What gripes me the most about our situation is, right now we should have a top class academy in place bringing young local talented players through to drive us forward and to sell on. Were surrounded with Premiership clubs 4 within 20 odd miles and we don’t seem to be able to pick one or 2 like we’ve done in the past.

I’m sure if we would have had top training facilities from say 5-6-7 years back we could have attracted a good few young lads from nearby clubs. All those years in the Premiership were wasted not setting it up, or did they think we’d be there forever ??.

Now and especially now when it’s needed we still don’t bring any lads coming through and if any do show signs we thrown them out on loan. Not only that, we waited till we left the Premiership before we upgraded the first teams training facilities which beggars belief.

I feel all the Premiership money was squandered on staying in the Premiership when some if only a little each season should have been taken out and invested into a top youth setup we might have stood a chance of beating the drop.

When bought Palacios for peanuts and sold him for 12 million after 37 games/1 season. As it were a Brucie bonus something for nothing, wouldn’t that money have been better spent on setting up an academy rather than thrown back in the prem pish pot ?

The Charnock Richard Gold Club fiasco still leaves a bad taste for me! What happened to the money from that? I called it out as a load of bollocks back then and got berated on here for saying it but I knew I was right. It will have houses built on it one day with not a penny from it coming back into the club! The club had a great chance to move forward and instead decided to downsize and we do look like we are on our way back to whence we came I fear! The 1500 or so ‘Goole away’ crew are looking forward to it!

The land is still there being grazed by sheep but the Sky money isn’t to develop it.

Unfortunately Academies are very expensive things to run and maintain.

The fact we are so close to Premier League Clubs is the problem, as we only get 6th or 7th dibs on young players.

Saying that, some do slip through the net, but we have to be alert to them and nurture them. I think it s a focus, but it is a while before we will see rewards.

After 8 years in the premier league it’s amazing that nobody had the nouse to invest some of the money spent on wages on the academy. That would have shown a level of ambition as a club and would have been a legacy of the time we spent up there. As CW says the fact United, City, Liverpool and Everton are on our doorstep must mean we had a good chance in being an attractive proposition as 5th choice and as we did with Callum Mac and Bainesy we could nurture the lads who got released. Would be nice to see a couple of lads a year getting a chance in the first team. Flores showed enough last season to be given game time this year. What’s the point in keep sending lads out on loan when our first team is shite?

I think it is the problem with 80% of the Premier League, most of the money GOES on wages, at a level that NO business in the real world would survive.

Even with this new deal, it is the players and the agents that will prosper as the idiot top 6 outdo each other for the highest wage bill, without giving a second thought to the knock effects to the rest of the teams in that League. And giving no thought at all about the impact through the EFL and Grass Roots.

So how many houses will they be able to fit on the old golf course? Who bought the land? The club or was it Whelan’s own money? If it’s the club’s money then surely there will be some massive return one day right? Can football clubs do such business? So many questions! I did suspect that it was never going to be an academy though !

Yes it was but LCC put too many barriers in place. I am guessing the land was bought by Mr Whelan, not the club. So when he sells it on it will recoup his money.

BTW, where the hell do you think the money came from to buy the Bolton’s old training ground? Even more investment that he will NEVER see again.

Doesn’t seem to have Mr Whelan’s name on this very official looking document, in fact it says ‘Wigan Athletic Football Club’ You’ll no doubt worm your way out of it saying WAFC is Dave Whelan but in the eyes of the taxman I think you will find that the 2 are not the same!

It’s probably still owned by the club. But seeing at the guide-price at auction was only £650k, and the local residents were up in arms about anyone building there, I doubt it will be a huge windfall when the club do sell it on.

In the end it was simply cheaper to buy a ready-made one off Bolton during their closing down sale.

There’s a shortage of good building land for properties so those few residents who would prefer a peaceful life wont stand a chance.
That land will only go up in value and if it was bought under the club then it’s the property of the club.
But back to my point, it wouldn’t have cost the earth to build up an Academy in comparison what we wasted over the years.

Euxton cost the club 2.2 million and considering the money we’ve wasted on certain players (I haven’t got all day to list them) I cannot figure out why some wasn’t set aside and an Academy made are number 1 priority.

An as for “wages” took the money ?,before we took the drop we had the lowest wage bill of all the established teams in the Prem. We had FA Cup money , and Europa money the year after but we felt it wasnt the right thing to do and by that time it was way toooo late in the day as the money was used to try and get back in the Prem.

I’m in no doubt that, that very bad decision not to go ahead with it will come back to bite us on the harse while young talent in and around the North go elsewhere simply because of whats on offer and that’s no disrespect to the lads running the show now.

I don’t know who bought the Charnock Richard site but “the club” didn’t buy the Euxton one off Bolton – Huron Properties did

Also, just coz it says Wigan Athletic on the planning permission it doesn’t mean that Wigan Athletic own the land at Charnock Richard. ‘ve put in planning applications where I used to work & it was always in the school’s name even though the land & buildings were owned by a charity who allowed the school use of the buildings for a peppercorn rent
