game that would help make up for that lack of ability & which would endear him to the Latics faithful as it has with others down the years (Bomber Roberts, McCulloch etc)

What is also true is that today’s team isn’t full of McCullochs and Bombers either, so to pick out Gomez and Scotland (as our original poster did) as the root of all evil in this respect is slightly unfair too.
4 May 2010 at 5:25 pm #31763How can you expect Stojkovic to come in every blue moon and have a blinder. The lad doesnt speak a word of english and isnt getting a fair chance. No one slated Rodallega when he didnt score for donkeys and he played every game until he chalked his first one. I see most of the fans slating him are the same ones who were slating Diame at christmas time

:D  i can4 May 2010 at 6:27 pm #31776To be fair to Bomber Griff I remember him scoring an absolute screamer of a volley at home to Stockport once!!!
Also, the fact that during a game he can pick out one good pass & attempt a volley doesn’t really (in my book at least) make up for the many failings he has in his game at this level.
I get your general point but I’d also agree with No1’s point earlier in the thread that when Scotland and/or Gomez play we look a poorer side – or if you’re on the dark side like me an even poorer side!! ;)
In response to Yosser, I don’t think anyone is expecting Stojkovic to come in & have a blinder but he makes so many fundamental errors that i think it has little to do with his lack of match practice. Nor can I see how his inability to speak English transforms itself into a preference for attempting to punch any ball that comes close to him as opposed to catching the freaking thing

But I take the point that they aren’t good enough, generally.
As for Stoikovich – well, it beggars belief that this guy is am international goalkeeper.
4 May 2010 at 7:26 pm #31788According to Wikipedia, what else beggars belief is that FC Nantes parted with a (rumoured) 3m Euros for him in 2006.
And he’s 6’5 apparently. Looks about 5’9 tops to me.
Is this the worst case of a some ordinary bod charading as a pro footballer since Julius Aghahowa darkened our doorstep?

I read that as you saying he was 65
Maybe explains a lot.
4 May 2010 at 8:15 pm #31815Not sure if he’s better than that Taibi bloke, who Unted had. In fact, I don’t think he is.
GRIFF- yes, he’s in net for Serbia….and their first game is against Ghana, who will have Richard Kingson in goal. Bit of interest for Latics fans, there.
I’ve heard Serbia talked about as a possible surprise package. If so, they’d better have a bloody good defence. I know that Nemanja Vidic is part of it, but they best be bloody good with him in net, deary me. :D
4 May 2010 at 8:19 pm #31816They also have Branislav Ivanovic from Chelsea, might just make up for their appalling keeper.
4 May 2010 at 8:31 pm #31818Gomez can do things other players can’t, the frustration comes from the fact he doesn’t apply himself, or have the work rate to become a top player.
It’s the simple passes that go astray, the lack of runs going forward, and the non-existent tracking back that puts a downer on his game.
He isn’t a 35 year old veteran, he could be running the midfield alongside McCarthy and Diame, instead he looks completely off the pace.
4 May 2010 at 9:59 pm #31832My major complaint about Gomez is that he’s a bit light-weight – doesn’t go in for challenges – knocked off the ball easily.
Get some lobby down him over Summer and he’ll be fine. ;)
4 May 2010 at 10:04 pm #31834What’s happened to Kingson btw? How can he be 4th choice behind both Stojković and Pollitt?
