A state of the art academy does not guarantee you the next Messi or Ronaldo. Chelsea reportedly have 40 odd players out on loan so their academy is working well for other clubs. How many of the top clubs have homegrown players in abundance in their first teams?. Pressure dictates that success means spending big and paying massive wages not nurturing your own.

Please don’t try and draw a comparison with Messi Ronaldo and Chelsea. The bigger clubs have the financial strength to never need to use youth players.
There is no argument here, we would stand a far better chance with a good youth system rather than loan after loan and free i.e end of career players with no conecction to the club.

It worked for Southampton years ago who once were on the brink of disappearing for good
Cup winners mon my point is that the club could spend millions on an academy and still not produce any quality players. Im sick of hearing my club being slagged off by our own fans and this illusion that Mr Whelan should pump millions in for players managers academy etc when it just isn’t the way to run a club. The big clubs who engulf us will always get the cream of any local talent this town produces. Of course we would all love to see Wigan born lads coming through the academy into the first team but like I said pressure dictates a quick fix by signing players instead. Lets say this season when a lot of players left we started with the likes of Flores, Chow and Cosgrove in the first team and been in exactly the same position we are now. This board would be in meltdown by some and all the old “tight Wad”, “war chest” and “fleecing the club” remarks be in every topic. I’m sure the board are doing their upmost to get the balance right and build an academy whilst living within the clubs financial means. The game has changed so much not all for the better and to me the biggest casualty is the once never ending conveyor belt of talented British players breaking through has stalled somewhat.

A club like Wigan Athletic needs quality coaches more than some magnificent facility stuck out in the country.

Burnley investing 11 million in purpose built facilities whilst they have their time in the Prem. Meanwhile we fudged along at Christopher park talking about it then managed to get a knockdown price on Boltons old one.

The difference is, when Burnley got to the Premier League they had a forward thinking manager, CEO and Chairman, and when we first got there, we didn’t.

Jewell put no emphasis on developing youth, and Bruce pretty much stifled it in in order to direct all the funds in the first team.

As I said earlier, it was only when Martinez came in and when JJ replaced Brenda Spence that the plan to build an academy was hatched.
Burnley FC probably own Turf Moor and their Academy after two previous journeys into Premier League football and have a sound financial footing. We had eight years in that league, cup runs and huge player sale revenue and four years of parachute payments and have very little in assets and are flying towards league one at a rate of knots.
That was my point.

Prior to Martinez and JJ coming into the club, there was no planning for youth development – and all available funds were thrown at the first team to try and keep us up.

Simply, Burnley planned better than us.

The club is run as a much tighter ship these days, but in the earlier days of our time in the Premier League, no so.

Burnley also have ‘development centres’ around the North West. I know, because I was talking to a scout from Burnley at a kids football match a few months ago. They have one at the JMO football centre in Skem.

I think Latics could broaden their horizons within 30 miles of Wigan.
