20 April 2014 at 10:33 am #1300573 Premier League hat-tricks.
Henri Camara
Marcus Bent
???????????If scoring a hat-trick is not proof enough that a player is worthy of the division, then what is?
Wasn’t Gomez, was it ?! B)
Now I’m not saying that scoring 3 makes one a EPL player, but as you make the point not too many Latics players have done it in the EPL (IRRESPCTIVE as to the opposition).
People talk too freely about leaders (Caldwell ?!!) and role models. Without any regard to the debate about the pros /cons of Mr Gomez, if only for the way he goes about his job, to have taken some much sh1t from the Latics ranks over time and yet tough it out, maintain his self-respect and progress to become an increasingly prominent, and high-impact (goal tally, football ‘brain) member of the playing squad, is great testimony to him … he is a role model !
For someone ‘so slow’, ‘always caught in possession’, a style of play arguably not conducive to UR’s high tempo, energy emphasis …. he’s obviously doing something right ! Pity a few idiots on here just don’t see it.
What was it UR said the other week when interviewed after Bolton game ..missed pen
‘I wish I had 11 JGs ….’Doesn’t go hiding, always looks to get on the ball, willing to take responsibility much of same will be required of the team in the nerve-jangling Play-Offs …
20 April 2014 at 1:21 pm #130062An excellent performance all round today. The defense were rarely tested, but strong when necessary, the midfield completely ran the show and we looked like scoring every time we went forward.
Probably one of, if not, the best performance of the season.Agreed. A brilliant performance.
Roger just about shaded MOTM for me. He deserved it for the effort he put in.
MacArthur put as much effort in and played better, IMO.
20 April 2014 at 3:03 pm #130072McArthur always seemed to play in McCarthy’s shadow.
He was largely overlooked by Coyle but has emerged as a much better, more versatile and more responsible player under Rosler.
That speaks volumes for all three.
20 April 2014 at 3:32 pm #130073McArthur always seemed to play in McCarthy’s shadow..Of the 2 I always preferred McArthur
Although clearly a good player I never understood why McCarthy was as highly rated as he was. During his time here I rarely came away from a game thinking he’d stood out above others during the match but often thought/think it about McArthur.
Maybe McCarthy is one of those players who goes about his business quietly & effectively or maybe it’s just further proof that I know feck all about football!!20 April 2014 at 3:53 pm #130074Am I missing something?
Espinoza is brilliant at the running around and tackling bit, but at times his passing is shocking.
It was exactly the same yesterday. He had a decent game but was behind McArthur, Gomez, and Perch for me.
It’s the energy “running around” and closing down that makes the difference – the final piece of the jigsaw. When you consider all the loanees who’ve played and contributed very little, Rog was a breath of fresh air yesterday and the performance of the whole siide was lifted.
Leave the fancy passing to Mr Gomez who was also excellent yesterday as was young James.
Best league performance of the season for me. :)
Yes, leave the fancy passing to Gomez, but passing to one of your own players should be a prerequisite for any player. He ran like f’ck yesterday, but what’s the point of running and tackling when 50% of the time you give it back to the opposition. Reading were poor, so he got away with it.
Realistically, if McCann or Watson were fit, Espinoza wouldn’t start. He deosn’t retain possession well enough for either Martinez or Rosler’s liking.
But some just fail to grasp the concept :silly:
And that would be Wigan fans in particular.
Maybe it is a rugby town after all….!20 April 2014 at 4:01 pm #130075As I have posted before you would see the real Jordi in a better side with better players. In the Prem we always struggled and some of our guys may have been found wanting at that level. I don’t think it is comparable to say Jordi wasn’t good enough last season but is in the championship.Football success is very much dependant on confidence and this season we have that in abundance not only because we are in a lower division but also we have brought in a few new ideas with Uwe. Jordi may seem to make more mistakes than others but that’s because he is in the game a whole lot more than some. If you are never off the ball you are gonna fluff it occasionally and nobody can ever accuse the lad of going missing for large parts of a game.I think Jordi has real guts and I will be gutted if he goes.Whenever we have a real good performance he is usually right in the thick of it.
20 April 2014 at 4:51 pm #130078Think Uwe has finally found his strongest 11 – and no surprise that 8/11 are from last season’s squad.
Gomez is too good for the Chsmpionship but probably not fast enough in his role for the Prem. Can see him winning titles in Holland or France though.
Don’t really care where we finish, but would prefer 5th as I reckon playing at home first is a better option for us and Derby over 2 legs will be tough.
20 April 2014 at 5:23 pm #130079Think Uwe has finally found his strongest 11 – and no surprise that 8/11 are from last season’s squad.I’m not sure that Uwe is even looking for his strongest eleven. Circumstances change, and he wants to put out a team that can challenge in every game.
However, the team that beat Manchester City at the Etihad didn’t rely on last season’s squad;
Carson
Boyce Ramis McCann
Perch McArthur McEachran Gómez Crainey
McManaman FortunéAnd a very similar team – with Beausejour replacing the injured McCann – drew against Arsenal at Wembley;
Carson
Perch Boyce Ramis Crainey
McArthur McEachran Gómez Beausejour
McManaman FortunéPerhaps Rosler thinks that is one of his stronger teams.
Looking for it or not, based on today’s dire result and performance methinks he now does know his strongest team!
22 April 2014 at 2:06 am #130125He will also know that Reading aren’t the strongest opponents.
22 April 2014 at 3:19 am #130128Today,It was us who was the Boys. The Men are now in the Prem. ;)
22 April 2014 at 4:01 am #130129They [Burnley] won’t last more than one season in the Prem. That hoof football is bleedin awful to watch. The first goal they scored was top draw, both in build up and finish, the other 89 minutes was the worst game, in football terms, that I’ve seen all season.
Why all the over physical stuff [he should have gone for that elbow on Boycie and several others should have been carded].
The referee took the easy option every time their crowd claimed a free kick, it was embarrassing at times.I have seen Burnley live twice this season and both times they have failed to impress me, its not sour grapes its just how I see it.
Well done for getting promoted, its great to see a fellow NW team reach the promise land, but I’m afraid at least 7 or 8 of that team are not premiership class.
I don’t think we were the boys today, we were just trying to play football when the other team wern’t.
From Matlock to ManU
What a journey!22 April 2014 at 4:25 am #130130I thought we did well to get beat only 2nil.1st half we wer dire.19 points clear of us. shows there doing somthing right.
22 April 2014 at 3:05 pm #130155When you’ve got two good strikers, you can just lump it into the penalty box.
Just imagine what Wigan would look like with a proper striker!
