It was probably the first time in my 37 years of watching latics that i never knew any of the starting 11 bar barnett & mccann. I too had a knob sat behind me who shouted “absolute sh1t” in front of his 5 year old son at the end of the game. IMO it is a brand new team with a brand new manager that needs to be given time to gel. My only concern was the passing back to the keeper which almost nearly ended in a goal to them. Clearly caldwell has obviously learned this from martinez. I agree also with the comment made about the loanees. If these guys were here for the seasin then fine, play them. But, if they are only here for a month then dont play them & give OUR lads the chance to play & gel with the 1st teamers.
Overall i would give us a 6 out of 10. Plenty of reasons to think we will be fine, but still a lot of work needed to be done.

Completely understand why they play from the back. If the keeper hoofs it out every time he gets it, chances are, around 50% of the time you’ll just be handing it stright to the opposition.

But, if you’re playing it out from the back, the last person you want to give it to is Barnett.[/quote]

It’s OK understanding the concept of the play but for heavens sake put a lot more practice into it, otherwise it may be better to ‘hoof’ and hope for a 50/50 ball. At least it’s half way down the pitch allowing the team to regroup…make a mistake between the goalie and defender and it can be (as we almost saw the other day) catastrophic.

Caldwell was guilty of it himself in his playing days (hence the nickname) but he needs to impress upon his defenders to keep their heads up, look around and plan the pass before they receive the ball from the goalie and not receive the ball with their backs to play.

That might be so, however, if you take Donny’s point then there is a real risk of a player merry-go-round here at the club. If the players do not suit Caldwell’s style, or came here ‘over-rated’ etc then indeed there is (can be) a problem. You have to admit, though, that it is rather late in the window to be experimenting with other teams players. Is Caldwell behind the drag-curve? Only time will tell.

Both the 2 Everton lads were brought in during pre-season – only Coulthirst has been brought in on loan since the season started.
I understand what you’re saying about if they’re “over-rated” then it can lead to a player merry go round but I think the very fact that Caldwell is starting them in games indicates that he rates them & that its likely that Latics will extend the loan deals.
If they’re brought in on another club’s recommendation & Caldwell doesn’t rate them then I’d hazard a guess that he wouldn’t pick them for games & then send em back having watched them in training. Coulthirst did train with the squad late last week & done enough to impress Caldwell to include him in his matchday squad.

At least that’s what I hope happens – maybe Rosler & MacKay’s style of bringing in a player on loan, chucking em straight into the starting line up, before dropping them, never playing them again & then sending them back has put everybody off loan players here!!

Cheers for that. I suppose that we (well me at least) are still tainted with the style Rosler and MacKay adopted with the role of the loanee. However, it still makes me uneasy to think he is still ‘tinkering’ when we should be smashing the league on our way to 100 points – oh hang on a sec.

I refer to honourable gentleman to the comment:

‘But, if you’re playing it out from the back, the last person you want to give it to is Barnett’

Barnett isn’t up to it. Even when he is under pressure, some of his passing is woeful. I don’t think it’s a matter of him not keeping his head up unfortunately.

He got less of the ball in the second half so I’m hoping someone on the coaching staff spoke about it during the half time break.

Is there any reason why Daniels wouldn’t play over Barnett?

Surely he can’t be as bad.

I’d play Paul Daniels ahead of Barnett.

Did everyone really expect that a team full of strangers would hit the ground running?

I’ll be happy with a mid table finish with a strong end to the season in preparation for next seasons push. Abit like Paul Jewells start.

I do agree with the Barnett comments. I expect both Barnett and McCann to leave before the transfer window closes.

If you’re implying that there’s a time and a place for the keeper to lump it, then I’m in agreement.

And it should be a case of rolling or throwing it to a defender whenever it’s safe to do so.

But I suspect our man O’Donnell either isn’t used to doing that yet, or does not have the capacity to make that judgement himself.

It was strange watching the game yesterday, felt like i could have picked a random game to go and watch. looked ok in patches, need to get more men forward when attacking down the wings and cut out the stupid passing mistakes and the suicide at the back. Hopfully the more games we play the more the lads will get an understanding and the more we will gell. Need three points on wednesday, dont want to be playing catch up all season. Ill also settle for a top half finish with a big push next season, keeping the squad together and adding a bit more quality. It’s a new begining for the club, just have to stick with it, get behind them a bit more, atmosphere a bit flat yesterday, seems our fans need to be in front before starting to make a noise. Keep the faith, see how it goes.

My take on Sundays game…… I should point out Im only 50, so I still have a positive outlook on life unlike so many of the bitter sods that spread their poison around the ground and on the internet forums.

I think it could have been the best game of football at home we’ve seen for more than 12 months. Sure the defence was suspect at times, especially when we played ourselves into trouble. Having said that it is very hard for a centre half to cope with an on rushing forward when the ball to him is short or misdirected. If you look back on all the tic-tac that got us into problems, the pass to the defender was careless if not shocking. Barnett is not a ball playing centre half, but he brings other things to the team, it is up to us to not leave hime exposed.

On the whole we kept the ball well, we moved it around well, we were very creative at times. With a better choice of final ball we had the capability to win that game quite easily. I do know we rode our luck at times, but so did Doncaster. Grigg ran his blood to water, he will score us goals, if we have the composure to play the right ball. Composure and understanding will come with time playing together, this is a NEW team.

Bring on Wednesday evening, this team is well drilled, and i believe well coached, it just needs a little time to settle.

I await the abuse from the darkside. Enjoy your football, I know I do !!

I think I missed a lot on Saturday. I really enjoyed myself, added to that I thought we played almost a million times better than we did against Coventry.

There was some great interplay and some smashing passing, one sequence in the first half in the north – west corner nearly lead to a great goal.

Perkins is a mid field dynamo, and chased everything. Reece, who looks like Jordi, was playing the left wide side wonderfully with some Jordi-esque defense splitting passes. Fransico looks good as did Shak-attack. Donovan the goalie was M O M with some stunning saves especially in the first half.

Added to that, in typical Wigan style, there was plenty of edge of the seat entertaining nail biting stuff.

              It will come good

Which game were you at, we were far from rubbish, but ‘plenty of nail biting edge of the seat stuff is stretching it just a bit’.

It’s early days so I am reserving judgement, there are good signs, but there are also many things that need improving on. I hope GC is concentrating on the negatives as correcting these will increase the positives.

                C’mon Wigan.[/b]

I agree Donovan saved the point on 3 or 4 occasions. The MOM for me was our left back Reece James. I think he was nothing short of awesome. I cannot believe that we’ve managed to sign him.
