Charlie the best player on the field by a mile, but how long before he loses his enthusiasm?
How long before he decides to pass to someone rather than constantly running into people before losing the ball?

Man of the match my @rse. We have an Emporer’s New Clothes situation developing here.

Zat Knight was MOM by a mile. Mind you, we made it easy for him.

They never give the MOM award to an away player – ever. As well you know.

Out of the Latics players, N’Zogbia was the only one on the pitch with any sort of creative spark, with the possible exception of McCarthy.
His final decision making undoubtebly needs to improve but then again I said the same thing about Valencia the entire time he was here & we flogged him for £16mill & he’s doing alreet for himself at United

On the subject of Bobby’s comments – if he was proud of that performance then he wants sacking. Immediately. I suspect however that he was less than pleased with the performance but is one of them managers who will not criticise his players in public. Unlike say a Paul Jewell who was very vocal in his criticisms and then used to pick the exact same players for the next game (for us & Derby).
Bobby’s approach is feckin annoying & it leads you to question his judgement but I can see the reason behind his thinking if indeed he is using it as a smokescreen to protect & encourage his players

once again blame is being put at the feet of anywhere but the true culprit-was the pitch to blame for givig the ball away time and time again-as with stoke last week bolton never made a tackle in the second half because we just keep giving the ball away.

And by the same token, did the Spanish One personally give the ball away. Do you think he specifically instructs them to give the ball away?

Don’t bother answering that, you probably do.

This beautiful passing game I keep hearing about. Is that the one when we stroke the ball from left to right then back again( or vice versa ) several times deep in our own half, while the opposition waits patiently for us to mount an attack, that due to certain players being bereft of ideas at the business end will ultimately end in nothing !!

That’s only because, as you point out, we aren’t very good at it. I saw the alternative at times last night whereby we hoof the ball long and it runs straight out of play for a corner or goal-kick.

Equally unproductive but easy on the neck muscles watching it. conversely, it must be better for the pitch

#23000

Ah Loudmouth, I very nearly made a reference to you, as you have claimed they play hoof ball, and tonight, you were right, they did.

I have never blamed anything for past performances – but have merely stuck up for Martinez’s belief in passing along the floor – which you say is a myth. I’ve also disagreed with you in the past as you say they pass the ball across the back too much and should ‘bang’ it up the middle.

I presume by ‘the true culprit’ you mean Martinez? I’m sorry, maybe my eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be, but what position did Martinez play tonight? Clearly it was his control that let the side down, or maybe his passing was wayward.

I wasn’t attributing a poor performance to the pitch, I was blaming the pitch for a poor spectacle. If each time you try to pass the thing along the floor it bobbles and bounces along, comes off your shin, or slices off the side of your foot, what are you going to do? Trap it, then hoof it, that’s what.

Can you honestly say that that pitch is suitable for pretty, passing football?

You may not like ‘the Spanish One’, but you can’t possibly maintain that the state of the pitch had no bearing on the style of football witnessed tonight.

find me one place where i have ever said “we should bang it up the middle”

i want to see good passing football and despite what the supporters of martinez say on message boards we havent seen anything like the amount you claim, and like tonight much of it has been pretty dire and boring .
I don’t usually make a habit of bringing up old posts to prove a point, but here’s an old post to prove a point…

Under the thread ‘Martinez – Clueless Again’, you said:

‘the football we play is worse than any we have played in the premiership….it is littered with long ball mediocrity, but now they tend to be cross field punts as opposed to the banging it to a target man as bruce tended to use at times, one thing if you knock it up to a target man it doesnt tend to go straight into touch-like it does 5 or 6 times a game under the spanish one’

So, in essence, bang it up the middle to a target man. Granted you have not mentioned the word ‘middle’ but unless the target man tends to loiter about on the touchline, it more than likely going up the middle.

And, before I’m given any derogatory names, it only took a couple of minutes to find that particular comment.

Martinez can be pleased as a couple of months ago, we would have been beaten. We are looking strong at the back….Caldwell has to be one of the best value signings we have made. Top player.

Last night were two teams who should be playing better and should be further up the league but were stubborn to loose points…simples.

I don’t get some people on here – we should be beating notlob 30 – 0 and win the premiership. When will people realise that we are punching above our weight. Any finish between 12th and 16th is a good season for us and once in a while, we may finish in the top 10…but that would be an excellent season.

I really believe that Martinez is still the one. We look stronger, more consistent but a little shy in front of goal. N’Zogbia is a quality player but there were times last night when he played some awful balls, most notably towards the end of the match where he was running towards the box and had Moses coming in from the left, he should have played the ball as soon as, but he left it to the last minute to pass and all that Moses could do was to hit it on a fine angle and hit the keeper.

…again, looking forward to spuds. I think it will be a similar game as the notlob game and spuds will not like playing on that pitch so if we get a draw, it would be a good result and with 4 wins from our remaining games, we will be fine.

#23005

You can’t blame the pitch Jimmy. I’ve already had it pointed out to me that the pitch is just an excuse, and Martinez is the real reason why there were so many instances of poor control last night.

It was a bit tongue-in-cheek, to be honest, borne out of frustration based on the decision making you mention above.

Trouble is, given that we rely on him so much, we really need him to be delivering. Unfair, I know, but that’s the way it is.

#23010

Fair enough – its just a sad state of affairs that we only have one player we can look to who seems to have any sort of ability to create something from nothing

so clever one please tell me where in your masterpiece of detective work does it say that i sanction or condone that type of play,i am merely pointing out if you care to read it, that when bruce’s team knocked it up front it didnt go straight into touch unlike it does when the defence keep knock 50 yard diagonal balls foward, and everything martinez is not as rosy as supporters make out, just the same as the other claim that everything bruce’s side did was gash.

it would have been very difficult for any team to play flowing football on that pitch last night but we never once tried and giving the ball away every time we went foward without bolton having to make a tackle(as we did second half against stoke and everton) cannot in any way be blamed on the state of the pitch,.
i have been saying all season(and that is the gist of the thread you chose to bring up)we dont play a tenth of the football that the blinkered ones on here claim we do,and that my dear standish is my gripe with both you believers on here and the spanish one himself.

The “pitch” can only be used as any sort of excuse for the last 3 games.
BUT the fact of the matter is that seeig as how we’ve only won 3 games at home all season its fair to say we were playing $h!t when the surface was like a bowling green so I can fully understand comments made that the pitch is just an excuse
Especially when you consider latics have only won 1 of the last 11 league games, played on all sorts of qualities of surfaces
At the end of the day, Martinez chooses the signings, the starting XI, the formation, the tactics & the substitutions. he has to take the majority of the blame for what has been for the most part some dire performances this season & to start blaming the pitch (and even the weather last night) now when we’ve played poorly most of the season is to be frank a poor excuse

A tenth? Are you sure? I suppose you are, and we should all bow to your superior knowledge because you are the only one who knows anything about football, all gleaned from one sunny August afternoon in a game of “after you, claude” against St Mirren, apparently.

And in any case, a tenth of f*** all quality football is still f*** all so really, we are no better or worse off, are we?

Actually, all of the above posts are valid, I think.

Some differing opinions, but still, all very valid.
However, I will not condemn Martinez, nor praise him at this time. Once again, I think his problem, again, is that he comes out and says too much, if anything. He needs to learn to make one or two points and then shut up, rather than ramble on, smiling. The only thing I will say is, ok, so say he went tomorrow. Who would we be able to get in to ‘steady the ship’? The only person I’d fancy, seriously, would be Jewell. But looking at the games we have got left, and they are quickly running out, it might be a task too far for anybody. Mind you, my gut instinct is that both us and Bolton will survive.

The game last night was very poor. Two very poor teams, slogging it out on an absolutely disgusting pitch. It’s only mid February, and that playing surface is atrocious. It is beyond repair, I think, and how worse it will get, god only knows. I saw a clip on SSN of them replacing divots, and basically the divot was about 15 inches by 10 inches, and it looked as if it was basically a clump of sandy soil, with a clump of dead grass on top. If that is how the ‘Desso Fibre’ pitch system is, then I think it’s about time the whole thing was properly dug up (at the soonest opportunity) and replaced with the stuff that United have at Old Trafford, which comes from a turf farm near Leeds, I think.
I saw our players basically tackling themselves, with the bumps and divots. I recall McCarthy losing the ball, and twisting on a divot, then looking down at it, as if to say “What the f*ck?” It’s moving as they are running on it, for Christ’s sake.

I’m not making any excuses, but things are hard enough, without that god awful pitch. I wonder how long it will be before the Premier League start having a word? I can see Benitez and Wenger going mad about it, to be honest. No wonder we started to play long balls late on, as you struggle to play a passing game on that. Dear god! We’ll be alright if they start talking about point deductions, eh?

question and slate what i think if you like griff ,but it doesnt mask the fact that the football played this season is as i said boring and poor.
the tenth remark is ,as you well know , not the amount i think we have played, but the fraction what we have actually played compared to what those that support the martinez party line claim we have played.

i seem to remember you making a bold statement some time ago that you would wait until after the transfer window had closed and look at how we performed then before you would start to worry about the outlook of our team – whereas i started to worry, as you said during that pre season friendly,so tell me now your outlook on our prospects given the fact that for some reason we now look a far worse team than before the transfer window.
